When do Squawka release their Bet-Builder Tips?
Where possible, we’ll look to release a bet-builder tip on this page every 24 hours for an upcoming fixture within the next 24-48 hours following our publication of the bet. What is a bet-builder?
A bet-builder allows a bettor to combine a number of bets into one to create a multiple in the same event.
It is a bet composed of multiple legs, which are often related to each other, creating an accumulator that multiplies up the odds of each leg to create a bigger priced bet.
Bet-builders have been a feature of the betting industry for a few years now and have become a very popular product for bettors and bookmakers alike.
Most bookmakers, especially online ones, will have a bet builder function for at least some of it’s offering, just in football, though it is currently more popular in football than in other sports.
Some bookmakers may refer to bet builders differently, mainly in order to try and create some brand identity for their product. For example, William Hill went with Build #YourOdds, Build-A-Bet is Sky Bet’s offering, #GetAPrice is for Ladbrokes. Many of these names refer back to one of the initial key offerings of these features in that bettors were encouraged to tweet the bookmakers for a price on a particular selection.
What markets can I include on a bet-builder?
This very much depends on the bookmaker that is being used to create a bet-builder. Some bookmakers allow almost all of the markets that they generate to be used in a bet-builder, whereas others are much more restrictive.
Some commonly used bets for legs on bet-builders in football include the match win/draw/loss market, over/under goals, both teams to score, corners, total cards and handicap markets.
More recently, the addition of player props has added a new and exciting dimension to bet-builders. These markets include first or anytime goalscorers, assists, player shots, player shots on target, player tackles, player fouls, player cards, and player passes.
There are often other markets that can be included on bet-builders, this will depend on the offering of the bookmaker.
What are the benefits of bet-builders?
The benefits to bet-builders are that if a bettor has a particular interest or strong angle on a particular match then they are able to bet on it in a different way.
This may then provide the bettor with a bigger price for the bet by combining a few aspects of the match together into a single bet.
There are ways of combining many smaller odds views into a single bet with a bigger price, which is more appealing to bettors.
There are, of course, also negatives to this type of betting. As with any multiple/accumulator bettors can be tempted to go too far in the chase for a big price. There is also the age-old issue in that if and when bettors lose out by a single leg in the multiple they can become convinced that they are so close to a win and continue to try to bet these types of bets, even if it isn’t a winning strategy.
The biggest detriment is that the margin that the bookmakers build into each of the markets is multiplied up when included in a multiple, such as a bet-builder.
How do I place a bet-builder bet?
Again, this depends wholly on the bookmaker that you will be placing your bets with, but it’s usually a rather simple process. We’ve produced a step-by-step guide below on how to place a bet-builder with BetMGM – but it’s a similar process with the majority of bookmakers as follows:
Step One: Head to the bookmaker of your choice – in our case BetMGM – log in to your account (or sign up if you haven’t previously created an account) and head to the sportsbook section of the site.
Step Two: Navigate to the match that you wish to place a bet-builder bet on and check the top banner running across the top of the page. With BetMGM, the Bet Builder section is placed next to ‘All’ at the top and you’ll find it in a similar position with most bookmakers.
Step Three: Now, you can start adding selections to your bet-builder. For this Liverpool vs West Ham EFL Cup clash, we’ve backed Liverpool to win, both teams to find the net, Dominik Szoboszlai to have over 0.5 shots on target and Edson Alvarez to be shown a card for total odds of 9/1.
Step Four: Now, you need to enter the stake you’re willing to place on the bet and hit ‘Place Bet’ to get your selections on. All that’s left to do now is sit back, watch the match and hope each pick is a winner and you’ll be quids in!
How are bet-builder odds calculated?
Bet-builder odds are calculated in the same way as an accumulator, with one big difference.
Often, because the events are in the same event, there are something called ‘related contingencies’ i.e. one event will affect the other. A simple example of this is if one included a correct score of 1-1 in the bet-builder then attempted to add a team to score, this wouldn’t affect the odds calculation because that is already covered by the initial correct score leg.
However, this can make it difficult to manually calculate bet-builder odds in comparison to a regular accumulator where all of the legs are independent.
As an example, for the bet below. The individual odds of the individual legs are:
- Ivan Sunjic to be booked – 2.75
- Jordan James to be booked – 2.87
- Kelechi Iheanacho – over 0.5 shots on target – 1.3
- Leicester to win – 1.45
- Both Teams To Score – 1.87
If priced up as independent events this would come to 26.8/1, but the price on the Bet Builder is a little shorter.
This is because there is an implied factor of Leicester to score in the both teams to score market, and also because there is a chance that a Kelechi Iheanacho shot on target could be Leicester’s goal.
Are Bet-Builder Bets Worth It?
You have to be prepared to lose money before placing any bets and that is worth remembering before betting on any sports market – whether that’s as a single, multiple of bet-builder.
Different punters prefer different styles of betting. Some may prefer to go for a huge odds accumulator and attempt to gain big returns for a small outlay – something that Bet-Builders can provide – even if that means their chances of winning are much smaller.
You can pick out smaller priced bet-builders though by combining very short odds selections, meaning you can be a favourites backer and still have a high chance of gaining returns despite having a handful of different selections on your bet.
How To Win on Bet-Builder Bets
Picking a winning bet is not an easy process. We recommend more than anything that you do your research – check the stats, check recent matches, check the injury lists. Check all of the information you have available before you place your bet.
If you want to win more often, it stands to reason that picking shorter odds selections will make you more likely to gain returns. However, you need to stake more in order to return bigger winnings from your bet-builder bets if you’re looking to make more profit. It’s all about finding the right balance for your own betting requirements.
