West Ham have taken just four points from their last four games but still find themselves in fifth spot and in the hunt for the Champions League. They sit in fifth on 41 points just two behind Man United in fourth and still have most of their top four rivals to play. They needed a Craig Dawson header to rescue a point against Leicester last time out in an entertaining game that ended 2-2. In just one of their last eight have they failed to find the back of the net.
At their own ground, the Hammers have had a mixed run of late with two victories and two defeats in their last four. Their victories came against Watford and Norwich and their defeats to Leeds and Southampton. Jarrod Bowen enjoys a home game with four from the last three in front of his own fans. Five of the last seven at this ground have seen both teams find the back of the net.
Newcastle made it three straight victories and five undefeated last time out when they defeated Aston Villa 1-0. 11 points from their last five has put them in 17th and put four points between them and the side in 18th (Norwich). They will have to do without influential full-back Kieran Trippier who is expected to miss the next few months with a broken foot. The North-Eastern side are five unbeaten and have seen both teams score in three of their last five.
Away from home, the Magpies won their last road trip coming out on top 1-0 away to Leeds thanks to a Jonjo Shelvey strike. It was only their first road success of the season and only their fourth one not to end in defeat. Jonjo Shelvey has managed to net in each of the last two road games. Just one of their last 15 away games involving Newcastle have gone under 1.5 goals.
West Ham vs Newcastle: Match Stats
West Ham are flying high but they are starting to show signs of having such a small squad and recent home slips to Leeds and Southampton show they are vulnerable. Newcastle are now five unbeaten and after their last game Eddie Howe talked of the confidence and belief running through his team. The visitors look too big to get something from this fixture and can be backed alongside the draw in the double chance market.
Jonjo Shelvey is not a prolific scorer but he has two in his last two on the road and will fancy his chances here. West Ham have kept just two clean sheets in nine (and these came against Norwich and Watford) and Newcastle look capable of scoring. If the Hammers have a defensive weakness it is runners from midfield so back the Magpies midfielder to score at any time.
