When the last 16 draw was made, a lot of eyes will have been drawn towards this tie, a repeat of the 2019/20 Champions League final. Then, Bayern Munich beat PSG 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kingsley Coman and that’s exactly what happened in the first leg, giving the German side the advantage.
The win extended Bayern Munich’s perfect run in the Champions League season to seven games, last achieving that feat when they went onto win the competition in 2019/20. Julian Nagelsmann’s side did lose their very next match after beating PSG in the first leg, beaten 3-2 by Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, but they have bounced back with a very impressive 3-0 victory over Union Berlin and 2-1 win against Stuttgart to stay top on goal difference.
PSG were going through a rough patch when they welcomed Bayern to the Parc des Princes and the defeat capped off a run of three straight losses. In that run, PSG were also knocked out of the Coupe de France by bitter rivals Marseille and beaten 3-1 by Monaco in Ligue 1.
However, they have bounced back with three straight wins including a 3-0 revenge victory over Marseille in the league to consolidate their spot at the top of Ligue 1. But the main aim for PSG remains the Champions League and of the six times they’ve lost the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie, they’ve only advanced once.

Kylian Mbappe wasn’t expected to play against Bayern in the first leg but he made a quick recovery to come off the bench. The Frenchman wasn’t at full strength clearly but still managed to get at the Bayern defence and thought he had equalised only to see it ruled out for offside. It was just the second time in seven Champions League appearances that Mbappe had failed to score this season, and he has scored five goals in his past three Ligue 1 matches.
Bayern Munich ended the first leg with 10 men following Benjamin Pavard’s red card (for two bookings) and committed 18 fouls but he was the only player to be punished. In comparison, PSG committed just eight fouls and received two yellow cards.

Bayern Munich will always hold their Champions League final win over the heads of PSG, but the French side may draw some confidence from the last knockout meeting. In the quarter-finals of the 2020/21 Champions League, PSG dumped Bayern out on away goals, the last team to benefit from the rule before it was removed from the competition. Then, they also lost 1-0 at home but it’s worth noting that was in the second leg.
