United States have sent out a statement of intent in Group D at the 2026 World Cup after dominant wins over Paraguay and Australia.
The co-hosts have already secured first place and a spot in the next round.
Now, the two teams they beat will fight for second place after Turkey were eliminated from contention following their loss to the Albirroja.

United States Group D odds
United States head up the betting market for Group D, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side enjoying the perfect start after they thrashed Paraguay 4-1 thanks to goals from a Folarin Balogun brace, and Giovanni Reyna, plus an own goal from Damian Bobadilla.
Christian Pulisic is the star name for the Stars and Stripes and he put on a fantastic performance in their opening game, in which he grabbed an assist.
United States then turned up to beat Australia in their second game, winning that battle 2-0. It secured top spot with a game to spare, thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Turkey Group D odds
As far as their playoff route went, Turkey faced very little trouble in qualifying for the 2026 tournament. Vincenzo Montella’s men recorded successive 1-0 victories over Romania in the semi-final and Kosovo in the final to book their ticket this summer.
But it all went to waste with two straight defeats to kick-start their World Cup campaign, despite being favoured in both.
The Crescent Stars are on pace to making negative history in the tournament, in fact. They currently have the most shot attempts (62) of any team to not have scored in a single edition.
Australia Group D odds
That victory against Turkey has massively improved the Socceroos chances of making the Round of 32. It was an unexpected victory but one that has blown Group D wide open.
The loss to the United States was expected but they are still second. Now, a decisive head-to-head matchup against third-placed Paraguay next week in Santa Clara.
Australia have qualified for the last five World Cups and their route to this one was relatively straight forward, topping Group C in the AFC qualifying section. The glory days of Tim Cahill might be behind them but there’s plenty of talent in the ranks for Tony Popovic, including Middlesbrough’s Riley McGree and Watford’s Nestory Irankunda.
Paraguay Group D odds
Paraguay were able to come through the CONMEBOL qualification group with relative ease, sitting eight points above the playoff places. The Albirroja’s success was built on a solid defence, with only 10 goals conceded (the same amount as confederation winners, Argentina) but they struggled in attack, scoring just 14 times in 18 matches.
Although that solid defence went out the window in the opening game of the World Cup, which they lost heavily 4-1 to the United States, it came right back against Turkey.
A heroic performance playing the entire second half with 10 men saw them run out winners courtesy of the fastest goal of the tournament so far.
