Premier League 2022/23 key dates

The 2022/23 Premier League season is currently paused for the World Cup, but when we return, Manchester City will be targeting a third-successive title, having pipped Liverpool to last season’s championship by a single point.

Pep Guardiola’s side are looking to become just the sixth side to win three consecutive titles in English top flight history, and only the second club after Manchester United (1999-2001 and 2007-09) to achieve the feat in the Premier League. Current pace-setters Arsenal may have something to say about that, though.

City have already come close to achieving that feat three seasons ago, winning the title in 2017/18 and 2018/19, but Arsenal are currently leading the charge, and they will be top of the Premier League at Christmas for the first time since 2007/08. Can the Gunners hold out and relive the heady days of the noughties?

Last season’s Premier League title race was a thrilling one with Liverpool taking Man City all the way to the final day before finally succumbing. In the end, just one point separated the two sides at the top of the table, and Man City didn’t make it easy for themselves or their fans, going 2-0 down at home to Aston Villa before coming back to win 3-2.

Both Liverpool and Man City bolstered their squads in the summer with the acquisitions of Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland respectively, but it’s been the latter who have made a considerable impression on the title race so far.

The reigning champions are of course sniffing around near the summit, but it’s an unlikely source in Arsenal who are currently leading the charge. The winter pause for Qatar 2022 has allowed the division to catch its breath, but it’s all guns blazing when players return from the Persian Gulf on Boxing Day.

Liverpool are some 15 points adrift of table-topping Arsenal, so it would take a monumental effort from them to bridge that near-insurmountable gap. Newcastle are lurking around in third, and looking to speed run their disruption of the division’s established hegemony.

Tottenham are eight points behind North London rivals Arsenal in fourth (and have played a game more), but certainly shouldn’t be ruled out either given they have serial medal winner Antonio Conte in the dugout.

Chelsea and Tottenham completed the top four last season, but the former are currently eight points adrift of that final Champions League place. Todd Boehly spent big in the summer on Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the Graham Potter instillation is yet to really take off.

Instead, it’s Newcastle who have put themselves in a strong position to gatecrash the top four. Eddie Howe’s men have the best defensive record in the league and have lost just one game, but it’s been their scintillating attacking play that has impressed more than anything. They look the real McCoy at present and could yet disturb things near the summit.

Man Utd are starting to find their rhythm under Erik ten Hag and will be hoping to really kick on after the World Cup now that Cristiano Ronaldo has left the club. His presence brought a toxic distraction and impeded the progress of Ten Hag’s development-orientated philosophy. Alejandro Garnacho should now have free reign to continue his rapid rise.

Liverpool finished off November with two wins on the spin to really ramp up their recovery. Jurgen Klopp knows what it takes to put together a winning formula, and he will back himself to do so when the Premier League returns. Also keep an eye out for Brighton, who have continued to flourish in the post-Potter era.

The scene has been set near the Premier League’s nether reaches, with Wolves currently propping up the table. They are in a world of trouble, but there are shoots of optimism for when the league returns after the World Cup, with former Spain and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui now in the dugout.

Further across in the Midlands, big spenders Nottingham Forest are still scrambling in the bottom three. Steve Cooper made wholesale changes to his squad in the summer, but they are yet to really get going, though The Tricky Trees did finish up before Qatar 2022 with a win and will be aiming to carry that through to the second half of the season.

Southampton make up the bottom three and have also endured a managerial change of their own, with Ralph Hasenhuttl leaving at the start of November, and Nathan Jones heading to Hampshire from Luton Town. He, like Lopetegui, will be determined to make use of this unprecedented mini pre-season and get the Saints firing when club football returns during the festive period.

All three of those clubs will be looking to collect points and keep Everton, West Ham, Leeds and Bournemouth all down there with them. Three of those clubs are yet to twist on their managers, but with things really starting to heat up, a few owners may pull the metaphorical trigger before things start to get really nervy — check out the odds on the next Premier League manager to be sacked.

For particularly eye-catching fixtures, there may be an array of different betting guides and pointers around the site, so keep your eyes peeled for a special Squawka slant on your betting content ahead of the biggest games on the calendar.

What betting markets are popular for the Premier League?

Operating as one of the most popular bets in football, if there’s a wager you’re looking to use your Premier League betting tips on, then full-time results and correct scores fit the bill.

With each game, the odds will differ, based on form and quality. For instance, if Manchester City, the current Premier League champions, face off with Bournemouth, who are already being tipped as relegation contenders after earning promotion from the Championship, you can expect the Citizens to rack up the goals.

More popular in recent years have been both teams to score bets. Even if your team loses, you’ll still emerge with cash in hand should they, alongside the victors, make it onto the score-sheet.

This also counts for extra-time and any penalty permutations. The Premier League was a strong league for BTTS bets in the 2021/2022 season, with Leicester City leading the way in games that saw both teams find the net. 68% of the Foxes’ games saw BTTS come in.

Obviously with this being Squawka, we love a stats bet too! These have become more and more prevalent in the last handful of seasons with corners, cards, shots, passes, tackles, offsides and more all available markets on certain Premier League fixtures.
