Pep eyes the double as Manchester United look for revenge

For the first time in the FA Cup’s history, the same two English sides will contest the final in back-to-back seasons.

City got the best of their rivals in 2022/23 after İlkay Gündoğan scored twice on the way to their famous treble. One year later, Gündoğan has gone, but City are once again on the hunt for another trophy as they look to complete the double. The Citizens secured their record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title with a 3-1 victory over West Ham at the weekend and are now looking to win the FA Cup in back-to-back seasons for the first time in their history.

Pep’s side have been nearly unstoppable, going unbeaten in their last 35 matches across all competitions, with 29 wins, the longest run by an English side in the Premier League era. They took the record from their rivals and opponents, Manchester United, and will be hopeful of extending it at Wembley.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, know that winning the FA Cup is their only way of securing European football for next season. Despite beating Brighton on the final day, they finished eighth. This was their worst-ever finish in a Premier League campaign and the first time they had ever ended a season in the competition with a negative goal difference (-1), with Erik ten Hag’s future in serious doubt.

However, this is a Manchester derby, and anything can happen, just like in United’s last two rounds in the competition.

In the quarter-finals, they came back not once but twice against Liverpool at Old Trafford. They equalised in the 87th minute to send it to extra time before cancelling out Liverpool’s third goal again. Sub Amad Diallo then popped up in stoppage time to score a famous winner before being sent off for his celebration.

However, this was the complete opposite in their semi-final clash against Coventry when they scraped by on penalties after throwing away a three-goal lead to the Championship side despite leading 3-0 in the 70th minute. They were almost embarrassed to celebrate their spot-kick triumph, but it now means the red side of Manchester have reached more FA Cup finals than any other side in the competition’s history.
