The 2022/23 Premier League campaign is moving towards its business end and Manchester City are still targeting a third-successive title, having pipped Liverpool to last season’s championship by a single point.
Pep Guardiola’s side are looking to become just the sixth side to win three consecutive titles in English top flight history, and only the second club after Manchester United (1999-2001 and 2007-09) to achieve the feat in the Premier League.

Last season’s Premier League title race was a thrilling one with Liverpool taking Man City all the way to the final day before finally succumbing. In the end, just one point separated the two sides at the top of the table, and Man City didn’t make it easy for themselves or their fans, going 2-0 down at home to Aston Villa before coming back to win 3-2.
Many expected that to be the title battle again this season but it’s Arsenal who find themselves top of the table with 12 games left to play. The Gunners have won 20 of their 26 matches in the Premier League so far this season, drawing three and losing three. A 3-1 defeat to Man City in February threatened to derail Arsenal’s title charge, coming as part of a three-match winless run, but the Gunners have bounced back.
Five wins in a row, including two dramatic come-from-behind victories over Aston Villa and Bournemouth, have truly shown Arsenal’s resolve and they sit eight points clear of Man City. Guardiola’s side have won two of their past three games since beating Arsenal, but could be left cursing a draw with Nottingham Forest which took the control back out of their hands.

Chelsea and Tottenham completed the top four last season, but the former are currently 11 points adrift of that final Champions League place — and sitting 10th — after a run of three wins from their past 17 matches. The Blues spent big in the summer and winter but are preparing for a season without Champions League football.
Tottenham are still in a decent position despite having a topsy-turvy season, losing the second-most games in the top half of the table (nine). Antonio Conte’s men are currently fourth, two points clear of fifth-placed Newcastle and six clear of Liverpool in seven — though both clubs have played a game less. Tottenham also missed the chance to move up to third, squandered a 3-1 lead against Southampton to draw 3-3, conceding an injury-time penalty.
For Newcastle, a top four finished looked almost a certainty at the start of the year but the Magpies have fallen slightly. They went winless in five Premier League matches across a spell between January and early March, drawing three and losing two, though those defeats came against Liverpool and Manchester City. They have since bounced back with wins over Wolves and Nottingham Forest to close the gap on Spurs.
At the start of February, Liverpool were ninth, just one point above Chelsea and appearing to be joining the Blues out of Europe. But Jurgen Klopp’s side have turned things around incredibly. Four wins from their past six games have lifted Liverpool up to sixth and many have them among the favourites to qualify for the top four. Their most recent victory was a statement one too, annihilating Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield, though they did coming crash back to earth with a defeat to Bournemouth last time out.
Although a humiliating defeat for Erik ten Hag’s men, one week after they won the EFL Cup, Man Utd are still third. However, the Red Devils are now just three points ahead of fifth-placed Newcastle having dropped further points to Southampton recently.
Also keep an eye out for Brighton, who have continued to flourish in the post-Potter era, as well as Fulham and Brentford.

If you thought the top four battle was filled with teams, wait until you see what’s going on at the bottom. Just four points separate basement club Southampton and Crystal Palace up in 12th and it appears that no team really wants to pull away, with some clubs even at crisis point, with The Eagles recently sacking Patrick Vieira after a winless run in 2023. That dismissal policy has worked somewhat for other clubs, though.
After calling time on Nathan Jones’ brief and unsuccessful spell in charge at St Mary’s, Southampton have won two of their past six games, including triumphs over Chelsea and Leicester, though they remain rooted to the foot of the table. Bournemouth and West Ham complete the relegation zone, just one point ahead of Southampton.
Leicester are next up after their draw with Brentford lifted themselves one point clear of West Ham and Bournemouth, while Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Everton are all tied on 26 — the latter pair picking up points this weekend (three in Leeds’ case).

What betting markets are popular for the Premier League?
Operating as one of the most popular bets in football, if there’s a wager you’re looking to use your Premier League betting tips on, then full-time results and correct scores fit the bill.
With each game, the odds will differ, based on form and quality. For instance, if Newcastle, the team with the best defence, were to face off with Wolves, who have the worst attack, you can expect the Magpies to hold firm.
More popular in recent years have been both teams to score bets. Even if your team loses, you’ll still emerge with cash in hand should they, alongside the victors, make it onto the score-sheet.
This also counts for extra-time and any penalty permutations. The Premier League was a strong league for BTTS bets in the 2021/2022 season, with Leicester City leading the way in games that saw both teams find the net. 68% of the Foxes’ games saw BTTS come in.
Obviously with this being Squawka, we love a stats bet too! These have become more and more prevalent in the last handful of seasons with corners, cards, shots, passes, tackles, offsides and more all available markets on certain Premier League fixtures.
