Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table thanks to their 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

The Gunners were able to capitalise on Manchester City‘s defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion to move three points clear. Enzo Maresca‘s Man City dropped to second, while Brighton have closed the gap in third. Chelsea moved up to fourth with their win over Manchester United, who now sit 17th and only outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

Crystal Palace dropped into the bottom three after their loss to Tottenham Hotspur, joining Nottingham Forest and Sunderland who also lost. Coventry City beat the Black Cats to jump out of the relegation zone, though things are very tight at the bottom.

Here are the best Premier League stats and records you might have missed from Gameweek 9.

Chelsea 2-0 Man Utd

  • Cole Palmer became the third-fastest player to score 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea, in his 105th game.

Chelsea bounced back from their defeat to Tottenham with an important win over Man Utd at Stamford Bridge. The Blues had to fight hard for the victory, weathering the storm in the first half. They got the breakthrough via Morgan Rogers, but the game really turned in their favour when Cole Palmer converted from the spot.

Lisandro Martinez was penalised for a reckless challenge on Wesley Fofana from a corner, catching the Frenchman with his elbows. He was sent off for a second yellow card, giving Man Utd a mountain to climb. But it was also a reason for Palmer to celebrate, netting his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea. Coming in his 105th game, only two players have hit 50 Premier League goals quicker than Palmer; Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink did it in 84 games, while Diego Costa needed 85.

Bournemouth 2-0 Leeds

  • Evanilson is on his best scoring streak in the Premier League, netting in four consecutive matches.

Bournemouth had a tough start to the season but they are now fully up and running under Marco Rose. The Cherries beat Leeds United 2-0 for their sixth win in a row across all competitions, all without conceding a goal. Evanilson got Bournemouth under way against Leeds, opening the scoring just after the half-hour mark. It was his fourth goal of the season, to go alongside four assists. Only Erling Haaland (nine) has been directly involved in more goals than Evanilson’s eight in the Premier League this season.

Evanilson’s scoring run has played a big part in Bournemouth’s unbeaten streak. He scored his first goal of the season in the 5-1 defeat to Chelsea, albeit in fortunate circumstances. But that started a run of four successive league games in which Evanilson has scored. It’s his best run in the Premier League, and matches the four-game scoring streak for Porto B in the 2020/21 Liga Portugal 2 campaign.

Brentford 2-0 Nottingham Forest

  • Brentford won in their 100th Premier League home game.

Saturday was a good day for Brentford. The Bees beat Nottingham Forest to end a three-game winless run, keeping them sixth in the Premier League. They were aided by a Nikola Milenkovic own goal, before Igor Thiago made things slightly more comfortable. Caoimhin Kelleher also did his bit in the Brentford goal, with a clean sheet and 12 loose-ball recoveries.

But the most significant statistic is that Brentford have now played 100 Premier League games at the Gtech Community Stadium. This win was number 42 in the Premier League, alongside 30 draws and 28 defeats. That’s not a bad return for a team that were only promoted in 2021.

Coventry 3-1 Sunderland

  • Sunderland have taken just five points from nine Premier League games.

Look away Sunderland fans. The Black Cats had a dream return to the Premier League last season, finishing seventh in the table. It secured Europa League football, edging out the likes of Brighton, Brentford and Chelsea. There were some question marks over Sunderland’s campaign, as their seventh-placed finish came despite having negative goal difference and the fourth-worst attack. And those things seem to have caught up with Regis Le Bris’ side.

Sunderland are bottom of the table after nine games this season, with just one win and two draws alongside six defeats. They’ve only scored seven goals, the second-fewest in the division so far, and have one of the worst defences. Things aren’t looking good for Sunderland right now, and some fans may remember their start to the 2016/17 season. Back then, Sunderland only had two points from nine games and went on to be relegated — starting an eight-year absence from the Premier League.

Hull 2-2 Ipswich

  • Ipswich have won eight points from losing positions this season, the most in the Premier League.

There are two ways you could look at Ipswich Town‘s 2-2 draw with Hull City. The first is that they dropped two points from a winning position. The Tractor Boys took the lead through Florentino and were eventually pegged back, having to settle for a draw. But they also technically gained a point from a losing position. Because Tim Iroegbunam and Oli McBurnie turned a deficit to a lead for Hull, before Julio Enciso brought Ipswich back level.

Ipswich have now gained eight points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, the most in the division. The Tractor Boys have trailed against Hull and Nottingham Forest and earned a point, while coming from behind to win against Crystal Palace and Fulham. The latter result saw Ipswich trailing as late as the 87th minute, before two late goals sealed the win.

Man City 0-1 Brighton

  • Brighton beat Man City away from home for the first time in the club’s history.

Brighton continue to grow under Fabian Hurzeler and they look to be in a good position to challenge for Champions League football, even at this early stage of the season. Some people are even quietly discussing a potential title charge. While that may seen far-fetched, Brighton have shown that they can battle with the best. Having already beaten Arsenal quite comfortably this season, Brighton have now added Man City’s scalp to their collection.

It was a significant win too. Although Brighton have beaten Man City before, they had never done it away from home. That’s not a Premier League-era stat either. Brighton had never beaten Man City away from home in any competition, in 17 previous attempts. Game number 18 was the one though, with Yasin Ayari scoring the only goal in the 11th minute, securing the points and their best-ever start to a Premier League campaign (19 points from nine games).

Tottenham 2-0 Crystal Palace

  • Crystal Palace faced their most shots in a single Premier League game since such records began in 2004/05.

A lot of the eyes from this game will be on Tottenham getting their third consecutive win, lifting them into the top half of the table. And there will then be the conversation around Jean-Philippe Mateta‘s early red card taking the game away from Crystal Palace. So there may be less pressure on Pierre Sage‘s job as things stand. But the red card did change the way Crystal Palace had to set up, and they were constantly under the cosh.

Despite only scoring two goals from set-pieces, Tottenham had 34 shots against Crystal Palace. It was their most in a single Premier League game since February 2016 when they also managed the same number against Swansea City. But it was the most shots Crystal Palace have faced in a single Premier League games, since such records started being tracked in 2004/05.

Aston Villa 1-1 Fulham

  • Fulham had 2.2 Expected Goals against Aston Villa, the fifth-most of any visiting side at Villa Park since the start of 2023/24.

Fulham fans will no doubt be ruing their draw with Aston Villa. The Cottagers needed an own goal to seal the point at Villa Park, despite their second-half pressure. Alvaro Arbeloa’s side had 40 touches in the opposition box and 2.2 Expected Goals — the fifth-most of any visiting side at Villa Park since the start of the 2023/24 season.

It’s indicative of Fulham’s season. The Cottagers have underperformed against their xG by -4.46 this season, the third-worst in the Premier League. Only Nottingham Forest (-8.34) and Sunderland (-6.21) have been worse this season.

Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal

  • Arsenal won a game at Anfield for the first time since September 2012, ending a 16-game winless run.

This was a pretty perfect weekend for Arsenal. Not only did they see Man City drop points again, but the Gunners also moved top of the table with a win over Liverpool. And it was a long-awaited victory. Arsenal travelled to Anfield on Sunday knowing the club hadn’t won at the ground in 14 years. There was a penalty shootout victory in the Carabao Cup in October 2020, but the match officially ended in a draw.

Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla scored the goals for Arsenal in their 2-0 win at Anfield in 2012, with Arsene Wenger besting Brendan Rodgers in the dugout. Fast forward 14 years, and another German was on the scoresheet. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game, to make a bit of history for himself. He is now the highest-scoring German in Premier League history, with his 46th goal moving him one clear of Ilkay Gundogan.
