The 2022/23 Champions League has gone the way many Manchester City fans would have expected, with Pep Guardiola’s side currently unbeaten after four games and leading the Group E charge. It was a frustrating away day for Guardiola last time out, as his side were held to a goalless stalemate in Denmark to Copenhagen. Erling Haaland was kept on ice to manage his minutes, and the travelling Mancunians struggled to find the final-third rhythm needed to penetrate the Danish club without him. Sergio Gomez’s first-half red card certainly didn’t help the cause.
Dortmund, likewise, will be looking for a response after managing only a 1-1 draw at the Westfalenstadion last time out against Sevilla. Terzic perhaps thought he secured that same scoreline at the Etihad last month, but former forward Haaland struck in the dying embers with a sinew-stretching strike to make it 2-1.

This match could very well hinge on the midfield battle, and who comes out on top. Jude Bellingham and Rodri will be key to their respective clubs and who can control the centre circle. So far, Bellingham has scored in every Champions League match for Dortmund, netting four times in four matches, including the 2-1 defeat at the Etihad last month. He also has the most tackles (eight) of any midfielder between these two clubs, ahead of Rodri, who has registered six tackles.
Other than the usual attacking suspects, Joao Cancelo has actually been one of Guardiola’s most potent forces going forward. No full back has been involved in more sequences of play that have ended in shots (29) or goals (five) than the Portuguese in the Champions League this term. He also has three assists, equalling his season-best tally in a Champions League campaign (2021/22).
