The 2022/23 Ligue 1 season returns on December 28 following the World Cup.

Defending Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are naturally leading the charge 15 games into the campaign. They claimed their 10th league title last campaign after wrestling the gong off shock 2020/21 winners Lille.

PSG will now be searching for number 11, which would put them clear as France’s most successful side – they are currently tied on 10 wins with Marseille and Saint-Etienne.

Can they do it? Let’s see when club football returns later this month!

Who will win the Ligue 1 title?

PSG’s Ligue 1 win last season was pretty comfortable, finishing 15 points clear of second-placed Marseille, the biggest gap between first and second in any of Europe’s top five leagues. A managerial change in the summer — with Christophe Galtier replacing Mauricio Pochettino — hasn’t made much of a  difference for their title-chasing ambitions.

PSG are currently top of the league after 13 wins and two draws from their opening 15 matches. Galtier has in fact got Lionel Messi firing in Ligue 1, while Neymar is back to his absolute best and Kylian Mbappe continues to be a pain for defenders. If PSG do manage to win the league again, it’ll be the third time they have won at least two titles in a row, with their best streak being the four achieved between 2012 and 2016.

Their closest rivals so far this season are Lens. With PSG still unbeaten, it would have been a fair assumption to concede that Galtier’s men have all but wrapped up the title already — but Lens are only five points behind, with only one defeat of their own. A 10-point gap separates PSG from third-placed Rennes, so it looks like Lens may be their only title challengers in the New Year.

Who will finish in the Ligue 1 top three?

As the lowest of Europe’s top five leagues, Ligue 1 do not get the same Champions League numbers as the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A. While those leagues all get four participants which all go directly into the group stage, France only have three Champions League spots, and the third-placed side has to enter into the third qualifying round.

So, while others have exciting races for the top four, Ligue 1 is an even more dramatic battle to finish in the top three – and preferably top two for that direct passage to the Champions League group stage. In 2021/22, Monaco joined Marseille and PSG in the top three, but in these early stages it is Rennes who are holding that spot. With 31 points from their opening 15 matches, Rennes are only one ahead of fourth-placed Marseille, while Lorient (28 points), Monaco (27 points) and Lille (26 points) shouldn’t be written off just yet.

Who will be relegated from Ligue 1?

At the opposite end of the table, Bordeaux, Metz and Saint-Etienne were all relegated to Ligue 2 last season, with the latter losing to Auxerre in the promotion/relegation play-off.

Interestingly, four clubs will be directly relegated this season and only two promoted from the second tier as Ligue 1 undergoes a restructuring from the 2023/24 season onwards. Going forward from next campaign, there will be only 18 Ligue 1 clubs (as opposed to the usual 20), so there is a lot at stake this term.

Currently occupying those four fateful places are Angers, Strasbourg, Ajaccio and Auxerre, though there are just six points separating the relegation zone from 10th. It is extremely tight down there, so expect fireworks in the second half of this season.

Full-time results

Perhaps one of the most popular online betting markets, if you’re looking for a sure-fire wager to put those Ligue 1 tips to use, is the full-time result.

Though each game differs from odds to form, individual talent and injury crisis, as long as you clue up with our predictive previews, you’ll have the chance to secure yourself some quick wins.

As long as you’re always tipping the team Kylian Mbappe plays for to score goals galore, you can never go wrong…

To score and win tips

Here’s a double-win for you: bet on the team you think will win and score and claim some of the best Ligue 1 free bets going around.

For this particular wager, you’ll want to focus on the big guns, the teams that won’t let you down: PSG, Lyon, Marseille and the like.

Then all you need to do is sit back and watch the goals and points rake in.

Both teams to score

Both teams need to score either within the 90 minutes or after extra time, including penalty permutations, regardless of the final result, for you to land a BTTS bet.

Sounds juicy enough, right? Well, if you’re looking to cash in on it, the teams you’ll want to keep an eye out for are PSG (scored 90 goals last season) and Monaco (Wissam Ben Yedder was second only to Kylian Mbappe with 25 goals last season).

Penalty specialists

This one is just as easy as the BTTS wager, and definitely, a market that you’ll want to delve into with the Ligue 1 betting tips on hand.

All you have to do is decide whether or not you think the game will feature a penalty.

Interestingly enough, it’s Marseille and Nice (10 each) that racked up the most penalties across last season. Ajaccio have won the most this term with seven, while Nice have six.

To score a header

If the goal scored is via the player’s head then this bet is an eligible one to dive into.

Fortunately, across Ligue 1 there are plenty of individuals capable of doing so — six feet and above — which makes the odds of a headed goal going in every weekend wager-worthy.

Andy Delort and Ludovic Ajorque scored the most headed goals in Ligue 1 last season with six each. Martin Terrier has already bagged four this term.

Player total shots

Fans of attackers, assemble – this particular market leans heavily on strikers and the French cohort have plenty to offer on the betting front.

The man to lead the charts last season was, of course, Kylian Mbappe with 123 — 30 more than any other player. He is currently on 60 — the most yet again.

Player total tackles

If you’re looking to wager on all things defence, look no further. Squawka Bet are offering exactly that in the form of the ‘player total tackles’ market.

Indeed, if you are looking for a big handout, the players providing the most enticing Ligue 1 odds — well, at least they were last season — are Benjamin Andre with 123, followed by Laurent Abergel with 110. Andre is once again out in front this season with 60.

Bookings

If recent events have taught us anything, it’s that Ligue 1 is a feisty and simmering affair, capable of providing all the drama, and in some cases, all the cards.

Last season saw 13 players receive at least 10 yellow cards, none more than Marco Verratti’s 12. There were also 11 players to receive more than one red card in Ligue 1 last season, with Dante being the worst (3).

Verratti has been a naughty boy this season as well with five yellows already — only Oumar Gonzalez (six) has collected more.

Players offside

A more lucrative market to put those Ligue 1 tips to use, offsides have been a problem for managers across the globe since the dawn of time — or the inception of football.

Fortunately, you’ll now be able to punt on it and finally cash in on that middle-toe, armpit offside call instead of raging at the TV, even if it is your team involved.

A nice change of pace if you ask us.

Corners taken

This particular market involves an over/under tally to choose from and could make a great addition to any Ligue 1 betting accumulators.

You’ll want to make sure you read our predictive betting previews before you take a stab in the dark — we’ll ensure you’ve got the right data to emerge with cash in hand on the total number of corners notched up in any game across the 2022/23 season.

Ligue 1 VAR specials

We all know what Ligue 1 think of VAR — *cue the boos*. However, despite the negativity towards it, there’s still plenty to make use of in the Ligue 1 betting markets.

Whether it’s another Neymar goal ruled offside, or another red-card-fest between the Brazilian and practically the rest of the league, where VAR is concerned, there’ll be plenty to wager on.

So, keep your eyes peeled as the season continues to unfold and provide us with plenty of action and intrigue.
