Guardiola promises Man City will ‘go for it’ in second leg vs Real Madrid

All four Champions League quarter-final first legs were incredibly entertaining affairs and that was followed up by Tuesday’s second legs between Barcelona and PSG, and Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid. Manchester City vs Real Madrid is the blockbuster tie of this round, however, and after last week’s opening 3-3 draw at the Bernabeu, the second leg has a lot to live up to.

City boss Pep Guardiola has promised his side will ‘go for it’ in search of yet another Champions League semi-final, using the home crowd to take the game to Real Madrid, rather than sitting back and hoping to pick off the La Liga leaders.

“With our people, we feel safe, we feel protected, we feel supported,” Guardiola told reporters. “We know we can handle momentum. We are going for it. We have a gameplan we believe in, and we are going for it.

“If we lose, we lose. We shake hands – Real Madrid will deserve it. I want us to play and deserve to be in the semi-finals.”

Of course, Man City have scored 16 goals in their last four games alone. ‘Going for it’ is just simply what they do. But Guardiola still admits that a special performance will be needed to beat a team like Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid.

“We need to be who we are. Always in the last years, we have been, and I have the feeling we are ready to perform well. If you don’t, you will not beat teams like Real Madrid,” he continued. “Real Madrid know us, we know them. Carlos made some surprises in the first game. We need the right mentality, be ready to suffer, always we had momentum. In that way always we can do it.”

Guardiola added: “We have to give them credit – Real Madrid are not just any opponent. We have to impose our way of playing as much as possible, but it is not possible to do that over 90 minutes.”
