Newcastle fans who had been hoping the takeover that occurred at St James’ Park earlier this season would kickstart the team into some improved form have been left disappointed. As things stand, the Magpies sit in 19th place on 10 points, three away from 17th placed Watford having played two games more than the Hornets.
Boss Eddie Howe will surely have money to spend on improving his squad in January, but either way the results need to improve quickly. His side come into this fixture on the back of three consecutive defeats in which they have conceded a total of 11 goals with just one scored in reply.
It would be fair to say that Manchester United’s form has improved under first Michael Carrick and then Ralf Rangnick since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure from the club. Since the Norwegian was sacked, United have gone six games without tasting defeat, progressing in the Champions League and rising to sixth in the league table.
Rangnick’s first two league matches in charge have both yielded one goal victories, firstly at home to Crystal Palace and then last time out away to bottom club Norwich City. It’s been effective if not particularly attractive so far under the German – will that trend continue on Tyneside?
Newcastle vs Man Utd: Match Stats
Cristiano Ronaldo has been in typically deadly form in front of goal this season, scoring 13 times so far in all competitions. His first two back at Manchester United came in the reverse of this fixture against Newcastle and he netted the only goal of the game in the Red Devils’ last match at Norwich City.
Eddie Howe’s men are struggling for goals at the moment, but United haven’t exactly been creating tonnes of chances under Ralf Rangnick as yet. They’ve won their first two games under him by a 1-0 scoreline and it’s likely to be another low-scoring victory here.

6 October 2019 – Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd- Premier League
We correctly predicted a 4-1 win for Manchester United when these two sides last met and indeed, that has been the result now in three of the last four meetings between the clubs. That Red Devils victory marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s second debut for the club, during which he found the net twice.
