Paraguay’s return to the World Cup did not go to plan, as they were comprehensively swept aside by United States in their opening match.
Los Guaranies are back at the finals for the first time since reaching the last eight in 2010, when their ground-breaking run was halted by eventual champions Spain.
However, it was a baptism of fire for Gustavo Alfaro’s side, who simply had no answer to the inspired co-hosts on Friday.
Paraguay were beaten 4-1 in Los Angeles, and have work to do if they are to progress from Group D.

Paraguay odds to win the World Cup
At pre-tournament odds of around 300/1 with most bookmakers, it was already clear that Paraguay were not regarded as one of the main contenders to win this summer’s World Cup.
Those odds have lengthened to around 525/1 following the rout they suffered at the hands of United States. Their goal difference also took a hammering as a result, so they are already playing catch-up after just one game in Group D.
Paraguay odds to win Group D
Before the tournament, Paraguay were regarded as the third-favourites to win Group D, behind Turkey and United States.
However, Friday’s 4-1 defeat has seen them fall below Australia in the pecking order, with odds of 25/1 now available for them to recover to finish at the summit of the group.
To do that alone, they will need to win their final two group games, and hope for favours from elsewhere.
Paraguay stage of elimination odds
Paraguay, despite initially being considered third-favourites to win Group D, were still expected to progress, given an odds-on chance of doing so.
However, the manner of their defeat in the opening match has seen their chances of being eliminated from the group stage made odds-on. All is not lost yet, though, as at least a win from their next two games would keep them in contention at the very least.
Paraguay World Cup Top Goalscorer Odds
Goals are an issue for this Paraguay side. No player in the squad has managed to reach 10 international goals as yet with Miguel Almiron’s total of nine the highest of any current Paraguay player. As a result, it’s not a surprise that none of their players are considered to be genuine contenders in the Golden Boot chase this summer.
Despite a yellow card for simulation, Almiron was one of the few players who did look threatening against United States. But winning the Golden Boot is a whole different ball game. Bet365 clearly don’t fancy him, offering 1000/1 on him doing so.
