How we rate and review free bets and betting offers

Here at Squawka, we’ve been reviewing bookies for years becoming one of the authoritative voices when it comes to knowing which bookmaker is best to sign up with.

Our process is the same for each bookmaker. They have to be fully licensed for us to consider reviewing them and the security of their site is paramount.

Once they’ve passed both of those tests, we look a little deeper into their processes. We explore their payment, and withdrawal, methods as well as how helpful their customer support options are.

We don’t think that’s enough though and spend time looking at their selection of markets available, their odds and their overall user experience. It’s at this point that we’ll sign up with the bookmaker, claim their sign up offer and make our first deposit.

Our review process is extensive but we feel this gives both us, and you, the best chance to have all the relevant information before signing up and get your hands on the best best betting sign up offers. If you’d like to know more about our review process, you can peruse our Methodology – How We Rate Bookmakers page

What Are Free Bets?

Bookmakers will use a variety of methods to try and get you to sign up with them and use their sportsbook. The most common of those methods is by offering free bets when you make your first deposit.

The amount of free bets can offer wildly so it’s always worth checking our offers at the top of this page to see where you can get the most value from new customer betting offers.

Free Bets are just that; a form of betting promotion giving you free money loaded into your account to be used on your punts. This money isn’t withdrawable and sometimes comes with some complex conditions so checking the terms and conditions is always worthwhile.

These Free Bets are a great option to build your balance and make your time with a bookmaker a profitable one.

What is a Risk Free bet?

Another potential sign up bonus is the chance to gain a Risk Free bet. This means your first wager will be refunded to you if it settles as a loss. This can sometimes be as cash, sometimes as bet credits.

‘Risk Free’ isn’t a truly accurate statement as you will have to deposit your own money to claim the free bet.

How to claim Free Bet Offers – Step By Step Guide

Signing up with a new bookmaker, and claiming any bookie sign up offers usually follows a similar pattern, regardless of the bookie.

Here we’ll run through the most common way to sign up and claim your Free Bets.

  1. Head to the Bookmaker landing page by using one of our links above. These links will take you straight to the right page to sign up and claim any offers.
  2. Press the join button to begin the account creation process.
  3. Enter your personal details. It’s important to make sure these are correct as you’ll likely need to verify them. Incorrect details could stop you from being able to claim any bonuses.
  4. Create a username and password. You’ll need these each time you log in with your bookmaker so make sure you are able to remember them, whilst ensuring the password is secure.
  5. At this point, some bookmakers will ask you to verify your identity. This might involve uploading a copy of your ID, utility bills or proof of income.
  6. Make your first deposit. Most bookmakers have various payment methods, including debit card, online wallets (such as Paypal) or mobile payment methods (such as Apple Pay). Please note that bookmakers cannot accept deposits via credit cards.
  7. You may have to place your first bet to qualify for any Free Bet so check the terms and conditions to make sure your first bet meets the criteria.

How Can I Use My Free Bets?

Free bets can typically be used however bettors would like with minimal restrictions on the sports, markets and events available.

There is, however, a pair of terms that are typically enforced when bettors place a free bet: a minimum odds requirement and bet size requirement. The bulk of bookmakers requires bettors to place their free bets on a selection with minimum odds, typically rated at 1.5. Additionally, free bets are typically required to be used in full with any unused bet forfeited when the remainder is placed.

Although free bets can be used in whichever way bettors please, there are a number of strategies that bettors use to make the most of the free bet offer. One of the most popular strategies used by bettors is to hedge their free bet with a real money wager.

This ensures that bettors will walk away a winner, regardless of whether or not their real money or free bet settles as a win. Bettors will typically use the free bet counterpart on the less-certain outcome decided upon.

New Customer Free Bet Offers Terms and Conditions

The terms and conditions hold the answers to almost all of our questions when looking at a free bet sign up offers.

Packed with legal jargon, the terms and conditions aren’t always the easiest to understand. To better get to grips with exactly what kind of free bet you’re looking at, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with exactly what the language in the T&Cs is trying to tell us.

Refer back to the following terms and their definitions if you ever find yourself stuck in the small print.

Bonus code

A bonus code, also often known as a promo code, is the name given to the word, phrase or number required to enter to claim a betting welcome offer.

Not all promotions require a bonus code to claim the offer and if there’s no mention of one in the terms and conditions, chances are that one isn’t needed. However, if there’s a small portion of text informing of the bonus code, it’s important not to forget it when claiming the offer.

Bonus codes can be entered either on account creation or on deposit. A free-text box labelled “bonus code” or “promo code” is your clue that it’s time to enter that “FREEBONUS10” (or similar) code to claim the offer.

Value of free bets

Although free bets cannot be exchanged for cash in any circumstance, the value of the free bets gives bettors a figure of exactly how much these would be worth as a cash equivalent.

The value of the free bets can be used much in the same way as the cash equivalent, although the stake will not be returned when placing a wager.

Where the free bet can be used (sportsbook/casino etc)

The majority of bookmaker offers in the UK offer multiple betting types often including, but not limited to, sports betting, casino, live casino and poker.

When issued with a free bet by a betting site, the terms and conditions of the offer often limit exactly where the bonus funds can be used. The bulk of free bets will be able to be used in the sports betting markets.

However, it is not uncommon for betting sites to offer a free bet in a different area of the online betting business. An example of this would be a promotion in which new bettors are awarded 10 free casino spins as part of the sports betting welcome offer.

Qualifying terms

Free bets are rarely simply handed out to bettors at bookmakers – there is often a small amount of qualifying criteria that must be met before a free bet is awarded.

The qualifying terms come in a variety of different forms ranging from the minimum deposit and requirement payment method to the minimum odds and wagering requirements enforced.

Minimum deposit amount & payment methods that are valid for the free bet bonus

When claiming a free bet bonus, bettors are often required to deposit a minimum amount to trigger the first of the qualifying criteria and get the full new customer offers.

The minimal deposit required will often be around the £5 to £10 mark and must be met in order to claim the free bet bonus. How bettors add funds to their account is just as important as the amount deposited and bookmakers often have restrictions on which banking methods can be used.

UK bookmakers will usually require initial deposits to be made by debit card or bank transfer and prohibit PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and others when claiming a welcome offer. Additional payment information will be verified in the terms and conditions of each welcome offer.

Minimum qualifying odds to place or unlock the free bet

The minimum qualifying odds required to unlock the free bet is the section of the terms and conditions that catches the majority of people out.

When placing the initial qualifying sports bet, bookmakers will often include a minimum odds value that bettors must match to unlock the free bet. Typically, this value is around a minimum of 1.5, meaning that the initial wager must be on odds of at least 1.5. If bettors fail to match these qualifying odds, they could compromise the entire welcome offer.

Additionally, a minimum odds requirement is often required on the free bet issued to bettors. A minimum odds value of 1.5 is usually the threshold and requires bettors to place their free sports bet in full with the minimum odds of 1.5.

Wagering requirements

The wagering requirement, given as a multiple, informs how many times the deposit and/or bonus funds must be wagered before a withdrawal can be made.

For example, if a £10 free bet bonus comes with a 2x wagering requirement, the bonus must be wagered in full twice. This means that a total of £20 should be used and cycled as sports bets before any of the bonus funds can be withdrawn from the cashier.

The wagering requirements of the best new customer betting offers are typically low, between 0x and 5x the bonus funds. These are particularly low when considering the value of casino bonuses which are often between 30x and 40x the bonus funds.

The period for the free bet bonus

Free sports bets don’t last forever and a time limit is enforced on the welcome offers, restricting the amount of time that free bets can be used.

Free bet bonuses are usually valid from 7 – 30 days and must be used within this time to avoid forfeiting the welcome bonus in full. Bettors should ensure that their free bet funds are used in their entirety before this deadline approaches.

Geographical restrictions

The geographical restrictions enforced on free bets are some of the biggest restrictions enforced on a free bet on registration.

The rules and regulations in online betting are notorious for wildly varying depending on geographical location. Depending on the country, or even the state, of access, the rules surrounding online gaming can vary dramatically.

It’s for this reason that the free bet offers are typically country-specific with bettors from outside of the region unable to claim the offer. Further details surrounding the geographical restrictions can be found in the terms and conditions of the sportsbook of choice.

Different Types of Free Bet Offers:

There is a range of betting sites with welcome bonus that bettors may find when looking to claim a free bet from a UK bookmaker.

From no deposit free bets and free bet insurance to free bet bundles and matched bet free bets, below we highlight all of the main free welcome bet offers available at the best UK bookmakers.

No deposit free bets

A no deposit free bet is one of the rarest welcome offers available in the UK, transferring all of the risks away from the bettor.

As the name suggests, to qualify for this free bet welcome offer, bettors are not required to make a deposit with the bookmaker. Instead, an account can be quickly created and a free bet received.

Due to the nature of these free bet bonuses, the terms and conditions of these promotions are often strict with minimal chance to win large sums.

Free bet insurance

The offer of free bet insurance is not quite the same as a free bet but gives bettors the chance to claim a free insurance policy on bets placed.

This type of betting insurance is often used when bettors create accumulators (also commonly referred to as acca’s). Acca insurance allows bettors to receive a payout if one leg of their accumulator lets them down.

These are particularly popular in football betting and allow for bettors to receive compensation when close to potential large payouts.

Enhanced odds free bets

An enhanced odds free bet is one of the most common free bet welcome offers available in the UK, often launched during popular events.

Enhanced odds give bettors the chance to wager on an event with highly inflated odds. For example, if Anthony Joshua is the clear favourite to win on fight night, a bookmaker may offer an enhanced odds bonus with the odds of winning at 20/1.

These free bet enhanced odds are almost too good for bettors to pass up on, leading to countless new member sign-ups at bookmakers.

Free bet bundles

A free bet bundle is a free bet offer that can be repeated multiple times to create a larger bet offer.

A great example of this is a recent promotion from Betfair. The welcome offer gives a free bet bundle worth up to £100 by offering bettors the chance to claim a £20 free bet when they place £50 worth of bets. The bet offers can be repeated as many as 5 times, translating to a total of £100 available in free bets.

Free bet bundles can be found in a number of different configurations with different sized free bets available in a bundle. The free bet bundles are typically only available to new bettors creating their account with a bookmaker for the first time.

Matched deposit/bet free bets

By far the most popular form of free bet offered as a welcome bonus in the UK is the matched deposit free bet.

This form of free bet is issued following either an initial qualifying deposit or an initial qualifying bet at a bookmaker. Bettors should expect their free bet to be issued immediately following the settlement of their initial qualifying deposit/bet.

Bettors should be mindful of the terms and conditions associated with the matched deposit/bet free bets as these often include qualifying terms including the minimum deposit/bet value and minimum odds requirements.

Additional Types of Bookmaker Offers

Acca Boosts

Acca Boost is offered by several bookies and gives you a great chance to boost your profit on accumulators. This option allows you to apply an enhancement on your accumulator, offering a percentage more on top. This percentage usually rises as the number of legs on your accumulator rises too.

Bet365 has a really good example of this, with the big bookmaker offering you a 2.5% boost on a double all the way up to a 70% boost for a 14-fold accumulator or higher.

Enhanced Odds

Bookmakers will sometimes offer enhanced odds in an effort to get you to deposit your money. This could be on a single event or an accumulator.

Sky Bet are famous for their enhanced odds, offering higher odds on certain outcomes in most Premier League games as well as horse races and other sporting events.

Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG)

Best Odds Guaranteed has become an industry staple over the past few years, with multiple bookmakers offering this promotion on their horse racing market. In the simplest terms, a bookmaker will pay you out at the bigger odds if the starting price (the price a horse goes off at when the race gets underway) is greater than the odds when you placed your bet.

Early Payouts

Early payouts have been a relatively new addition to the market, with Bet365 being the main bookmaker to offer this. In select leagues, a straight win bet on a team will be classed as a winner if the team you have backed goes into a two goal lead, even if they go on to lose the game. This promotion is also available on other sports, including American Football where you are paid out early if your team goes into a 17 point lead.

It’s been rare but there have been occasions where a team has gone 2-0 up, resulting in an early payout, before going 4-2 down, resulting in an early payout for the other team, before the game has finished 4-4, resulting in a win for punters that had backed the draw. It can’t be too often all three possible outcomes have won over the years!

Acca Freeze

Sky Bet have introduced the newest promotion into the betting market with Acca Freeze. This option allows you to freeze one of the selections on your accumulator when it’s winning, meaning that leg will be classed as a winner even if the final result would have resulted in a loss.

There are two different ways to make this work in your favour. If your accumulator is close to winning late on, you can freeze a game you think might have a late goal and lock in the profit. Another way to try and utilise this is by backer a number of favourites and one big outsider. If the outsiders take the lead, freeze that fixture and lock in the least likely leg to win. We’ve documented a great example of how to your Acca Freeze here.

What are ‘Bet & Get’ Offers?

Bet & Get offers are some of the most popular free bet offers available at UK sportsbooks and follow a simple pattern of qualifying and reward.

To qualify for the bet & get offers, bettors are simply required to place a sports bet to receive a free bet from their welcome offer. These types of welcome offers do typically require bettors to satisfy some qualifying criteria when making these initial sports bets with a minimum amount and minimum odds required.

Once the qualifying bet has been placed, bettors will either receive their free bet immediately or immediately following the settlement of the wager.

How Many Free Bets Can I Claim?

Free bet sign up offers with bookmakers are usually a one time deal, meaning you’ll only be able to claim the initial deal when you first sign up.

Bookmakers know the importance of keeping existing customers happy though and frequently will award you free bets, or other bonuses, periodically. It’s always worth signing up for their promotion emails and keeping an eye on your account for details of bonuses, especially in the build up, and during big sporting events.

Another important thing to consider is that you’ll only be able to sign up to each bookmaker once so won’t be able to collect multiple bonuses. You can, of course, sign up to multiple different bookmakers though, widening your choice of bonuses, markets and odds.

Different Bet Types Available with Your New Customer Offers

Single Bet

This is the most straightforward wager you can make. You are placing a bet on a specific outcome in an event. This could be as broad as Liverpool to win the Premier League or as granular as Erling Haaland to have over 2.5 shots on target. You can place a single bet on any sport or event or even on things like politics or TV specials.

Each Way Bet

This type of bet is traditionally used in horse racing. Here you are actually making two bets. One bet on the selection to win outright and one bet on the selection to finish in the ‘places’. This changes from race to race but is usually awarded to horses that finish in the top three or four.

One important thing to note here is that your initial stake is double and split across the two outcomes. So a £5 each way bet on Constitution Hill to win the Arkle would mean you are placing £5 on him to win and £5 on him finishing in the places, making a total bet of £10.

Lay Bet

This is a relatively simple one too. With a lay bet you are predicting that an event WON’T happen. Instead of backing Tottenham to win, you would be laying them winning, or backing them to not win. This in example a draw or a Tottenham loss would result in your selection winning.

Handicap Bet

Handicap betting is a great way of increasing the odds of an event if you are fairly certain of an outcome. If you think Man United are really going to put Crystal Palace to the sword you could place a bet on Man United winning with a -2 handicap. This means a one goal win (or draw/loss) would result in a loss for your bet, a two goal win would mean you get your money back and a three goal (or greater) win would put those winnings in your pocket!

Multiple

Multiple bets are wagers on two, or more, outcomes. A double bet would include two selections on your betting slip (both Liverpool and Man City to win, for example) with one stake. Both outcomes have to happen for you to win.

You can make this bet a treble too (adding in Arsenal to win too) but that increases the risk, as you’d need all three sides to win to return a winning selection.

Things get more interesting, and riskier, when you increase the number of selections to create an accumulator (a bet with four or more outcomes). The returns will be much higher but it’s certainly more difficult to predict a higher number of outcomes and just one being wrong will result in you losing your bet.

Forecast/Tricast Betting

Another type of bet usually associated with horse racing. In this one you are betting on multiple horses finishing in the winning positions of a single race.

There are small nuances in forecasts and tricasts too. A straight forecast is a bet on a particular horse finishing first and another finishing second. It’s the same with a straight tricast but with the added jeopardy of predicting which horse will finish third.

A reverse forecast or tricast gives you a little more wiggle room in that you have to select the horses that will finish first and second (and third in a tricast) but in any order.

Over/Under Betting

Another popular type of bet is the over/under bet. This type of bet focuses on specific events in a match, whether that be the total number of goals, number of corners or cards or even a combination of all of them.

The most famous example is the over/under 2.5 goal line in football, which has become an accumulator favourite over the years.

Lucky 15

This type of bet involves four outcomes of four different events. Most famously a bet used in horse racing, it can be used in other sports including football.

A Lucky 15 is named as it actually consists of 15 individual bets; every possible single, double, treble and a four fold accumulator.

This means that you don’t need all four legs to win to make a profit. 3 legs coming in means you’ll win any combinations of the singles and doubles, as well as the relevant treble.

Best Betting Offers For Existing Customers

Betfred: Double Delight & Hat-trick Heaven

888 Sport: Acca Club

Which Bookmakers have ‘Free Bet Clubs’

There is a range of free bet clubs available in the UK across a range of available bookmakers, each with its own unique selling points.

A betting club holds a loose definition but can be thought of as exclusive benefits, often on an opt-in basis, granted to bettors that satisfy certain criteria. Free bets are typically the rewards in these bet clubs, although this is not the only benefit available.

Some free bet clubs offer additional benefits including power-ups, free spins and additional exclusive benefits and are available to all bettors.

Paddy Power

Paddy’s Rewards Club is one of the most popular free bets clubs in the UK with the famous tagline “Loyalty’s dead. Live for rewards.”.

Bettors that qualify for a reward by placing bets online or in-store are able to claim a free bet up to the value of £10. There are three main ways in which a bettor can qualify for the £10 free bet bonus:

  • Place 1 bet of £5 or more on Sports, Lotteries, Virtuals or a shop betting machine – rewarded with a Power-Up the following Monday
  • Place 5 bets of £5 or more on Sports, Lotteries, Virtuals or a shop betting machine – rewarded with a £5 free bet the following Monday
  • Place 5 bets of £10 or more on Sports, Lotteries, Virtuals or a shop betting machine – rewarded with a £10 free bet the following Monday

Paddy’s Reward Club can be used in conjunction with the welcome offer available.

Sky Bet

The Sky Bet Club gives bettors the chance to choose their own benefits – allowing customisation of the bookmaker rewards to suit individual players.

The weekly rewards that can be selected include a £5 free bet, a £2.50 free bet +25 free spins, 50 free spins and a £6 in-play free bet. The qualifying criteria for each of these available bonuses are the same – to bet £25 during the Mon-Sun week.

Bets can be made in any increments with all bet sizes counting towards the £25 minimum, although the minimum odds for each bet must be a minimum of 1/1 (2.0) to qualify. Any sports can be wagered on when looking to qualify for the weekly offer.

Key 2024 Sporting Events to Maximise Your Betting Offers

2023 may have come to a close but fear not, 2024 is set to be a stunning year of sport, not least in football as the 2023/2024 season comes to a close and we find out who will be crowned champions of the Premier League, Champions League and all of Europe’s top divisions – plus which teams will be promoted and relegated in the EFL and when that’s all over, we have the excitement of Euro 2024 to get stuck in to from Germany.

But you don’t have to limit your free bet plays to football. In Racing, the world famous Cheltenham Festival took place in March and all of the usual action in both the jumps and the flats will occur at Ascot, Epsom and of course Aintree, where the Grand National takes place each year.

Bookending the year as always will be the World Darts Championship. The 2024 version of the event saw Luke Humphries triumph and Luke Littler emerge as the new darting superstar and the action will start again the following December at London’s Alexandra Palace. Of course, between those two there will be the usual big events to follow including the World Matchplay, the Premier League and Grand Prix.

And speaking of the Grand Prix, the 2024 Formula One World Championship got underway in Bahrain on the 2nd of March and culminate at Abu Dhabi in November, with Silverstone hosting the British GP on July 7th.

The first Grand Slam event of the year in Tennis, the Australian Open is already in the history books, but the big summer events in France, the United Kingdom and the USA and we are all set for a huge festival of Rugby Union in the Autumn as France also plays host to the Rugby World Cup.

In Cricket, there will be an T20 World Cup to enjoy in the West Indies and United States in June, while England’s Test team have a jam-packed schedule this year, starting with a tour of India prior to the visits of Sri Lanka and the West Indies in the summer.

Are Free Bets Worth It?

It’s definitely worth using any free bets you might obtain from signing up with a bookmaker. They are effectively a free shot at making profit or building a good balance.

Can You Withdraw Your Free Bets?

Whilst your free bets are a chance to make a profit, you won’t be able to cash out your free bets as cash. In most cases any winnings you make from them will be yours to keep but some bookmakers require you to turnover the value of the bet a few times before withdrawing.

What Should You Look for Before Choosing Free Bets?

It’s always worth checking out the terms and conditions surrounding any free bets you might get. Some things to keep an eye on are:

  • Free Bet expiry. Some bookmakers will require you to use your free bets in a certain time period or you’ll lose them.
  • Wagering requirements. As mentioned above, some bookmakers have wagering requirements when it comes to free bets. You might need to turnover the value of the bet 10 times (or more) before you are able to withdraw your winnings.
  • Bookmaker reputation. Reading our reviews will give you a good idea of how reputable a bookmaker is but it’s always worth doing your own research too.
  • Free Bet restrictions. Some bookmakers will restrict the type of bet you can place with their free bets. Some might be exclusive to Bet Builders, whilst others can only be used on horse racing. Make sure you know what markets you can place your free bet on before signing up.

What to Look Out for When Choosing Betting Promotions 2024?

Taking bookmaker promotions at face value, there are a number of details that a bettor should keep an eye out for when searching for the best promotions.

The first area to consider is the minimum deposit value compared to the size of the free bet offer available at a bookmaker. This is the golden ratio when searching for high-quality free bet bonuses and highlights just how good of an offer any given promotion really is. For example, a minimum deposit of £20 for a £5 bonus is much less impressive than a minimum £10 deposit to claim a £10 free bet.

Next up, bettors should check out the wagering requirements on the free bet available. A low wagering requirement is one of the key indicators that a bonus is of good quality and increases the likelihood that a bettor will be able to withdraw a percentage of the free bonus funds following successful sports bets.

Punters should also consider the variety of betting markets available. A limited selection may hinder your ability to place the desired bets.

In addition to the available betting markets, the features and ongoing promotions available at any given UK bookmaker should be considered. Key features such as live streaming, in-play betting, bet builders and more can be found at different online bookmakers.

Finally, bettors should look at the exclusions of the free bets available in the promotion. A good free sports bet is one that can be used in a variety of different markets and offers good flexibility.

What are the Advantages of Free Bets

Free bets offer punters the chance to place a bet without risking a penny of their own money. With no financial commitment, they give you a taste of the betting experience at a bookmaker.

They can be a great way to build your betting confidence, giving you a chance to get used to how the sportsbook works, understand the odds and scour the markets without having to worry about the risk involved. Free bets also encourage repeat engagement, which can result in an increase of profits and, in turn, more free bets. You won’t win them all though, remember!

What are the Disadvantages of Free Bets

Of course, there are some drawbacks to free bets. The biggest one is that most free bets are only available for a limited time. This means you might not be able to place the bet that you truly want to place and rush into trying to use the free bet before you’d usually want to.

Another drawback is that some free bets will have maximum stake requirements, making it harder to pick up larger winnings when using your free bet.

Additionally, there may be restrictions on how you can use your free bets, meaning you might not be able to use your bet on the competition, or game, that you’d prefer.

Withdrawal restrictions are another potential disadvantage of your free bets, meaning you can only withdraw any winnings if certain conditions are met. This could mean you have to place additional wagers before being able to access your free bet winnings.

As always, make sure you read the terms and conditions associated with each free bet you gain.

Why do Bookies Give Free Bets?

The majority of betting sites in the UK offer welcome bonuses to entice new bettors through the digital doors of the online bookmaker.

This isn’t done in an effort of genuine generosity, but rather as a marketing technique to compete with other bookies in the same space. The UK sports betting market is one of the most competitive in the world, with GambleAware reporting that £1.2b is spent on marketing in the gambling industry each year.

Bookmakers offer a range of different welcome bonuses and typically trial these out with a dynamic approach. However, one of the most popular new bettors offers that can be accessed by bettors is the free bet offer.

These are offered in a number of different forms, ranging from simple free bets and acca insurance policies to enhanced odds options. Bookmakers do ultimately offer these promotions to entice players, but that doesn’t mean bettors can’t take advantage of the offers. Quite the opposite is true!

How much can you make on free bets?

Although with free bets you do not get your stake back, that doesn’t mean there isn’t an opportunity to win big. One good offer comes from BetMGM, which offers £40 in free bets when you place a £10 first bet (at odds of 1/1 or greater). With BetMGM, the £40 is spread across 4x £10 free bets, with £10 on Football, £10 on Horse Racing, £10 on an accumulator and £10 on a Free Bet Builder. If we bet £10 on Leicester to beat Leeds in the Championship on Friday evening (at odds of 27/10), we’re set up well for a weekend of betting.

Our Horse Racing Free Bet (minimum odds of 1/1) would be on Anglers Crag to win the 14:08 Eider Handicap Chase at Newcastle, at odds of 7/2 – a return of £35 (with the free bet stake not returned). It’s up to you if you want to take that price or the SP (starting price).

Our Free Bet Builder (minimum odds of 3/1) would be built around Brighton vs Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, picking Brighton to win, BTTS No and Joao Pedro to score anytime for total odds of 23/4 – returning £57.50 (with the free bet stake not included).

We’d also include Brighton winning in our £10 Free Acca (minimum odds of 1/1). As well as Brighton beating Everton, we’d call Aston Villa beating Nottingham Forest, Manchester United beating Fulham, Manchester City beating Bournemouth and Wolves beating Sheffield United, to keep us going across the weekend. At odds of 8/1, that’d return £80 with the free bet stake not returned.

And, finally, our £10 Football Free Bet (minimum odds of 1/1) goes on Monday night’s Premier League London derby between West Ham and Brentford, backing an away victory. At odds of 7/4, a Brentford win returns £17.50 (with the free bet stake not included).

So, all included, if every bet won, the £40 Free Bets from BetMGM for our selections would return a grand total of £190!

A different version of free bets comes in Bet365, where a £10 qualifying bet (must contain at least one selection at odds of 1/5 or greater) gives a 300% welcome bonus up to the value of £30 as free bets.

For this one, we’re starting off with the Premier League, and a qualifying bet on Ollie Watkins to score first in Aston Villa’s game against Nottingham Forest (odds of 7/2).

We’ll stick in the Premier League for two of our £10 free bets, first backing Erling Haaland to score first for Manchester City vs Bournemouth at odds of 12/5, to return £14 (with the free bet stake not included). Then, we’ll back Bukayo Saka to net first in Arsenal’s game against Newcastle, with odds of 5/1 to return £50 without the free bet stake.

And, finally, the 2024 EFL Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea. Liverpool are the favourites, and Mohamed Salah is backed to score against his former club, at 4/1 to score first. That would return £40, with the free bet stake not included.

So for just three £10 free bets this time, that’s a potential return of £104. Not bad!

What happens if you lose a free bet?

If your free bet loses, you don’t get anything back. However, you won’t lose any money from your account either. You just lose the free bet.

Free Bets vs Bonus Offers: What’s the difference?

Free Bets and Bonus Offers are phrases you’ll see a lot on bookmakers, and they are fairly similar. Free Bets – or bonus bets – are often given as welcome offers and do not use the bettors’ money. Of course, the usual caveat is that the stake is not included in the returns. So a £10 bet at 1/1 would bring £10, rather than the £20 you would get if you bet your own £10.

Bonus offers are slightly different, but can also be found in bookmakers’ new customer promotions. Bonus offers are returned as cash and you get to keep the value of that. However, you cannot withdraw the bonus straight away. A lot of the bonus offers come with wagering requirements, meaning you’ll have to make a (specified) minimum number of bets before being able to withdraw. For example, a £10 bonus offer may come with wagering requirements of x4, meaning you’ll have to place £40 worth of bets before being able to withdraw the bonus and any winnings made from the bonus.

Can I Use My Welcome Bonus for Bet Builder Bets?

A lot of bookmakers do allow welcome bonuses to be used on Bet Builders. In fact, some even make that one of the requirements for use of the free bet. It may be 4x £10 free bets, with one of the £10 free bets set aside for a Bet Builder. And for those who don’t know, a Bet Builder is a way of creating your own bet, by combining markets. It’s similar to an accumulator, but is often built around several markets from one event, rather than across more than one. A lot of bookmakers have selected Bet Builder sections on their events, allowing you to combine markets that you may not be able to in an accumulator.

How do I Withdraw my Winnings when I’ve used my Free Bets?

Withdrawing winnings from free bets can be a little confusing, depending on the chosen bookmaker.

Ultimately, the ease of withdrawal depends entirely on the wagering requirements enforced on the free bet bonuses. For the majority of free bet offers, the stake value of the betting credits will not be returned in any winnings.

The best free bet bonuses come with absolutely no wagering requirements and winnings can be withdrawn once the free bets have been used. These can be found in UK bookmakers, but bettors should note that the free bet value cannot be withdrawn without original wagering.

Free bet bonuses that do come with a wagering requirement will often be expressed in the form of a multiple. The wagering requirements on free bets are usually low, between 1x and 5x the bonus value and denotes the number of times the free bet value must be “cycled” through the bookmaker. For example, for a £5 free bet with a 2x wagering requirement, bettors are required to cycle the winnings from the £5 free bet until the total amount wagered equals £10 before withdrawing.

Difference Between Free Sports Bets and Casino Free Bets

You can often pick up free sports bets and free casino bets from different bookmakers and there are a couple of differences.

One of the main differences is that your casino free bets will likely be a bit more restricted in where you can use them. The most common one will be free spins on a certain slot game, usually around 100 free spins when you sign up, as opposed to a certain amount of free sports bets to use on any sport.

The other big difference when it comes to cash free bets is that you will usually receive a bigger bonus from a casino. This is because casino games usually have higher stakes, and returns, meaning a £20 free bet wouldn’t get you too far. Most of the biggest casino operators will offer you around £100 in free bets to use on their table games.

Free Betting Offers FAQ’s

Have a question about the best free bet betting sites? Check out our frequently asked questions (FAQ) below where we try and answer the most popular questions about the betting sites offering free bonus bets.

Can You Get No Deposit Free Bets?

Whilst you can pick up No Deposit Free Bets, they are usually pretty rare especially for new customers. Existing customers are more likely to receive free bets with no deposit restrictions as a form of loyalty payment.

What happens if you keep winning bets?

Any successful bettor will tell you of the annoyance of bookmakers restricting them to smaller stakes, or even giving them an outright ban from their sportsbook.  Whilst this is a big gripe with punters, bookmakers have to operate as a business and can’t afford to run a loss over a long period of time.

Do you get your bonus offer back if you win?

In short, no. Once you’ve used your bonus, that’s it. Win or lose, you only get one shot.

Why do bookmakers always win?

Bookmakers are one of the most successful businesses around, and that’s because they always have the edge. Whether that’s on the sportsbook, where they employ dozens of the smartest minds to ensure their prices are on point and can create their own odds, or in the casino where the house is always given the slight edge on games like roulette, the favour will always be on the side of the bookmaker.

What is the most profitable sport to bet on?

In terms of sheer volume, football accounts for the majority of bets and therefore the most profit, but also the most loss.

The most profitable bettors have their own specialised areas though, where they get to know a certain league in depth and can spot where the value lies. This is unlikely to be a major European league, where the odds will be very sharp, but more likely a minor league where the bookmakers may not have as much indepth knowledge.

What is the easiest sport to bet on?

This also comes down to your preference. If you know more about a certain sport then you’ll find it easier to place your bets.  For the betting layman though, football is the most accessible sport to bet on, due to the sheer influence it has and the huge offering by every bookmaker.

Can I withdraw any winnings from my free bets?

The terms and conditions of each free bet welcome bonus will inform new bettors on exactly how winnings can be withdrawn from the sportsbook.

As a general rule, when bettors receive a free bet at a sportsbook, they will find some restrictions enforced on how they are able to use this wager. For example, a £10 free bet may be required to be used in full with a minimum odds of 1.5.

The free bet stake is typically not returned to the bettor with any winnings, although withdrawals can often be made on any returned funds. Wagering requirements on these winnings may apply, although these do tend to be low (1x to 5x).

How can I get free bets without a deposit in UK?

It’s rare that you can find bookmaker offers that don’t require you to make a deposit. In the majority of cases, you will be required to set up an account and deposit money into it in order to place a qualifying bet. Some casino brands may offer a no deposit bonus, but be sure to read the terms and conditions before you utilise any such offer.

What is Arbitrage betting?

Arbitrage betting allows punters to make a profit by betting on conflicting markets when the odds allow for a profit either way. To take an extreme example, if one bookmaker has priced ‘both teams to score’ in a football match at odds of 11/10, and another bookmaker has priced ‘no on both teams to score’ at 11/10, then placing a bet on both of those markets with each bookmaker means that regardless of the score, your bet will be a winner and you will make a profit as your winnings would cover the price of the other bet.

Be wary that these bets often require large stakes in order to make any money as the difference in odds is never likely to be too large. This is similar to ‘matched betting’, where punters use different sign-up bonuses to take advantage of ‘arbing’ opportunities.

How do fixed odds bets work?

Fixed odds mean that the odds on your bet will not fluctuate before the event starts. Often when there is an influx of bets on a particular market, the bookmaker will protect themselves from a huge loss by shortening the odds, but if you take a fixed price bet, then you will receive the odds as they were when you placed the bet.

It helps to know your own preferences when it comes to fractional, decimal and American odds and it’s important to check with your chosen bookmaker whether the odds they offer are fixed or could ‘drift’ and ‘shorten’ depending on the market.

Safety and Responsible Gambling

At Squawka, we take our duty of care to promote responsible gambling very seriously. Gambling should always be seen as a fun event rather than a way to guarantee income or a way to distract yourself from other areas of life.

We all enjoy a punt but if you ever feel that your gambling is becoming an issue then there are plenty of tools out there that can help.

  • Gambling Commission – The Gambling Commission is a UK government run department helping to give you information about gambling and offering support if you need it.
  • Begambleaware – Begambleaware is an independent organisation that offer support and methods of controlling your gambling if you feel it’s become a problem.
  • Gamstop – Gamstop operates as a self exclusion tool, restricting your access to gambling websites as well as offering support and advice on controlling gambling

As well as the above resources, each bookmaker will also offer your gambling controls to limit your spend, or time spent on site, as well as options to have time out from being able to use their site or permanently self exclude yourself from using their services.
