Manchester City vs Sevilla preview

This will be Manchester City’s first appearance in UEFA’s curtain-raiser. Pep Guardiola, though, has been here before. He’s a three-time winner having lifted the Super Cup in 2009 and 2011 with Barcelona before claiming the 2013 trophy as Bayern Munich’s boss. England is the joint second most successful nation with nine UEFA Super Cups between five clubs (Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa).

However, it’s Spain who rules the roost with 16 titles shared among five clubs, but despite previously appearing in six finals Sevilla has returned home with one success. That came all the way back in 2006 when Juande Ramos’ side outlasted Frank Rijkaard’s Barcelona 3-0 at Stade Louis II in Monaco. Milan, Real Madrid (twice) Barça and Bayern would get the better of Sevilla in the following years.

To date, the Europa League has won this game eight times in 23 attempts. Atlético Madrid in 2018 was the last such team. In fact, across the last 10 editions, Diego Simeone’s side was the exception to complete Champions League dominance.

Manchester City vs Sevilla team news

Kevin De Bruyne was absent through Manchester City’s pre-season preparations but made his return in their Community Shield clash with Arsenal and should feature here. New signing Mateo Kovacic has settled into Pep Guardiola’s plans and compatriot Josko Gvardiol should have made his debut for the European champions before they kick-off against Sevilla.

So far Karim Rekik and U21 right-back José Carmona are Sevilla’s only departures this summer. Both followed the influential sporting director Monchi out of the club who since linked up with former Sevilla head coach Unai Emery at Aston Villa. Djibril Sow, Rony Lopes and Adrià Pedrosa have since joined though it remains to be seen if they’re regular first-team players under José Luis Mendilibar.
