Senegal are set for their third straight appearance at the World Cup finals in 2026.
The Lions of Teranga will travel to North America as the ‘People’s Afcon Champions’ having won the final of the competition back in January – despite the trophy later being awarded to hosts Morocco in controversial circumstances.
They will, therefore, hope to continue their already memorable 2026 at the World Cup.
It is now 24 years since they burst onto the scene in Japan and South Korea, with the likes of Papa Bouba Diop, El-Hadji Diouf, Khalilou Fadiga and Salif Diao helping them reach the quarter-finals.

Senegal odds to win the World Cup
At the time of writing, Senegal are considered as outsiders to go all the way in 2026.
Pape Thiaw’s side do already have silverware under their belt this year, following their successful Afcon defence. Yet, repeating that on the world stage is a big ask.
The Lions of Teranga earned many new fans on their debut in 2002, when they stunned defending champions France in the opening match of the tournament.
They will hope to recapture some of that spirit just under a quarter of a century on, in their bid to better that run to the quarter-finals.
Bookmakers are offering odds of 125/1 for them to go all the way to glory.
Senegal odds to win Group I
Senegal have been drawn in Group I alongside France and Norway and they learned their final group opponents in March as Iraq beat Bolivia in the intercontinental playoffs.
Thiaw’s side know they face a tough task. Les Bleus have reached the final of the last two tournaments, while Erling Haaland will be desperate to make his mark for the returning Norwegians.
Second place seems like Senegal’s best bet, while they could also progress as one of the best third-placed teams, providing they accumulate plenty of points. They are expected to finish above Iraq.

These are still to be confirmed, but Senegal will definitely have their work cut out in Group I. They are backed to get out of the group though, odds-on to do so.

Fitness permitting, you would expect Senegal’s charge to be led by their inspirational skipper, Sadio Mane.
The former Liverpool forward is enjoying another productive campaign with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, and would love to make his mark on the biggest stage of all.
Mane has two additional motives. He will be keen to make up for lost time after injury ruled him out of the 2022 World Cup.
Plus, at the age of 34 when the tournament starts, it will likely be his last crack at the finals.
Aside from Mane, there are several players with attacking quality that will be familiar to followers of the Premier League, in the likes of Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr.
