Dominic Solanke: England’s former ‘Golden Boy’ finally back in the senior squad

Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke has been called up to the England squad for the first time in seven years.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been left out by interim head coach Lee Carsley, as well as Solanke’s clubmate James Maddison and West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen.

Rising Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers has also missed out and will be with the Under-21 squad again instead. Also dropping out of the squad are Eberechi Eze and Tino Livramento, both of whom were part of September’s contingent.

But there are returns for the fit-again Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Kyle Walker after injuries caused them to be absent last time out.

Solanke, 27, has scored three goals across six games for Spurs following his £65 million move from Bournemouth over the summer. He netted 21 times in 42 games last season but was not included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championship. Harry Kane, Ivan Toney, and Ollie Watkins were selected ahead of him.

His only senior England appearance came while he was representing Liverpool in November 2017 when he came on as a substitute in a goalless friendly against Brazil.

That first cap was earned after starring in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which England’s U20 side won. Solanke struck on four occasions, subsequently winning the Golden Ball as the player of the tournament.
