One year on from being crowned European champions for the first time, England Women take on the World Cup hoping to add the elusive trophy to their cabinet. The Lionesses have made it to the semi-finals in each of the past two World Cups, securing a bronze medal in 2015 and finishing fourth last time out, beaten by Sweden in the third-place play-off.

England were perfect in qualifying for this summer’s World Cup, winning all 10 of their games, scoring 80 goals without conceding. The campaign came as part of England’s 30-game unbeaten run under Sarina Wiegman, but that has since come to an end, with the Lionesses losing 2-0 to Australia in April. England also suffered in their send-off game for the World Cup, held to a goalless draw by Portugal at Stadium MK earlier this month, before another stalemate in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Canada. Placed in a group alongside Denmark, China and Haiti, England are favourites to finish first and will hope to get underway with a win against the latter.

The Central American nation are making their World Cup debut, one of eight countries to be appearing at the tournament for the first time this summer. Haiti secured their spot at the World Cup via the CONCACAF W Championship, finishing third in their group to advance to the inter-confederation play-offs. There, Haiti thrashed Senegal 4-0 in their semi-final and then beat Chile 2-1 in the final to join Group D.

It hasn’t been the best build up for the World Cup though. Since beating Chile in the inter-confederation play-off final, Haiti have lost to Nigeria and South Korea (while beating Moldova) with the second defeat coming as a warm up for the World Cup.

England Women vs Haiti Women match stats

England have failed to score in their past two official matches (plus one unofficial game), their worst goalless run since April 2018, a strange occurrence given how dangerous they have been in attack under Wiegman. However, friendlies and tournament football are completely different, and Wiegman will know what she needs to do to get England up and running. Rachel Daly is likely to lead the line for the Lionesses, with Alessia Russo much better as an impact sub, and the Aston Villa striker comes into the World Cup off the back of a Golden Boot-winning 22 goals in the Women’s Super League.

Although this is expected to be a comfortable victory for England, we should disrespect Haiti. As recent games have shown, England can have problems breaking down tight defences, and Haiti will hope to back the middle of the pitch to nullify the impact of Ella Toone, Lauren James and co.
