Newcastle vs Brentford prediction, stats, tips & team news
Newcastle vs Brentford
Newcastle United and Brentford will both be looking to take a step closer to Wembley when they face off at St James’ Park in the EFL Cup on Wednesday 18th December at 8pm. Brentford will be feeling the more positive having beat Newcastle in their Premier League meeting in December. This game will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports+.
Kevin Schade 1+ Shot on Target (6/4 with Betway)
Both teams are expected to make wholesale changes for this League Cup clash, but Kevin Schade is one player I expect to start from the off. The German has mostly been used as a substitute in the Premier League but does have four goals in the top flight from just 678 minutes of football.
One of those four goals came at the start of December against Newcastle when The Bees beat Newcastle 4-2 at the Community Stadium. Schade has recorded four shots on target across his last League Cup appearances, with three against Sheffield Wednesday and one against Leyton Orient.
There is on denying that Brentford’s away-form is in stark contrast to their sensational home record however, at 6/4 in what could be an open high-scoring game, Schade looks a cracking price. Most other bookmakers go odds-on that he records at least one shot on target on Wednesday, so take the generous offering from Betway.
Brentford to Win & Both Teams to Score (7/1 with Betway)
As mentioned above, Brentford’s home and away records this season are poles apart. Thomas Frank’s side have the best home record in the Premier League (W7 D1 L0), while away from the Community Stadium they have the second-worst record in the division (W0 D1 L7).
That may make you question why I’m putting up Brentford to win and both teams to score, but I feel that elusive away win is just around the corner. All of Brentford’s seven league wins this season have featured both teams scoring, and looking back further that run stretches to nine when you include last season.
Brentford’s games have been particularly high-scoring of late with 18 in their last four. Newcastle have only won one of their last five, and with Brentford having their number at the start of the month, I think they can outperform their odds here.

How both teams go into Newcastle vs Brentford
The EFL Cup is an all-Premier League affair at the quarter-final stage. But both Newcastle and Brentford will be optimistic about their chances of making the final at Wembley. Newcastle have already knocked out two Premier League sides en route to the quarter-finals this season. In the second round, they beat Nottingham Forest on penalties, before knocking Chelsea out in the fourth round. Sandwiched in between was a narrow 1-0 win over League Two side AFC Wimbledon.
For Brentford, this will be a first game against Premier League opposition in the EFL Cup this season. They’ll be hoping for a win to secure just a second EFL Cup semi-final appearance in the club’s history. The Bees started this year’s competition with a narrow 1-0 win over League Two side Colchester United. They then beat Leyton Orient of League One 3-1, before seeing off Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on penalties.
Newcastle team news
Sven Botman, Emil Krafth, Nick Pope and Jamaal Lascelles are all out until the new year for Newcastle. Joelinton is available after a suspension, while Callum Wilson is out with a thigh issue.
Brentford team news
Josh Dasilva, Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey are confined absentees. Mathias Jensen is nearing a return but is a couple of weeks away from match fitness.
Newcastle vs Brentford head-to-head
Brentford’s 4-2 win in the Premier League ended a five-game winning streak for Newcastle in this fixture. It was also just Brentford’s fifth win against Newcastle in history (19 games).
