Premier League 2023/24 key dates

The 2023/24 Premier League season is underway as Manchester City look to secure a record fourth consecutive title – but the Citizens will face pressure from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side created history last time out after becoming only the second English team to complete the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble, and the Spaniard pressed on with City winning their opening six games of this term.

However, after shock defeats to Wolves and Arsenal, City’s run at the title won’t be as simple this term, despite picking up seven points from the last nine including a thrilling 4-4 draw with Chelsea last time out.

Arsenal were City’s closest rival in the race for the title last season and they look set to push them all the way once again. Declan Rice was a big summer recruit and the hope is the England international can help the Gunners bridge the gap to the champions and with 27 points from their opening 12 matches, they have made an impressive start.

The Gunners’ North London rivals Tottenham also look set to be in or around it this term with Ange Postecoglou becoming the first manager in Premier League history to take 23 points from his opening nine matches in charge. Big Ange has done an incredible job in such a short space of time, completely changing Spurs footballing philosophy, but with an ever growing injury list and back-to-back defeats against Chelsea and Wolves, they may find it tough to keep their place in the top four.

Liverpool were not at their best last season and failed to even secure a Champions League finish. After adding Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to their team, the Reds made a positive start to the campaign, winning six and drawing two of their opening nine matches, with their only defeat coming in controversial fashion to Tottenham, finishing the match with nine men.

Since then, they have returned to their unbeaten ways with three wins and two draws from their last five matches and could go top of the table with a victory over rivals Man City this weekend.

Manchester United are still in a period of transition under Erik Ten Hag, but made strides forward last season to finish in third place. They’ve brought in Mason Mount from Chelsea and Andre Onana to replace long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea, but they still look far off from being challengers having picked up 21 points from their opening 12 matches and losing back-to-back home games for the first time since November 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After crashing the top-four race ahead of schedule last year, Newcastle United will be hoping for another strong season that ends with European football. Things didn’t go to plan early on with defeats to City, Liverpool and Brighton, but have turned things round, winning five of their last seven (D1), including their best ever away result in the competition with an 8-0 victory against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

However, they did fall to defeat to Eddie Howe’s former side Bournemouth last time out.

Last season’s Premier League title race was a thrilling one for quite some time before Arsenal finally succumbed to Manchester City’s relentless form.

In the end, five points separated the two sides at the top of the table as the Gunners could not maintain the consistency required to fend off the Citizens, despite leading the way for the majority of the campaign.

Many are expecting that to be the title battle again this season with Mikel Arteta making some eye-catching additions to his squad during this summer, and both are battling it out at the top of the table after 12 matches.

But the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle United will hope to mount challenges of their own – particularly the Reds, who have previously been City’s closest competitors under the guidance of the effervescent Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham were among the teams to miss out on the top four last season as Newcastle surprised many to secure fourth position and return to the Champions League group stages for the first time since the 2002/03 season.

Chelsea were way off the pace last time as Graham Potter struggled to find the right balance within the club’s overblown squad. They’ll expect to improve emphatically this season under former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who had a fine record of finishing in the European qualification spots in his previous Premier League job, but it has been a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge. The Blues currently sit in 10th on 16 points, but will be buoyed having come back several times to earn a 4-4 draw against champions Man City.

Spurs themselves will be hoping to return to Europe’s elite competition too as they begin a new Harry Kane-less era under former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou. The Australian has already added some interesting signings to his squad and started well with 23 points from his first nine matches in charge (a new record), but back-to-back defeats has brought Spurs fans back down to earth, especially with new signings James Maddison and Micky Van de Ven being ruled out until the new year.

Last season’s relegation battle was arguably the most exciting aspect of the entire campaign.

Going into the final day, three teams were still fighting for safety knowing that only one can be in the Premier League next season – but Leicester City and Leeds United couldn’t do enough to secure safety and were relegated alongside Southampton.

Everton were the club to earn a lucky escape on the final day thanks to a 1-0 home win over Bournemouth, but it looks set to be another difficult year at Goodison Park with Sean Dyche’s side plunged back into the bottom three after receiving a 10-point deduction from the FA that leaves them on four points, despite winning three of their last five matches.

The newly promoted trio of Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley have all struggled to adapt to the Premier League, with the three promoted sides currently occupying three of the bottom four spots in the table.

Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest also finished in the lower reaches of the Premier League last term, and may get dragged back into the mix.

What betting markets are popular for the Premier League?

Operating as one of the most popular bets in football, if there’s a wager you’re looking to use your Premier League betting tips on, then full-time results and correct scores fit the bill.

With each game, the odds will differ, based on form and quality. For instance, if Newcastle, the team with the best defence last season, were to face off with Wolves, who had the worst attack, you can expect the Magpies to hold firm.

More popular in recent years have been both teams to score bets. Even if your team loses, you’ll still emerge with cash in hand should they, alongside the victors, make it onto the score-sheet.

This also counts for extra-time and any penalty permutations. The Premier League was a strong league for BTTS bets in the 2022/2023 season, with relegated Leeds United leading the way in games that saw both teams find the net. 68% of the Whites’ games saw BTTS come in.

Obviously with this being Squawka, we love a stats bet too! These have become more and more prevalent in the last handful of seasons with corners, cards, shots, passes, tackles, offsides and more all available markets on certain Premier League fixtures.
