Burnley 2026/27 Championship preview
Burnley start life back in the Championship, again. The Clarets have become the latest yo-yo side, switching between the Premier League and Championship between the past six seasons. That run started with Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League in 2022. But they were promoted at the first time of asking, with 101 points.
The Clarets got just under one fifth of those points in their Premier League return, finishing 19th. They bounced back with another century of points in the Championship, but last season brought abject failure. Burnley now approach the new Championship season hoping they can mimic their past two. They haven’t spent more than one season in the Championship since the early 2010s, when it took them four seasons to come back from Premier League relegation.
It’s all change at Turf Moor, though. Scott Parker was relieved of his duties in late April, and he has been permanently replaced. Nicky Hayen has come in as new manager, after spending the second half of last season in charge of Genk. It’s his first time managing in England, with a CV mainly covering home nation Belgium and a brief stint in Wales.
