How both teams go into Arsenal vs Leicester
After falling short in their previous two Premier League campaigns, there was optimism regarding the Gunners heading into the season. Mikel Arteta’s men are holding up their end of the bargain, having secured three wins from their opening five contests. The only blemishes were a 1-1 draw at home against Brighton, which saw Declan Rice sent off, meaning the England international missed the North London derby after the September break, and a 2-2 draw last time out at Manchester City, again finishing the game with 10 men as Leandro Trossard was dismissed this time.
However, without Rice and skipper Martin Ødegaard, the 13-time English champions emerged as 1-0 winners against their bitter rivals and, in doing so, won a third successive league game on Spurs’ home ground, something the club hadn’t managed in over three decades. They head into this contest having won 16 of their last 17 Premier League games against promoted sides, with the exception being a 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest in May 2023. At home, the Gunners are unbeaten in 39 such games (W34 D5) since a 1-0 loss to Newcastle in November 2010.
Life back in the big time hasn’t gone the way Leicester City, who made an immediate return following their demotion two seasons ago, would have wanted, with Steve Cooper’s side failing to win any of their opening five matches. A hard-fought draw against Spurs at home was followed by successive defeats against Fulham and Aston Villa before snatching a draw from the jaws of defeat at Crystal Palace. The Foxes raced into a 2-0 lead before Jean-Philippe Mateta netted a brace for the spoils to be shared. Next time out, they again fell behind, this time against Everton, before snatching another point from the jaws of defeat. This means Leicester remains winless in their five Premier League games so far this season, drawing three and losing two. Only in their relegation campaign of 2022-23 have they gone six without a win from the start of the campaign in the competition.
Arsenal team news
Trossard’s suspension applies to all competitions, not just the Premier League. As a result, the Belgian is now back in Arteta’s team after missing the Bolton win. In that game, second-choice goalkeeper Neto couldn’t play because he was cup-tied. 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter made his debut and became the youngest-ever starter for Arsenal’s men’s team.
Bournemouth loanee Neto could make his Gunners debut here as David Raya is still a major doubt due to a muscular injury he sustained at the Etihad. Jurrien Timber’s participation is uncertain after missing the midweek victory with a knock. Myles Lewis-Skelly also suffered a knock on Wednesday but was always expected to be dropped.
Martin Ødegaard (ankle), Mikel Merino (shoulder), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee), Kieran Tierney (hamstring), and Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf) are all injured. Despite the upcoming visit of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, the Gunners should revert to their strongest XI.
Leicester team news
Jakub Stolarczyk and Patson Daka are long-term absentees for Leicester City, who are hoping to have Odsonne Édouard available here.
Arsenal vs Leicester head-to-head
Arsenal have won their last five Premier League games against Leicester, their joint-longest winning run against the Foxes in their league history (also five between 1908 and 1914 and between 1930 and 1932).
