Fulham’s quest to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking is looking pretty good. Marco Silva’s side are currently nine points clear at the top of the Championship and even though they have played two more games than second-placed Bournemouth, all the momentum and control is in Fulham’s hands.
After enduring a tough period to end 2021, going five games without a victory, Fulham have stepped up to secure eight victories from their past 10 Championship matches. There have been a variety of wins too, from a 7-0 thrashing of Reading and back-to-back 6-2s against Bristol City and Birmingham, to slender 1-0 wins over Hull and Cardiff. But Fulham aren’t indestructible as Huddersfield showed just a few weeks ago, leaving Craven Cottage with a 2-1 win.
Blackburn will be looking to emulate Huddersfield’s result to keep their own promotion hopes alive. Rovers have been impressive this season under Tony Mowbray and are closer to a Premier League return than they have ever been since dropping out of the top flight, but they have been going through a rough patch.
The 1-0 victory over QPR at the weekend ended a five-game winless run for Blackburn that had seen them slip from second to fifth, dropping away from the fight for automatic promotion. Instead, Blackburn now find themselves at the heart of a heated battle for the play-offs, currently fourth and only four points clear of seventh-placed Sheffield United who do have a game in hand on Rovers. Blackburn will hate the sight of Fulham right now, with the Cottagers unbeaten in their past five meetings, including four victories and a 7-0 thrashing in November.
