Every Premier League club ranked by reliance on their top goalscorer this season

Which clubs are most reliant on their top scorers?

The term ‘one-man team’ is thrown around pretty often among Premier League fanbases, but there’s no doubt it can be blown out of proportion.

Take Mo Salah last year. He scored 29 goals in the league and quite clearly had a huge hand in Liverpool winning the title.

But this year, the Egyptian has only netted four in his 15 matches. There have been recent conversations among fans as to whether it’s better to have one player scoring a large majority of goals, or to have them spread out.

The general consensus is that you’d rather have one exceptional goalscorer than four good ones. But which Premier League team is the most reliant on the their top scorer so far this season?

20. Arsenal

  • Team goals: 42
  • Top scorers: Viktor Gyokeres, Leandro Trossard, 5 goals (11.9%)

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League without having a clear goalscorer. The Gunners spent big in the summer to sign Viktor Gyokeres but the Sweede is yet to get going. He is their joint-top scorer this season, alongside Leandro Trossard, but they’ve only scored five goals each.

19. Wolves

  • Team goals: 15
  • Top scorers: Hwang Hee-chan, Ladislav Krejci, Santiago Bueno, Mateus Mane, 2 goals (13.33%)

Does this sum up Wolverhampton Wanderers‘ season so far? They’ve scored just 15 goals in the league all season, and have only four players to have netted more than one. Hwang Hee-chan, Ladislav Krejci, Santiago Bueno and Mateus Mane have all scored twice, leading the way for Wolves.

18. Man Utd

  • Team goals: 41
  • Top scorer: Bryan Mbeumo, 8 goals (19.51%)

Manchester United are among the top scorers in the Premier League this season. In fact, only the top two sides have scored more. And the goals have been pretty spread out, with Bryan Mbeump top-scoring on eight. He sits three clear of Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes among Red Devils players,

=16. Burnley

  • Team goals: 25
  • Top scorer: Jaidon Anthony, Zian Flemming, 5 goals (20%)

Burnley had a reputation last season for being solid in defence but perhaps a bit too goal shy, despite winning promotion from the Championship with 100 points.

Their attack continues to struggle this season, with just 25 goals. Ten of those have come from just two players, with Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming netting five apiece.

=16. Everton

  • Team goals: 25
  • Top scorer: Thierno Barry, 5 goals (20%)

Thierno Barry has scored five goals in his past nine Premier League games for Everton. And it’s enough to make him the Toffees’ top scorer. Goals have been a big problem for Everton, with just 25 goals across the campaign. They do have Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall both on four goals each, too.

15. Chelsea

  • Team goals: 39
  • Top scorer: Joao Pedro, 8 goals (20.51%)

Chelsea spent heavily on forwards this summer, and one of them is their top scorer. Joao Pedro has scored eight of Chelsea’s 39 league goals this season, having been the main man through the middle with Liam Delap struggling for injuries. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez is pretty close behind, though, with seven goals.

14. Sunderland

  • Team goals: 24
  • Top scorer: Brian Brobbey, 5 goals (20.83%)

Sunderland‘s impressive Premier League campaign has been down to their defence more than their attack. The Black Cats have only scored 24 goals in the league, with Brian Brobbey responsible for five of them. Slightly worryingly for Sunderland, Brobbey has come on as a sub in more games than he’s started in the league.

13. Tottenham

  • Team goals: 33
  • Top scorer: Richarlison, 7 goals (21.21%)

Tottenham Hotspur have stuggled this season, and they sit in the middle of the table for goals scored. Richarlison is their top scorer in the league on seven goals, though five of those came in his first 12 matches. The Brazilian is also currently injured, so Tottenham have had to rely on their joint-second top scorers. Centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

12. Nottingham Forest

  • Team goals: 23
  • Top scorer: Morgan Gibbs-White, 5 goals (21.74%)

There’s no sugar-coating it — Nottingham Forest have had a woeful season. And goals have been a problem. They’ve scored 23 goals so far this season, with Morgan Gibbs-White their top scorer on five. Strikers Chris Wood and Igor Thiago have just two goals each, with Callum Hudson-Odoi their second-top scorer on three.

=10. Aston Villa

  • Team goals: 35
  • Top scorer: Ollie Watkins, 8 goals (22.86%)

Ollie Watkins flew up the rankings of Aston Villa‘s top scorers after a slow start to the season. And the Englishman has now scored more league goals than any other Villa player this season. He sits one ahead of Morgan Rogers, responsible for a decent chunk of Aston Villa’s 35 goals so far.

=10. Liverpool

  • Team goals: 35
  • Top scorer: Hugo Ekitike, 8 goals (22.86%)

Many were expecting Alexander Isak to be among the goals for Liverpool this season. But with his injury and slow start, the Reds have had to rely on Hugo Ekitike. And the Frenchman has been a strong player, with eight goals so far this season. Cody Gakpo is the only other Liverpool player to hit at least five goals in the league.

9. Brighton

  • Team goals: 33
  • Top scorer: Danny Welbeck, 8 goals (24.24%)

Danny Welbeck continues to show he’s still got plenty left in the tank with eight goals for Brighton and Hove Albion this season. The Englishman is responsible for just under a quarter of the Seagulls’ league goals, and is five clear of any other Brighton player.

=7. Fulham

  • Team goals: 32
  • Top scorers: Harry Wilson, 8 goals (25%)

Harry Wilson has been excellent for Fulham this season. And not just because he’s scoring goals. But he is scoring goals. The Welshman has netted eight in the league this season, three more than any other Fulham player.

=7. Newcastle

  • Team goals: 32
  • Top scorer: Bruno Guimaraes, 8 goals (25%)

Newcastle United were one of the teams to bring a new striker in over the summer. But Nick Woltemade is not their top scorer right now. The German is second, but sits one goal behind Bruno Guimaraes who has netted eight for the Magpies this season.

6. West Ham

  • Team goals: 27
  • Top scorer: Jarrod Bowen, 7 goals (25.93%)

Where would West Ham United be without Jarrod Bowen? Their captain has been excellent for the Hammers for the last few seasons and registered double digits for goals and assists this season. Even this season when he has come under scrutiny, Bowen has still scored just over a quarter (seven) of West Ham’s league goals.

5. Bournemouth

  • Team goals: 38
  • Top scorer: Antoine Semenyo, 10 goals (25.93%)

This isn’t a stat Bournemouth fans will like to see. Because Antoine Semenyo no longer players for their club. But he remains the Cherries’ top scorer, responsible for 25.93% of their 38 league goals so far. Among players still at the club, Eli Junior Krupi has scored seven for Bournemouth, trailing Semenyo by three.

4. Leeds

  • Team goals: 31
  • Top scorer: Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 9 goals (29.03%)

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has really found his feet at Leeds United. The English striker has scored nine league goals so far this season, his best return in a single campaign since 2020-21. He’ll be hoping to hit double figures in the league for just the third time in his career. And Leeds are grateful for his contributions.

3. Crystal Palace

  • Team goals: 24
  • Top scorer: Jean-Philippe Mateta, 8 goals (33.33%)

Goals have been hard to come by for Crystal Palace this season, with just 24 in the league. Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored eight of those, though only one has come since the start of December. When Mateta isn’t firing, Palace have struggled, with Daniel Munoz and Ismaila Sarr their next top-scorers with three goals each.

2. Man City

  • Team goals: 47
  • Top scorer: Erling Haaland, 20 goals (42.55%)

Erling Haaland looks on his way to a third Golden Boot in four Premier League seasons. The Norwegian has scored 20 of Manchester City‘s 47 league goals so far. There was a time where Man City were even more reliant on Haaland, and Burnley defender Maxime Esteve was their second-top scorer. But Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders have now scored seven and five, respectively.

1. Brentford

  • Team goals: 35
  • Top scorer: Igor Thiago, 16 goals (45.71%)

Brentford were most people’s pick for relegation before the season started but the Bees have been relatively steady under Keith Andrews. And Igor Thiago’s form has been integral with 16 of their 35 league goals. He has scored 10 more goals than any other Brentford player this season. Brentford aren’t missing Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo as much as people thought.
