West Brom will have been disappointed in their 10th-placed finish last season as they sought an immediate return to the Premier League and their second attempt isn’t going much better. Although we are only eight games into the new season, West Brom are already fighting an uphill battle to join the promotion race with their strange start.
The Baggies have lost just one of their eight games so far this season, beaten 2-1 by Blackburn last month when Rovers were flying high, and they bounced back shortly after by beating Hull City 5-2 – when the Tigers were second. But the win and defeat have been joined by a massive six draws in the Championship, naturally more than any other club in the division.
Things haven’t been much better for Birmingham, who have been closer to League One than they have the Premier League in the past 10 seasons. The Blues have won more games than West Brom this season, claiming two victories against Huddersfield and Preston but those victories have been joined by four defeats and two draws.
Birmingham’s win over Preston last time out did lift them out of the relegation zone and ended a five-game winless streak including three-straight defeats, while also securing their second clean sheet of the campaign. But now they will be looking to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time since November 2021.

West Brom vs Birmingham match stats
Birmingham have not been an exciting side to watch in front of goal this season, with just five goals in their eight Championship matches. Only Cardiff City (four) in the relegation zone have scored fewer goals than the Blues.
However, there is every chance that they could take the lead, as West Brom like to give their opponents a head start. The Baggies have come from behind to draw five times already in the Championship this season.
