Premier League 2022/23 key dates

The 2022/23 Premier League season is underway and Manchester City are targeting a third-successive title, having pipped Liverpool to last season’s championship by a single point.

Pep Guardiola’s side are looking to become just the sixth side to win three consecutive titles in English top flight history, and only the second club after Manchester United (1999-2001 and 2007-09) to achieve the feat in the Premier League.

City have already come close to achieving that feat three seasons ago, winning the title in 2017/18 and 2018/19, but Liverpool stormed to Premier League glory in 2019/20. Can Jurgen Klopp’s side repeat that magic again? Only time will tell!

Last season’s Premier League title race was a thrilling one with Liverpool taking Man City all the way to the final day before finally succumbing. In the end, just one point separated the two sides at the top of the table, and Man City didn’t make it easy for themselves or their fans, going 2-0 down at home to Aston Villa before coming back to win 3-2.

Both Liverpool and Man City have bolstered their squads in the transfer window, particularly strengthening in attack. Man City won the race for Erling Haaland, who could be the difference this season, already scoring twice on debut, while also adding Kalvin Phillips to tighten the defence. Liverpool, meanwhile, have brought in Darwin Nunez to be their main man through the middle, and he also found the net on the opening weekend of the Premier League. However, they have both seen big names leave too with Man City selling Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively, while Liverpool sold Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich.

Away from last season’s top two we are set to have another fascinating battle for Champions League football.

Chelsea and Tottenham completed the top four last season and they are being backed to do the same, having strengthened over the summer. Third-placed Chelsea took some time to get going in the window, held back by their ownership issues, but Todd Boehly is working quick to strengthen with Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella already signed – and they continue to be linked with a number of names, particularly in defence.

But Tottenham have had one of the best transfer windows so far, with the board backing Antonio Conte. In the past Conte hasn’t had the best of relationships with his board, especially over transfers, but the Italian appears to be building his own squad ready to compete. Tottenham have strengthened in various positions and could even make a push for the Premier League title if they perform as they are expected.

Arsenal have also strengthened their front line with the arrival of Gabriel Jesus and finished just two points behind Tottenham last season, squandering what appeared to be their spot in the top four in the final weeks. The Gunners will fancy their chances of bridging that gap this season, but they may also be keeping an eye on those below them.

Although there was a significant points gap between fifth-placed Arsenal and Manchester United in sixth, the Red Devils will have been boosted by the start of the Erik ten Hag era and the squad he is trying to build. However, they crashed down to earth on the opening weekend after losing 2-1 to Brighton at Old Trafford.

West Ham, meanwhile, will be hoping to challenge them as well, while the likes of Leicester City and Newcastle United will also be hoping to compete for those European places.

Unfortunately as we build towards a fresh campaign it’s often the newly-promoted sides that find themselves as favourites to go straight back down, and it’s no different for 2022/23.

In each of the past two seasons, two of the three promoted sides have been relegated, with Norwich and Watford dropping in 2021/22 and Fulham and West Brom in 2020/21. You have to go back to 2017/18 to find the last time none of the newly promoted sides were relegated from the Premier League – and it’s only happened three times overall (since 1992/93).

Hoping the buck that trend this season are Fulham – who won the Championship with a whopping 90 points – Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest.

The latter, two-time European champions, are back in England’s top flight for the first time since 1998/99 and will be hoping to follow Brentford last season as opposed to Norwich and Watford. Fulham were relegated in 2020/21 and came back at the first time of asking, while Bournemouth have ended a two-season exile.

But also worth keeping an eye on are the likes of Southampton, Leeds and Everton, all of whom struggled last season with their managers amongst the favourites to be the next Premier League manager sacked.

What betting markets are popular for the Premier League?

Operating as one of the most popular bets in football, if there’s a wager you’re looking to use your Premier League betting tips on, then full-time results and correct scores fit the bill.

With each game, the odds will differ, based on form and quality. For instance, if Manchester City, the current Premier League champions, face off with Bournemouth, who are already being tipped as relegation contenders after earning promotion from the Championship, you can expect the Citizens to rack up the goals.

More popular in recent years have been both teams to score bets. Even if your team loses, you’ll still emerge with cash in hand should they, alongside the victors, make it onto the score-sheet.

This also counts for extra-time and any penalty permutations. The Premier League was a strong league for BTTS bets in the 2021/2022 season, with Leicester City leading the way in games that saw both teams find the net. 68% of the Foxes’ games saw BTTS come in.

Obviously with this being Squawka, we love a stats bet too! These have become more and more prevalent in the last handful of seasons with corners, cards, shots, passes, tackles, offsides and more all available markets on certain Premier League fixtures.
