Argentina have advanced to the quarter final of the 2026 World Cup after beating Egypt but they didn’t have it all their own way.
It was a near-perfect group stage for the reigning contenders, who not only topped Group J but did so while conceding just once across their three matches. With momentum firmly on their side, Argentina entered into their Round of 32 match with Cape Verde but they were taken all the way by the tiny island nation, with Argentina needing extra time to overcome their much smaller opponents by an eventual 3-2 scoreline.
They survived another scare in the round of 16 and needed to come from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 with a dramatic comeback to set up a quarter final match against either Colombia or Switzerland.
Argentina odds to win the World Cup
Despite their less than convincing performances against both Cape Verde and Egypt, Argentina remain at around 9/2 to retain their trophy – as they did at the end of the group stages.
It’s no surprise they hold such favouritism, containing one of the most influential players at the tournament in Lionel Messi, along with their comfortable progression to the knockout stages where a favourable opponent has also emerged.
Argentina World Cup Top Goalscorer Odds
You won’t be surprised to hear that Lionel Messi is considered to be Argentina’s most likely candidate to lift the Golden Boot at this summer’s World Cup and indeed he’s now as short as 11/10 to lift that individual gong after reaching eight goals in the tournament – one more than Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
