Anthony EadsonOur headline scoreline for a comfortable opening-night win.
Anthony EadsonExtra threat who knows exactly what this division demands.
Anthony EadsonA controlled home win rather than a shootout is the likeliest script.
Anthony EadsonOnly two players in the entire Premier League were shown more yellow cards than Yerson Mosquera last season. In total, the Wolves man picked up a whopping 11 cautions in just 27 appearances. A loose cannon at times, Mosquera makes appeal to be carded in the season opener at around 3/1.
Anthony EadsonRelegated they may be, but Wolves retain a strong squad that should be too strong for this Blackburn side that finished 20th and scored only 42 league goals last season. Rovers have failed to invest again this summer and with a significant gap in quality between the pair, we are happy to put up -1 Wolves handicap, meaning this bet will be a winner should the hosts win by two or more goals.
Andy FrancisPreston to win and over 1.5 match goals is a value-led rather than a low-risk play at Bolton. North End are clear away outsiders so a Preston victory sees reasonable value. The goals leg is deliberately conservative: it needs only two goals, while the 2.5-goal line is close to even money. Preston’s sold-out allocation, with more than 4,400 travelling supporters expected, should help create a committed away performance . However, it is Bolton’s home match and the Championship opener, so neither side has current league form. Stake modestly and treat the selection as a calculated risk.
Andy FrancisThis is a high-variance, price-dependent punt rather than a strong standalone play. Preston have scored in four of their last five outings, so an early away goal is plausible, while Bolton failed to score in two of their most recent five matches. However, the clean-sheet leg is demanding: Bolton scored 70 goals in 2025/26, averaging 1.52 per game, and recorded a 13-8-2 home league record. Bolton also beat Preston 2-0 at this ground in last summer’s friendly. With the hosts favoured in the win market, only take Preston to lead at half-time and Bolton to score zero if the price represents real value for the low likelihood of that exact scenario.
Andy FrancisMillwall to win, with Joshua Coburn and Femi Azeez each registering one or more shots on target, is a logical attacking angle at Bristol City. The Lions challenged for automatic promotion last season and their projected 4-2-3-1 again places Coburn at centre-forward and Azeez on the right. Coburn recorded 19 Championship shots on target, or 0.88 per 90, and scored eight of his nine league goals away from home. Azeez registered 32 shots on target at 0.96 per 90, alongside 11 league goals. Both started the recent cup tie at QPR, where Azeez tested the goalkeeper. With Millwall’s main finisher and widest direct attacker likely to start, the shot legs fit a positive away-win case.
Andy FrancisBacking Caleb Taylor, Casper De Norre and Cameron Pring all to be booked is a selective cards angle built around their expected roles. Pring is the standout leg: he collected seven Championship yellows in 25 appearances last season, or 0.41 cards per 90, and his full-back role should bring defensive contact with Millwall’s wide attack. De Norre adds a central-midfield route, making 1.84 tackles and 1.27 interceptions per 90 alongside five league cautions. Taylor is the longer-price component, projected to start at centre-back against Bristol City’s likely two-forward line. All three are expected starters, giving the bet a clear minutes pathway in a competitive opening-day contest.
Andy FrancisMo Touré and Jovon Makama to both score is a plausible high-price attacking angle if Norwich field both against West Brom. Touré made an electric competitive start, scoring after 40 seconds and assisting Norwich’s second goal in the 4-1 cup win over MK Dons. He is projected to lead Norwich’s line again at Carrow Road . A fit Makama would give Philippe Clement another direct finishing threat alongside Touré, creating two routes to goal rather than relying on one scorer. The case is team-news dependent: Makama missed the cup match with a contact injury and does not appear in current projected XIs. Confirm his selection before considering the market.
Andy FrancisOver 11.5 corners has a strong head-to-head case because the two most recent meetings produced 12 and 15 corners. At Carrow Road in February, Norwich won 12 corners themselves against West Brom after mounting sustained pressure through 21 shots. January’s league fixture also cleared the line, with West Brom winning ten corners despite a 5-0 defeat. Norwich again have home advantage, while both teams begin their league campaign after 4-1 cup wins. That combination of a repeatable head-to-head pattern, Norwich’s attacking pressure at Carrow Road and West Brom’s ability to generate corners when chasing makes the route to 12 corners credible.
Andy FrancisFreddie Draper and Luke Ayling to both be booked is a role-based cards angle. Draper took six League One yellows last season and committed 2.65 fouls per 90, placing him in the top percentile for forwards. Projected to lead Lincoln’s line at the Riverside, his pressing and physical duel work provide a route to a tactical booking. Ayling has an established Championship card profile from right-back, recording ten yellows in 46 games alongside 2.18 tackles per 90. Both are projected starters, giving the selection a clear minutes pathway in a competitive fixture where promoted Lincoln will need to disrupt Middlesbrough’s rhythm.
Andy FrancisMorgan Whittaker to score two or more is a high-price play with a strong home-scoring case. Boro’s top scorer last season hit 14 Championship goals, ten at the Riverside, producing 0.62 home goals per 90. His underlying numbers are equally strong: 0.51 expected goals per 90, in the 97th percentile, 3.39 shots per 90, in the 99th, and two multi-goal league games. He is projected to start in Boro’s attack against newly promoted Lincoln and is viewed locally as nailed-on. If Middlesbrough establish early control, Whittaker’s high shot volume and home record give him a credible route from one goal to two.
Andy FrancisRichard Kone to score or assist is a strong QPR player angle because the forward enters the Portsmouth trip as the side’s clearest proven finisher. He is listed on ten goals and a team-leading 29 shots on target in the pre-match data, underlining both his end product and regular presence in dangerous areas. That makes the selection more flexible than a goalscorer-only bet: Kone can land it through his own finishing or a decisive final ball. With QPR expected to carry a threat at Fratton Park, he has a credible involvement route.
Andy FrancisA draw between Portsmouth and QPR is a strong opening-day value angle because this is a notably even fixture. Their last nine meetings are perfectly balanced at three Portsmouth wins, three draws and three QPR wins, with their last league game at Fratton park finishing 1-1 in December. Pompey are unbeaten in their three most recent home matches, but QPR are priced as live opponents rather than clear outsiders, leaving little between the sides. Portsmouth’s structured, slower-tempo approach should help keep the contest competitive, while the opening-week context gives neither team much incentive to overcommit.
Andy FrancisUnder 1.5 goals is a plausible value angle if you expect Stoke’s home edge to produce a controlled, narrow contest. The Potters averaged only 1.1 Championship goals per game last season, while 57 per cent of their league fixtures finished under 2.5 goals. Swansea’s first competitive outing of 2026/27 was a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham, suggesting their attacking rhythm is still developing. With the campaign only beginning, both sides may favour structure over early risk. A 1-0 Stoke win fits the home selection perfectly and is all this market requires. It is a more selective goals play, but the price compensates for the narrow scoreline needed.
Andy FrancisStoke to beat Swansea makes sense as a home-led opening-day bet, albeit not one to overstate. The Potters return to the bet365 Stadium after a 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Oldham, a performance that supplied an early clean sheet and a useful confidence boost. Swansea’s preparation ended with a 1-0 home defeat to Birmingham, leaving them to travel to Staffordshire seeking an immediate response. The market also slightly favours Stoke and that combination of venue, positive recent result and a modest market edge makes Stoke the logical lean.
Andy FrancisOver 2.5 goals with Derby to win by exactly one has a clear 2-1 pathway. That exact combination landed at The Valley in January, when Derby led 2-0 before Charlton replied. Charlton began the new campaign by scoring three first-half goals in a 3-1 win at Cheltenham. Derby averaged 1.6 away goals last season but conceded 1.39 on the road , supporting goals at both ends and a narrow margin.
Andy FrancisCarlton Morris over 3.5 shots is a higher-volume play with a clear route through Derby’s central striker. Morris confirmed his fitness by completing the cup tie against Lincoln and registered three attempts, including two from central positions, one blocked and one narrowly wide. He needs only one more attempt to cover this line. Last season, he was Derby’s leading Championship scorer with 12 goals, producing 0.51 goals and 0.47 expected goals per 90. Those numbers reflect a forward who consistently works into valuable shooting areas. Morris is expected to continue as Derby’s focal point at Charlton, and a competitive away game should keep him involved in the final third throughout.

In-Play football tips
In-Play betting has become a phenomenon in recent years and given the popularity that it had with punters when it was first rolled out among apps and online football betting sites (having long been an option via telephone), it’s unsurprising to see that almost every firm now has In-Play functionality within their sportsbook offerings.
This type of wagering allows you to decide upon your bets dependent on the unfolding action, whether that’s a cup final between two European giants or a tussle at the bottom of the table in one of the lower leagues. For our tips, it’s difficult to post them on site due to the timing of matches, but you can follow us on Twitter for the best live tweets, stats, reactions and most importantly In-Play tips as the fixtures unfold.
Full-time results
The most popular bet in any league and with any sportsbook is betting on the full-time result. This is as simple as betting on which team you expect to win the game – or indeed on the draw if that’s the final outcome of the game that you’re expecting.
These are the bets we mostly tend to use in our accumulators too, combining four or more of our full-time result betting tips for bigger returns.
Correct score
Of course, you don’t just have to bet on the outcome of a particular game (results wise that is), you can also have a punt on the exact scoreline. From a 6-0 drubbing to a goalless stalemate, the option’s yours if you fancy your chances at predicting the correct score.
Both Teams to Score
Both teams to score bets are almost as popular as full-time result bets nowadays, given that it is a very simple market to bet on with shorter odds and thus they also prove particularly popular with accumulators and multiple backers.
You’re simply betting on both teams to find the net over the course of the 90 minutes with this bet and that can prove to be more of a popular bet than a match result bet as the hopes of it being successful can remain alive until the final kick of the match.
Over/Under Goals Bets
The over/under goals betting market allows punters to bet on whether both teams will score more or less of a specified number of goals in a game. The market is in intervals of 0.5 to ensure all bets are settled.
Example: The 2.5 goals margin is the most popular specified number of goals in this market. If both teams score a total of 2 goals or less the bet is lost. If both teams score a total of 3 goals or more, the bet is settled as a win.
Bookings
That Over/Under style of betting (as mentioned above) is worth remembering, as it is also the way that many other markets are offered including a number of total bookings in a match – be that in total or on a specific team. Everton have the most bookings in the Premier League this season for example (64), so you could bet on them to receive over a certain number of cards in a specific match, if you are so inclined.
There are other markets when it comes to betting on bookings in a game too and you can bet on which side will receive the most bookings, if there will be a red card in the match and with some bookmakers you can even bet on specific players to be shown a card during the match. Step forward Ashley Young, who is the current Premier League player with the highest amount of cards in their career so far with 79 to his name. You can find these kinds of odds on bookmakers such as Ladbrokes and Sky Bet.
Corners Taken
You can also bet on Under/Over markets in corners in 2022/2023 and also on the ‘Corners Match Result’ market, where you bet on one team to win more corners than the other during the match. Newcastle United topped the charts in the Premier League in 2022/23, whilst Bayern Munich were the team to watch in these markets over in the Bundesliga.
Goalscorer
There are plenty of ‘goalscorer‘ markets also available if you fancy a particular team or player to net that day. For player-specific odds, most bookmakers offer a ‘first goalscorer’, ‘anytime goalscorer’ or ‘last goalscorer’ market, which could be particularly useful if a player is facing a certain club. Harry Kane has scored 20 goals in 20 games against Leicester City during his career, so you may fancy his chances against The Foxes. Didier Drogba was also famously clinical against Arsenal, while Wayne Rooney loved playing against West Ham.
Evaluating Key Factors in Football Matches – Tips From Squawka Experts
Home advantage
There are so many factors to consider when placing a football bet, but one of the most important ones is ‘home advantage’. Clubs tend to perform better on familiar soil, just look at Liverpool‘s incredible run of 68 games unbeaten in the Premier League between 2017 and 2021. So before placing a bet, just be mindful of which club is at home, and whether the visiting team has a particularly good record on the road.
Head-to-head record
Another point to remember is head-to-head records between clubs. Some teams just have ill-luck and misfortune against other teams, for whatever reason, be it tactical, psychological or Lady Luck just doesn’t fancy them. West Ham, for example, are winless against Brighton since The Seagulls returned to the Premier League in 2017. That’s a staggering 12 games! Now that’s a bogey team and a half.
Team form
Football has always been a confidence sport, and when the chips are really down, clubs have a tendency to tailspin. So, it’s always worth checking the form of clubs heading into important match-ups. The league table can be deceptive at times. If a club had a particularly poor start to the season, but have won five on the trot under a new manager, the table may not reflect that upturn in fortune just yet. So always consider the last five games as a standard measuring yard.
Team news & injuries
Some players really do just make all the difference. It is always within your interest to check the team news before placing a bet. Some managers are coy in press conferences and bookies may not always be so quick to read between the lines, so make sure your injury information is up to date and from a reliable source. Clubs like Crystal Palace and Tottenham tend to perform way below their usual standards without Jean-Philippe Mateta and James Maddison respectively, so make sure the key men are fit, and if not, you may fancy the other team.
Unfamiliar leagues
Before placing a bet, you need to consider whether you’re actually familiar with what you’re betting on. It’s all well and good predicting PSG to ‘win to nil’ against Lens back in January, but you may have reconsidered that particular bet if you knew how good The Blood and Gold have been this season. Lens went on to win 3-1 in that Ligue 1 match, and it wasn’t as great a shock as many would have thought before the season. So, understand the league you’re betting on for the greatest chance of success.
Overvaluing favourites
The above pitfall falls into this category as well. Odds for ‘favourites’ will naturally be shorter, but we don’t exactly have ‘Invincible’ clubs (those who go unbeaten across the entire season) popping up every year. Defeats are a natural part of the sport, so never overvalue a favourite, even PSG or Man City.
What Is a Bet Builder?
Bet Builders are a fairly recent but very popular phenomenon where some bookmakers allow you the chance to customise your own bet slips on specific matches. In essence, they give punters the chance to create their own accumulators within a single match while using a variety of markets. Punters can personalise their bet slips by picking a number of selections on a specific event, with the odds then getting boosted by every addition. Betfair have a particularly good ‘Bet Builder’ option, where you can select any number of the markets we mentioned in the ‘How to bet on football’ section of this page, and create your own customisable accumulator. You could select the ‘correct score’, ‘first goalscorer’, ‘over x bookings’, ‘under x goals’ and ‘BTTS’ if you so fancy on a single game.
Weekend football tips & predictions – Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Although this season in particular there are more midweek matches than ever with domestic leagues looking to squeeze the fixtures in and the usual Champions League and Europa League tournaments to complete, the weekend is when the football schedule really comes alive and as always, we have you covered here at Squawka Bet.
Whether you’re looking for a tip on every match from each of the top leagues in Europe and the UK, an accumulator bet across a few different matches or our hand-picked tips from the biggest games in the Premier League and beyond, we’ve got your back with a range of different betting selections across every weekend.
Football betting odds
For the betting novices amongst you, the odds represent the price available on a bet, giving you the chance to work out how much your bet will return depending on your stake.
There are different types of odds available, but the ones that you will find on this site due to us being based in the UK are fractional odds. The chances of your bet coming in are calculated by these odds, with the number on the first side of the fraction being the returns you receive per bet. As such, odds of 10/1 would see £110 returned for every £10 staked – plus your £10 stake, meaning a total of £110 comes back to you.
The other two most popular forms of odds are American and Decimal and with most bookmakers you are able to select the odds to the style you find easiest to understand and operate with.
Football price boosts and enhanced odds
Most bookmakers will offer weekly or even daily price boosts, giving punters the chance to get even larger returns than the original odds on their bets. We’ll try to keep you up to date with those too when some come along that take our fancy. These go hand-in-hand with the options that plenty of bookmakers now have for customers to build and request their own bets combining different selections from the same games.
You will also find plenty of new customer offers and enhanced odds on this site. These can offer massively enhanced odds with smaller limits on stakes, but they can often be a great way to get your account up and running and some bookmakers will offer the chance to get free bets on eight different fixtures for example over the course of the weekend as a bonus upon opening your account, so keep checking back!
Finding Value in Football Betting
With data and statistics becoming such a big part of the modern game, it can be a tad overwhelming knowing which markets to bet on — and where the best value is. That’s why it’s always important to compare odds among different bookmakers, particularly for the more niche markets, such as corners, cards and so on. Our experts find some of the best football tips here, regularly comparing odds across bookies, but there is no harm in exploring the market yourself. To maximise your football betting predictions, we recommend for you to see what other offers are on the market. If you’re unsure about certain bookmakers, we have an up-to-date list here of the best ones in the UK, including their welcome offers for new customers.
