Sarina Wiegman’s side were made to sweat by newcomers Haiti in their opening game of the World Cup, with Georgia Stanway’s retaken penalty making all the difference. Haiti’s goalkeeper Kerly Theus had athletically saved Stanway’s first spot-kick but she had unfortunately strayed off her line. Success means England have won six Women’s World Cup group-stage matches in a row since a 1-0 defeat against France in their opening fixture in 2015. “It was a very hard game. They [Haiti] were very unpredictable, very transitional. That’s what they showed and we struggled with that. We did create chances but we lost the ball and then they were gone. That was hard for us. We want to finish our chances. We did it with the penalty which was good because the win is the most important thing,” Weigman said after the game.

Denmark, meanwhile, needed a last-minute winner to edge past China in their opening game. Amalie Vangsgaard’s headed effort broke the deadlock in a game of few clear-cut chances. “I’ve waited a long time for the first international goal, so I must have saved it for the best time. It’s super important that we got off to a good start to the World Cup,” Vangsgaard said. England will be wary of the familiar Pernille Harder who has to date bagged 70 goals for her national team. Last season, Harder’s club side Chelsea won 10 out of 10 games Harder featured in and she created on average 1.8 chances every game across just 607 minutes of WSL action, while she recorded an expected assists value of 0.24 per game. She also recorded the crucial assist for Sam Kerr to secure Chelsea’s third successive WSL and FA Cup Double.

With both sides having won their opening group game, victory here could seal a spot in the knockout stages, depending on the outcome between China and Haiti.
