Euro 2024 is done and we’re now a month away from the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Teams have already returned for pre-season and friendlies are coming, with there truly being no rest. And teams will all be aiming to depose Manchester City.
For a record-breaking fourth consecutive campaign, Man City are the defending champions. Before Pep Guardiola’s current side, no team had won the English men’s top-flight title four seasons in a row — that’s a record that goes all the way back to the beginning, not just the Premier League.
The question now is, can they win five in a row? Or will one of the challengers finally steal the crown, ending Man City’s domination?

As they always are before any Premier League season, Man City are the early favourites to win the crown. However, it’s much closer than it has been in the past.
The Citizens may have won the title again last season, but they showed real signs of weakness. For the second season in a row, Man City failed to win 10 of their 38 Premier League matches, with seven draws alongside three defeats. They were beaten by Wolves and Arsenal in back-to-back matches before also losing to Aston Villa — three matches Rodri missed due to suspension. But after that Aston Villa defeat at the start of December, Man City won 19 and drew four of their final 23 matches including a nine-game winning streak to end the campaign. It was a run that saw Man City overtake Arsenal at the death, winning the league by two points.
And Arsenal are backed to push them very close once again. Arsenal have been Man City’s closest title challengers in each of the past two seasons, proving their first run was not a fluke. Last season they really looked like they were going to take the crown, leading the race until the final weeks of the season — though Man City did have matches in hand. The Gunners were fantastic in 2023/24, finishing as second-top scorers and had the best defence, conceding just 29 goals. In fact, Arsenal matched Man City’s win-draw-loss record that had been enough to see them beat the Gunners to the title in 2022/23.
Liverpool were the third team in the title race last season, though they fell away just before the end of the campaign. One too many draws put an end to their title hopes with 10 in total, the second-most in the Premier League behind only Brighton. In the end, Liverpool finished nine points behind Man City and seven off Arsenal, though they were a comfortable 14 above fourth-placed Aston Villa. There is a lot of promise in Liverpool’s team, however, and it will be interesting to see how they fare in Arne Slot’s first campaign as manager.

Aston Villa completed the top four last season, finishing two points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. But there appears to be some caution in backing them to repeat the feat in 2024/25. Last season fans saw Newcastle struggle to juggle the Premier League and Champions League, finishing seventh — and failing to qualify for European football — while bowing out at the group stage. But Unai Emery is building a solid unit at Villa Park and has already been busy in the transfer market to try to deal with the added matches that come with the Champions League.
Newcastle have shorter odds than Aston Villa now, owing to the fact that they don’t have the European responsibilities. Tottenham and Manchester United have the same odds as Newcastle, and fans will be hoping to see more from both sides. Tottenham had a decent first season under Ange Postecoglou and led the table at an early stage, before a terrible run pre-Christmas saw them drop. It will now be about finding consistency across the campaign for Tottenham.
At Man Utd, Erik ten Hag remains in charge despite reports that he was set to be sacked at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. Winning the FA Cup reportedly wouldn’t be enough to save him, but it looks like it was, with the Dutchman trusted to lead Man Utd to the new campaign. Winning the FA Cup also saw Man Utd secure Europa League football, having finished a lowly eighth in the Premier League in what was their worst season in the competition.
But, outside the three title challengers, Chelsea are the slight favourites to finish in the top four. The Blues had built form towards the end of last season under Mauricio Pochettino which secured them a spot in the Europa Conference League. After a tough campaign trying to mould a very young squad, things were coming up. However, Pochettino left the role at the end of the season and Enzo Maresca is now the man in charge. The man who got Leicester City back into the Premier League, Maresca has a huge task on his hands, but there is a lot of optimism.

Last season, Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United were the teams relegated from the Premier League, just the second time that all three promoted teams when straight back down. At the start of the season, the newly-promoted sides always dominate the favourites to be relegated, and that’s the case once again.
This season, Leicester are the favourites to go down, one of two teams currently odds-on. The Foxes are former Premier League champions and lifted the Championship title last season, though there was some signs of worry with 11 defeats. But the biggest thing counting against Leicester this season will be the loss of Maresca to Chelsea. Steve Cooper has been drafted in to replace him, and he doesn’t have the best record in the Premier League, narrowly avoiding relegation with Nottingham Forest before getting sacked in the second campaign.
Ipswich’s promotion was the exciting story of the 2023/24 Championship campaign for the neutral, sealed on the final day as they nicked the second automatic promotion spot ahead of Leeds. Kieran McKenna had done a fantastic job in securing back-to-back promotions from League One having seen his appointment met by a lot of criticism from Manchester United fans — with McKenna previously working in their academy. McKenna’s work had seen him linked with the then-vacant Chelsea and Brighton jobs, with reports that he was set to leave Ipswich. The Tractor Boys managed to hold onto their man, but they are still odds-on to go straight back down.
Of the three newly-promoted sides, Southampton have been given the best chance to stay up, though they are still third favourites. Saints — who, like Leicester sealed an immediate return — secured their promotion through the play-offs, beating Leeds in the final. It was reward for the faith put in Russell Martin, who led Saints on a club-record 25-game unbeaten run.
Nottingham Forest and Everton also have pretty low odds having struggled in each of the past two campaigns. However, Everton will be hoping to do better this year, ending last season comfortably despite their points deductions. Wolves, Brentford and Fulham also have relatively shorter odds.

What betting markets are popular for the Premier League?
Operating as one of the most popular bets in football, if there’s a wager you’re looking to use your Premier League betting tips on, then full-time results and correct scores fit the bill.
With each game, the odds will differ, based on form and quality. For instance, if Arsenal, the team with the best defence last season, were to face off with Everton, who had the worst attack of those still in the division, you’d expect the Gunners to come out on top.
More popular in recent years have been both teams to score bets. Even if your team loses, you’ll still emerge with cash in hand should they, alongside the victors, make it onto the score-sheet.
This also counts for extra-time and any penalty permutations. The Premier League was a strong league for BTTS bets in the 2023/2024 season, with relegated Luton leading the way in games that saw both teams find the net. A whopping 82% of the Hatters’ games saw BTTS come in, with Tottenham (71%) lead the way for teams still in the Premier League.
Obviously with this being Squawka, we love a stats bet too! These have become more and more prevalent in the last handful of seasons with corners, cards, shots, passes, tackles, offsides and more all available markets on certain Premier League fixtures.
