Premier League TOTW Gameweek 8: Villa pair lead the way after downing Man City

Aston Villa were one of the main stories of the Premier League weekend after beating Manchester City and two of their players feature in our Squawka Score Team of the Week.

Unsurprisingly, there’s also room for two Arsenal players after the Gunners earned a comfortable 2-0 home win over Everton, while a Bournemouth pair make the team after the Cherries thumped Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, one of the stand-out games of the weekend saw Tottenham Hotspur upset the odds – and the history – to win a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge for only the second time.

There were further wins for Fulham, Liverpool and Newcastle United. But do any of their players make our Squawka Score team of the week?

The Squawka Score is our proprietary performance rating, combining multiple Opta stats into a single score. It benchmarks players against their positional peers, allowing quick comparisons. Learn more about how it works here: https://www.squawka.com/en/news/squawka-score-explained/

GK: James Trafford (Leeds United)

  • Squawka Score: 7.9

It’s yet another inclusion for Leeds United‘s James Trafford in our Team of the Week as the England stopper kept a clean sheet and made four saves in his side’s goalless draw at Sunderland. The ex-Burnley man also made six claims in another confident showing.

Honourable mention: Lukas Hornicek (7.7)

A clean sheet for Lukas Hornicek would’ve been enough to keep him into the team in previous weeks. He made four saves from the four shots he faced in Newcastle’s 0-2 win at Crystal Palace.

RB: Daniel Munoz (Nottingham Forest)

  • Squawka Score: 7.9

Daniel Munoz was one of the stand-out performers of the week, assisting Neco Williams for Forest’s only goal in their 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town. The Colombia international won four of his five attempted tackles and made an impressive seven final-third passes as the Tricky Trees toiled in their search for a winner at Portman Road.

Honourable mention: Ben White (7.7)

Ben White’s resurgence at Arsenal continued with another fine display in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Everton. He earned an assist from his three chances created and completed three take-ons.

CB: Gabriel Magalhaes (Arsenal)

  • Squawka Score: 8.5

The highest defender’s score in a few weeks, Gabriel Magalhaes scored in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Everton, but he was equally as impressive in shutting the Toffees out. The Brazilian made eight clearances and two interceptions as well as one block.

Honourable mention: Ezri Konsa (7.6)

Another goalscoring Arsenal centre-back this weekend was Ezri Konsa. The former Aston Villa man won five of his six duels in a strong showing.

CB: James Hill (Bournemouth)

  • Squawka Score: 7.7

James Hill makes the team for the second consecutive week with a second consecutive 7.7 score. The Bournemouth centre-back made seven clearances, won six of his seven tackles and made four interceptions in an outstanding display as the Cherries ran out 0-3 winners against Manchester United.

Honourable mention: Ethan Pinnock (7.5)

Ethan Pinnock was unfortunate to be on the losing side in Coventry’s 0-1 defeat to Fulham after making seven clearances and three blocks for the Sky Blues.

LB: Neco Williams

  • Squawka Score: 8.1

Both of Nottingham Forest‘s full-backs made the team this week. Neco Williams was the goalscorer for his side in that draw at Ipswich Town. He created two chances for his team-mates and came out on top in 60% of his duels on the night.

Honourable mention: Andy Robertson (7.3)

Tottenham were excellent in their 0-2 win at Chelsea and Andy Robertson was one of their stand-out performers with seven final-third passes and some tidy defensive actions.

CM: Declan Rice (Arsenal)

  • Squawka Score: 7.3

Another matchday, another appearance for Declan Rice in our Squawka Score team of the week. The Arsenal midfielder made 50 passes at 95% accuracy in the win over Everton and created four chances while winning his one attempted tackle.

Honourable mention: Exequiel Palacios (7.2)

Ipswich struggled for possession against Nottingham Forest, despite Exequiel Palacios winning the ball back on 14 occasions and creating two chances in their 1-1 draw.

CM: Mamadou Sangare

  • Squawka Score: 7.7

The highest-scoring central midfielder of the round, Brentford‘s Sangare made 11 recoveries and won an impressive 10 duels from 14 attempted in his side’s 1-1 draw at Hull City. He also won two interceptions and broke up the Tigers’ rhythm throughout.

Honourable mention: Elliot Anderson (7.0)

A lone bright spark for City in their defeat at Aston Villa. 95% pass accuracy on 69 passes, eight duels won from 11 and seven ball recoveries for the England midfielder at Villa Park.

RW: Oscar Bobb (Fulham)

  • Squawka Score: 8.1

Oscar Bobb finally broke his Premier League duck for Fulham by scoring the winner at Coventry. The Norwegian winger also created four chances, completed two take-ons and made seven touches in the Sky Blues’ box as the stand-out player in a 0-1 victory for the Cottagers.

Honourable mention: Dango Outtara (8.1)

The goalscorer for Brentford in their draw with Hull, Outtara also took a total of four shots and nine opposition-box touches in a threatening display.

CAM: John McGinn (Aston Villa)

  • Squawka Score: 7.9

Playing in a more advanced role, John McGinn excelled as Villa overcame Manchester City, earning himself an assist from one of the four chances he created. The Scotland man also won five of his eight duels in a battling display.

Honourable mention: Julio Enciso (7.7)

Six take-ons are usually enough to catch the eye, but Enciso also scored Ipswich’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in the Friday night clash.

LW: Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth)

  • Squawka Score: 7.9

One of the driving forces behind Bournemouth’s thumping win at Old Trafford. Tavernier swept home his team’s second goal, created two big chances and linked up brilliantly with Evanilson and Rayan in a terrific Bournemouth display.

Honourable mention: Mathys Tel (7.8)

Tel was unlucky to miss out on the team after his brilliantly solo goal secured the win for Tottenham. The Frenchman also managed four take-ons and 10 touches in the Chelsea box as they won 4-0.

ST: Nicolas Jackson

  • Squawka Score: 8.5

Two goals in Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over league-leading Manchester City unsurprisingly fire Nicolas Jackson into our XI for this week. The Senegalese striker also won more than half of his duels and completed two take-ons while terrorising the Cityzen’s defence throughout.

Honourable mention: Alexander Isak (7.9)

Isak scored his third consecutive Premier League game as Liverpool overcame Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield. He also created three chances for his teammates in the win.
