Liverpool vs Ajax: Predictions
Liverpool need just one win to secure their progression to the Champions League knockout rounds from their remaining two Group D matches, but they face a difficult encounter with perennial Eredivisie champions Ajax at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The permutations remain the same for Jurgen Klopp as they were last week when Atalanta came to town, only this time, the pressure has just dialled up a notch. The Italian entertainers ran out comfortable 2-0 winners in the end at Anfield, meaning just two points now separates first from third.
The Reds currently top the group and will feel confident of getting the job done having nicked a 1-0 win in Amsterdam last month, but the Merseysiders are certainly feeling the heat from the congested schedule, with James Milner limping off against Brighton over the weekend and adding to Klopp’s growing casualty list.
Erik ten Hag’s side meanwhile have handled the busy calendar with distinction and are currently perched atop the Eredivisie table with a quite extraordinary plus 37 goal difference. They fired a blank in the reverse fixture, but they themselves will feel they can offer more of a threat against Liverpool’s threadbare defence.

Liverpool vs Ajax: Match Stats
Ajax are currently unbeaten in their last 11 away games in the Champions League, boasting seven wins and four draws in that time. In fact, this is the club’s longest run away from home in the competition since an unbeaten spell between September 1994 and March 1997, which spanned 14 matches.
So, with Klopp having to juggle a growing injury list, progressing through the Champions League group phases, and retaining his Premier League crown, Ajax could capitalise on the club’s current struggles. This could be their best chance to get a result on Merseyside, as Atalanta did so last week.
21 October 2020 – Ajax 0-1 Liverpool – Champions League
14 December 1966 – Liverpool 2-2 Ajax – European Cup
07 Dec 1966 – Ajax 5-1 Liverpool – European Cup
The famous encounter between these two clubs is of course “The Fog Match” in which manager Rinus Michels and playmaker grandmaster Johan Cruyff run amok in a 5-1 win. More recently, though, Liverpool professionally edged the 1-0 meeting in this group last month.
