Manchester United and Tottenham will be hoping for better domestic campaigns, while Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland return to the top tier.

Given it was wrapped up so early, Liverpool are the early favourites to complete a successful defence of their Premier League crown and have been given odds of 15/8.

After replacing the legendary Jurgen Klopp, Slot hit the ground running in his maiden season in English football, delivering the Reds’ second title of the decade. Liverpool put a generally poor title defence in the 2020-21 season, so the Dutchman will be eager to avoid a repeat of that this time around.

Arsenal’s wait for their fourth Premier League triumph continued, with the Gunners recording their third successive second-place finish. Even that was under threat towards the end of the campaign, but a timely victory over Newcastle on the penultimate matchday ensured they held on. Mikel Arteta’s side are second-favourites to go all the way this term, and the Spaniard will be desperate to make that extra step.

One of the biggest surprises of last season was the plight of Man City, whose mid-term slump saw them fall well out of contention. The champions in each of the four previous campaigns, Pep Guardiola’s side had to settle for a third-place finish, only sealing it on the final day. Man City face a crucial transfer window, with pressure to replace the outgoing Kevin De Bruyne, as well as putting themselves back in with a shout of reclaiming their crown.

Newcastle are set to play Champions League football for the second time in three seasons, after a memorable campaign also saw them end their trophy drought with victory in the Carabao Cup. Eddie Howe’s side were in with a late chance of snatching second place, but back-to-back defeats meant they had to settle for fifth. On the 30th anniversary of Kevin Keegan’s Entertainers coming within whiskers of landing the Premier League crown, could the class of 2025-26 go one better?

Then, what about Chelsea? Despite their critics, the Blues enjoyed a successful 2024-25, finishing fourth and winning the Conference League. Back in the Champions League where they feel they belong, Enzo Maresca’s side will now look to push his side closer to challenging at the top of the table.

Newcastle were certainly grateful for the Premier League being granted an additional Champions League qualifying spot, as they just about clung on to fifth place.

Although it is likely to be just four teams guaranteed of Champions League qualification this time around, the Magpies are odds-on favourites to join Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City, who are regarded as certainties to be there by the bookmakers.

Chelsea are also fancied to be in contention, given the envious strength in depth their squad possesses, while Aston Villa will look to seal their return to Europe’s top table after agonisingly missing out on the final day. Unai Emery’s side saw their hopes dashed by a controversial defeat to Man Utd at Old Trafford, and the Spaniard and his squad will be desperate to make amends for that.

Man Utd and Tottenham are also expected to be in contention for the top four, after enduring dismal domestic campaigns last time around, finishing 15th and 17th respectively. Had it not been for the gap to the bottom three, relegation may have even been a possibility for the two sides. Nevertheless, they will hope to start afresh and regain their status back among England’s elite.

Nottingham Forest were also unfortunate to miss out on the Champions League, with a very untimely reality check seeing them drop out of the top five, and have to settle for a Conference League place. But will the lure of European football enable the Tricky Trees to enhance their squad to consolidate their status at the top end of the table?

For the second season running, all three promoted teams suffered an immediate return to the Championship in Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

In the end, it was not even close. The Saints, who finished bottom with 12 points, had their fate sealed at the start of April, while there were 13 points between 18th-place Leicester and Tottenham in 17th.

Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland are the teams hoping to avoid a similar fate this time around.

Only goal difference could separate Leeds and Burnley, who both finished on 100 points and 10 clear of Sheffield United in third.

Leeds are the promoted side given the best opportunity of survival. Last season, they went the extra step after missing out on an immediate return 12 months earlier, as Southampton beat them in the play-off final. However, Daniel Farke’s side made no mistake this time around and will be eager to consolidate their top-flight status.

The same can be said for Burnley, who are back in the Premier League at the first time of asking. The Clarets’ successful promotion bid was built on a rock-solid foundation, with a superb run of successive clean sheets and a club-record unbeaten run paving the way for Scott Parker’s side. His primary focus now will be on avoiding a third top-flight relegation in the space of five seasons.

As for Sunderland, they are back in the promised land just seven years after suffering back-to-back relegations to League One. The Black Cats secured their play-off spot with games to spare, but subsequently endured a poor end to the regular season. Nevertheless, they picked themselves up and delivered when it mattered most, with a late Tom Watson winner at Wembley breaking Sheffield United hearts.

Wolves looked like they would be firmly in the relegation battle at the midway point of the 2024-25 season, only for Vitor Pereira to inspire a club-record six-match winning streak that ultimately secured their survival. Having slipped down the table in recent seasons, they are expected to find themselves battling at the wrong end once more, though Pereira will hope his players can build on their momentum from the latter stages of the campaign just gone.

West Ham are also hoping for better fortunes in what will be Graham Potter’s first full season in charge. The Hammers never fully recovered from a poor start to the season under Julen Lopetegui, and barely improved under Potter, who will be pleased to have a transfer window and full pre-season to improve his team, who finished 14th last term.

Fulham and Brentford were in European contention towards the end of the season, though an eighth-place finish would not have been enough anyway. Marco Silva and Thomas Frank must now ensure their respective players are ready to go again, and stay well away from danger.

What betting markets are popular for the Premier League?

Operating as one of the most popular bets in football, if there’s a wager you’re looking to use your Premier League betting tips on, then full-time results and correct scores fit the bill.

With each game, the odds will differ, based on form and quality. For instance, if Arsenal, the team with the best defence last season, were to face off with Southampton, who had the worst attack of those still in the division, you’d expect the Gunners to come out on top.

More popular in recent years have been both teams to score bets. Even if your team loses, you’ll still emerge with cash in hand should they, alongside the victors, make it onto the score-sheet.

Obviously with this being Squawka, we love a stats bet too! These have become more and more prevalent in the last handful of seasons with corners, cards, shots, fouls, passes, tackles, offsides and more all available markets on certain Premier League fixtures.
