West Ham put their Premier League troubles to one side on Thursday when they welcome Cypriot outfit AEK Larnaca to the London Stadium for the second leg of their Europa Conference League last-16 tie (8pm kick-off, UK time).

At various stages across this season, David Moyes has appeared on the brink of dismissal, but the West Ham board have stuck with the now-polarising Glaswegian thus far. The current landscape in the Premier League is bleak, but on the continental scene, West Ham have won nine Conference League games in a row.

Their latest came last week in Cyprus as the Hammers secured a 2-0 advantage in the first leg of their last-16 meeting with AEK Larnaca. A first-half brace from Michail Antonio separated the two clubs, with his first bringing some much-needed respite for the travelling side as Larnaca were starting to create some serious momentum in the opening phase of play.

That should give Guardians boss Jose Luis Oltra some encouragement heading into this second leg. The coastal club had more shots than West Ham at the AEK Arena last week, boasted 14 corners to the Londoners’ zero and had 50% of the possession. They certainly didn’t look out of their depth against the Premier League strugglers.

An early goal for them could shift the complexion of this tie and provoke a serious mood change at the London Stadium after West Ham were booed off in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa. The atmosphere is sour in E20, and Larnaca will look to use that to their advantage.

Michail Antonio scored both of West Ham’s two goals last week in the club’s reverse fixture against AEK Larnaka, doing so from his only two touches in the opposition box. It was his first ever brace in Europe and he may well fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet again given his proficiency last week.

Incredibly, West Ham have never lost a second leg played at home during a knockout stage tie in any European competition. They have progressed to the next round in eight of those nine previous instances, only failing to do so in the second round of the UEFA Cup in 1999/2000 against FCSB.
