There are just two rounds of Premier League fixtures to come before the World Cup break and Liverpool will be hoping to end on a high. It’s been a tough season for Liverpool so far with just four wins from their opening 12 Premier League matches, drawing four and losing four. They are already eight points behind fourth-placed Newcastle and closer to the bottom than they are the top.

Jurgen Klopp’s side may have ended the Champions League on a winning note, beating Ajax and Napoli in their final two matches, but they have been joined by back-to-back Premier League defeats. First the Reds were beaten by the Premier League’s other Reds, Nottingham Forest at the City Ground and then last time out they lost 2-1 to Leeds United at Anfield, their first home defeat in the league since the 2020/21 season.

Tottenham also suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League in recent weeks, first losing to Manchester United and then Newcastle United, losing ground on the top two while also being part of a run of three defeats in six matches. Last week there was also the potentially demoralising draw against Sporting CP in which they had an injury-time winner ruled out for offside, temporarily postponing their qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League.

But in the past two matches Tottenham have shown their resolve. First they recovered from 2-0 down against Bournemouth to win 3-2, ending their losing streak in the Premier League thanks to an injury-time goal from Rodrigo Bentacur. Then on Tuesday they came from a goal down again, this time vs Marseille, to secure their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League with the 2-1 win sealed by an injury-time goal from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Tottenham vs Liverpool match stats

Hugo Lloris was Tottenham’s hero in the first half against Marseille, making three saves to keep them in the match before their eventual comeback. It’s been the same case at times in the Premier League this season, with the Frenchman averaging three saves per 90 minutes. At the same time, Liverpool have had more shots than any other side in the Premier League this season at 212.

Tottenham may have won more points from losing positions than any other club in the Premier League this season, but Liverpool go behind more than most. Coming into this weekend’s matches, only Southampton and West Ham (nine each) have conceded the first goal of a match on more occasions than Liverpool’s eight.
