Unsurprisingly, all three of the teams relegated from the Premier League last term are favourites to bounce back up this term. Though all three have had their own problems to encounter in the early stages, all three squads do look very strong as compared to the majority of Championship clubs.
It has only been seven years since Leicester were champions of England and, this season, they’re favourites to secure the second-tier title.
Leeds and Southampton were expected to be among the Foxes’ main challengers, Leeds are beginning to find their feet, whilst Southampton are looking ropey under Russell Martin. Middlesbrough, who were excellent under Michael Carrick at times last term, are struggling badly at the moment.
Who will win the Championship title?

Leicester have made an early statement of intent as they look to secure an immediate return to the top flight, winning each of their opening four matches. An impressive victory over Southampton after the international break has strengthened their case.
Despite losing the likes of James Maddison and Youri Tielemans, Enzo Maresca bolstered the Foxes with proven Premier League experience with the signings of Harry Winks and Conor Coady, whilst there are also plenty of players who remain, such as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Wilfried Ndidi, and Ricardo Pereira, who are a level above the competition in the Championship.
In Daniel Farke, Leeds opted for a manager with previous experience of winning promotion from the Championship.
The Whites have managed to retain the majority of their squad and with a few additions in key areas. After Deadline Day, the forward options at Elland Road are talent-filled and deep. A front four of Joel Piroe, Wilfried Gnonto, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter is exceptional for the level, but can see the likes of Jaidon Anthony, Daniel James, and, soon, Patrick Bamford, also be brought in.
Southampton have conceded far too many goals so far this season to be considered a serious challenger for the title. The squad is impressive, but the style hasn’t worked for them yet with too many mistakes being made for the chances created to paper over the cracks.
Of the non-relegated teams, Preston North End have had the most impressive start. The Lilywhites have to operate on a budget, as all non-parachute payment clubs do, but have made an excellent fist of being hard to beat so far this season.
Norwich, Watford and West Brom – all with recent memories of the Premier League – possess quality in their squads to compete as well. While fresh from promotion last season, the bookmakers are expecting another positive campaign for Ipswich Town, this has been backed up by performances and results for the East Anglian side so far.
Who will reach the play-offs in the Championship?
Looking more closely at that aforementioned trio, Norwich will be hoping to improve on last season’s mid-table disappointment.
Boss David Wagner has won promotion from this division before during his time in charge of Huddersfield Town, and the Canaries have added experience in the shape of Shane Duffy in defence and Ashley Barnes in attack.
Valerien Ismael is the latest manager on the Watford conveyor belt. The Hornets have allowed over 20 players to leave the club already this summer, but inconsistencies off the field often hold back what is evidently a talented squad.
After replacing Steve Bruce with Carlos Corberan, West Brom enjoyed a strong finish to last season, though their surge was just too late for a play-off place.
Nevertheless, the Baggies will hope to take some momentum from that run into this season.
Ipswich and Stoke City are among the other teams that are being backed for a play-off tilt. The same can be said for last season’s beaten play-off semi-finalists Sunderland and Coventry City – although the Sky Blues are without star striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has joined Portuguese giants Sporting CP.
Who will be relegated from the Championship?
Sheffield Wednesday have endured a disappointing return to the second tier after their dramatic promotion last season. There is little for the Owls’ fans to grasp onto as there is little in the performances or the recruitment to see how things will drastically improve under current coach Xisco Munoz.
Rotherham United avoided the drop last season, but generally struggle to consolidate their status at this level. Although, they have bolstered their squad with the signings of Grant Hall and Cafu this summer, there needs to be some signs of improvement from Matt Taylor’s side to keep them away from the battle.
Neil Warnock was able to guide Huddersfield Town away from relegation last season in dramatic circumstances. But the 74-year-old is expected to see his side struggle again this term.
Queens Park Rangers have something about them under Gareth Ainsworth, but quality-wise, they do look a little short in their squad.
Swansea City and Middlesbrough have endured terrible starts and currently sit in the relegation zone. Whilst both probably have enough quality in their squads to pull clear over time, it will be interesting to see if either club decide to dispense with the services of their managers soon.

When do you release your Championship tips?
We aim to post our Championship tips and predictions around 48 hours before kick-off, allowing punters time to weigh up their options. Time periods and odds can change depending on fixture congestion.
For every Championship game throughout the season you will find a tip on this page ahead of the game getting underway and for some games we’ll even have specially curated Squawka Bet previews with all of the relevant Championship odds, team news, stats and of course most importantly – our betting tips and predictions.
Today’s Championship betting tips
Looking for tips on today’s Championship games? Check the top of this page to see our tips for the upcoming matches. When betting on the day of the game, there is plenty to consider and you should always check the team news and form ahead of kick-off.
Championship In-Play betting tips
With so many Championship games now broadcast live, the league provides a great opportunity for some In Play betting tips.
This particular method of wagering allows you to tailor your bets to the unfolding action, whether that’s a high-profile play-off second-leg or a tussle at the bottom of the table.
Full Time Results
The Championship is often referred to as a league where any team can beat another, and that certainly can be the case. However, this means that there is often great value to be found in the Full Time Results markets, also known as win-draw-win bets.
With many games often taking place at the same time either at 3pm on Saturday afternoon or 7.45pm on a Tuesday evening, this particular market also offers ample opportunity for a Championship accumulator.
Both Teams to Score
Both teams to score has become a very popular bet in recent years as the bet is still alive until the final whistle. The premise is simple – you’re backing both teams to find the net during the 90 minutes. Again, with low-odds usually available, it may be worth combining a few both teams to score selections for a tasty Championship accumulator on a Saturday afternoon for example.
These were the teams most likely to see both teams score in their games according to the 2022/2023 season’s stats:
- Middlesbrough – 63%
- Sunderland – 60%
- Swansea City – 57%
Meanwhile, seven teams shared the lowest percentage (41%) of games in which both teams scored in the Championship last season.
Player Total Shots
You are now even able to bet on the amount of shots a player takes in a game and this type of bet is popular with our stats-loving Squawka experts. In the Championship you can usually bet on the Overs/Unders markets on how many attempts at goal a player will make in a game.
Player Total Tackles
As above, this bet allows you to wager on how many tackles a certain player will make over the course of a 90 minute match, over or above the line set by the bookmaker.
Bookings
There are several different markets available on bookings now too. You can back a certain player to receive a booking for example, or even a red card, or you can back the amount of cards shown in a match altogether.
You can even back how many cards are shown to a certain team, or a team to receive more cards than their opponents and we have all the stats to back up our selections in this market too.
One player to consider in this market is Watford midfielder Hamza Choudhury, who picked up no fewer than 14 yellow cards last term – the joint highest amount in the league.
Corners Taken
You can also bet on Under/Over markets in corners in 2023/2024 and also on the ‘Corners Match Result’ market, where you bet on one team to win more than the other during the match.
This Weekend’s Sky Bet Championship Predictions
Looking for some bets on this weekend’s Championship action? Saturday afternoon is when the league really comes to life and we’ve got you covered with the best tips, offers and price boosts at Squawka Bet. Just scroll to the top of this page to find our latest betting tips on the English second tier.
Championship Price boosts
Some bookmakers such as Betfair do offer boosted prices on Championship games. We’ll bring you all the latest enhanced new customer offers, but in the Championship in particular you’re more likely to find offers for all customers, with Sky Bet in particular offering specially selected boosts ahead of most Championship fixtures.
Championship Accumulators
Given the research and knowledge that backs up our Championship Tips, you can now feel confident in placing an accumulator. This is a bet that combines your selections from several different matches for even better value. You can choose different markets on different matches should you wish, but most punters decide to stick to the same markets, perhaps backing ten different teams from five games to find the net in a Championship BTTS accumulator.
Best bookmakers for Championship
Every bookmaker offers a great depth of markets in this league, although some more than others. There are several other factors to take into account when deciding upon a bookmaker to back our Championship tips with. For example, how much value do their odds provide, what is their customer service like and whether they produce any Championship betting offers.
Here are some of the best bookmakers to consider.
Which other competitions do you offer tips for?
You will never struggle for tips with our extensive range of betting knowledge here at Squawka Bet. We aim to offer tips on all of the top leagues in the world and some more obscure ones too.

Championship Free Bets & Offers
You can always find great value Championship odds on some of the more popular bookmakers around, but there are also often some excellent price boosts and enhancements available for even better bang for your buck.
And if none of them take your fancy, almost all bookmakers offer the chance to get your hands on a sign-up bonus, usually in the shape of some free bets which is a great way to get your Championship betting experience off to the best possible start.
