After a disastrous campaign under Andrea Pirlo last time out, Juventus haven’t exactly enjoyed the perfect start to the new season in Serie A under the returning Massimiliano Allegri. With six games played, the Old Lady sit squarely in mid-table with two wins, two draws and two defeats to their name.
With the likes of Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala missing in this game, Allegri will need to find a way to prevent the reigning Champions League winners Chelsea from dominating possession at the Allianz Stadium, but they did get off to a fine start in the UCL earlier this month with a 3-0 win over Swedish outfit Malmo.
Chelsea themselves also got their European campaign off to a victorious start, with Romelu Lukaku’s 69th minute goal handing them all three points against Zenit St Petersburg at Stamford Bridge. They’d also been enjoying a strong start to the Premier League season until this weekend just gone.
Having won four of their opening five matches and having held Liverpool to a draw at Anfield with only 10 men for more than 45 minutes, the Blues were starting to look like title favourites until this weekend’s 0-1 home loss to Manchester City. Can they bounce back in the best possible fashion with an away win in Europe tonight?
Juventus vs Chelsea: Match Stats
Chelsea have been slow starters of late and have failed to score in the first half in each of their last four games in all competitions. Juventus, meanwhile, have failed to score in the first-half only once in Serie A this season, so although we fancy the Blues’ quality to shine through against a weakened Bianconeri, we do expect the hosts to start well.
Unusually for an attacker, Federico Chiesa leads the way in tackles for Juventus this season, having made 14 in Serie A thus far – four more than any other player. The hard-working Italian will have to track back against Chelsea’s marauding full-backs and win more tackles for his team in this fixture.
25 February 2009 – Chelsea 1-0 Juventus – UEFA Champions League
10 March 2009 – Juventus 2-2 Chelsea – UEFA Champions League
19 September 2012 – Chelsea 2-2 Juventus – UEFA Champions League
20 November 2012 – Juventus 0-3 Chelsea – UEFA Champions League
This will be the fifth meeting between these two clubs in the Champions League, with either side having one victory to their name thus far. The more recent clash came in 2012, where the Italian side ran out 3-0 winners with Fabio Quagliarella, Arturo Vidal and Sebastian Giovinco on the scoresheet.
