Sunderland vs Newcastle FA Cup predictions: Tips, odds and team news
Sunderland host Newcastle United in a highly anticipated FA Cup Tyne-Weir Derby on Saturday at 12:30pm (UK time).
Sunderland vs Newcastle odds
FA Cup third-round ties don’t get much bigger than this. It was like Christmas had come early when Newcastle were drawn out of the hat to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, ending an almost-eight-year wait for a Tyne-Weir Derby. The main reason for the wait is the fact that Sunderland dropped from the Premier League to League One, before finding their way back to the Championship, while Newcastle have stayed in the top flight and even tackled Europe the season.
So, Newcastle are an even bigger scalp now than they have been for a long time for Sunderland. The Magpies have been stuttering in the Premier League and may need the FA Cup to secure European football for next season, having been knocked out of the Champions League and EFL Cup. But they haven’t won the FA Cup since 1954/55 and were knocked out in the third round in each of the past three seasons, against lower-league opposition in the last two. Sunderland, meanwhile, have two FA Cup successes to their name, the last of which came in 1972/93, and made it to the fourth round last season after three straight first-round exits.
You would have to go back to March 2016 for the last time these two met, playing out a 1-1 draw at St.James’ Park thanks to goals from Jermain Defoe and Aleksandar Mitrovic. Sunderland are actually unbeaten in the previous nine meetings with Newcastle, winning six of the last seven games between the two sides, with the Toon Army’s last victory coming in August 2011.

Sunderland vs Newcastle match tip
Double Chance: Sunderland/Draw @ 11/10 with Sky Bet
Newcastle are winless in their last nine games against Sunderland, but you can’t really regard that when predicting this match, as a lot has changed since then. However, you can look at Newcastle’s performances in the FA Cup in the past two seasons. In 2021/22, just after the takeover and Eddie Howe’s arrival, Newcastle were beaten in the FA Cup third round 1-0 by third-tier Cambridge United, a team they will have expected to beat even with a weakened XI. Then, a year later, Sheffield Wednesday knocked Newcastle out of the third round with a 2-1 victory, also plying their trade in League One.
