Liverpool entered the 2024/25 Premier League season with new management, aiming to maintain the standards set by their previous leader.

Jürgen Klopp ended an illustrious period in club history when he stepped down following an eighth full campaign at Anfield.

During those seasons, Liverpool finished inside the top four on seven occasions and most notably won England’s top division in 2020.

No matter who followed the affable German, it was big shoes to fill, but the powers that be are confident in his successor Arne Slot, who arrived following an impressive stint at Dutch powerhouse Feyenoord.

It was there Slot, against more illustrious competitors, became a champion while, like Klopp, he was soon renowned for getting the best out of those under his tutelage.

Klopp has left behind a battle-hardened squad, a blend of experience and youth, that finished third in last season’s championship. The Reds, who boast a 100% record after three matches, are currently priced at 9/2 by BetMGM to win the Premier League in 2024/25, the implied probability of this being just 18.2%.

So, can Liverpool close the nine-point gap on reigning champions Manchester City? Read on for everything you need to know about the upcoming season.

Liverpool summer transfer window business

Liverpool transfers in

Liverpool made two signings during the 2004 summer transfer window. Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus, while Giorgi Mamardashvili remains on loan at Valencia before moving to Anfield permanently next year.

Liverpool transfers out

During this period, several players have left the club. Adrián and Joel Matip’s contracts have expired, and Thiago Alcántara has announced his retirement. Calvin Ramsay and Stefan Bajcetic continue developing at Wigan in League One and Red Bull Salzburg, respectively. Sepp van den Berg and Fábio Carvalho have relocated to Brentford.

Who are Liverpool’s most important players?

Liverpool’s top Premier League Golden Boot contender: Mohamed Salah

With only one year left on his current deal, it was uncertain whether Mohamed Salah will play in his eighth consecutive Premier League season for Liverpool, but those concerns have disappeared with the Egyptian forward starting the 2024/25 season in fine form.

After moving from Serie A, following a brief stint at Chelsea, the Egyptian forward has been nothing short of a sensation. Salah is arguably the league’s top footballer, despite growing competition from others nationwide.

Consistency has been Salah’s key strength. As a predominantly right-sided forward favouring his left foot, the 32-year-old scored 155 goals in 250 appearances for the 19-time English champions.

However, last season was Salah’s least prolific, as he netted 18 goals, marking only the third time he failed to reach the 20-goal mark.

Despite this, he still finished as Liverpool’s top scorer, seven goals ahead of Darwin Núñez, whom many expect to have a significant role under Slot, but that hasn’t come to pass yet as Salah has featured in every Premier League outing to date, subsequently registering three goals.

Liverpool’s primary playmaker: Mohamed Salah

It’s not just with finishing off chances where Salah contributes in a Reds jersey, but he’s more often than not the one providing those opportunities. During the 2023/24 season, no Liverpool footballer produced more (66), though Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Díaz (both 64) came close. However, the former PFA Player of the Year saw more conversions as he finished with ten assists, the only Liverpool player to reach double figures in this metric.

That being said, it’s worth pointing out that Alexander-Arnold played 376 fewer minutes, equivalent to four and a bit full games, and registered six fewer assists. It’s expected the hybrid full-back, who enjoys stepping into midfield from his right-back berth, could become a pivotal figure in Slot’s set-up, as he significantly utilised this particular scheme at his former club. Alexander-Arnold, in turn, could replace Salah as Liverpool’s primary playmaker, though it remains to be seen as Salah has already posted three assists this season to Alexander-Arnold’s none.

Liverpool’s card magnet & top tackler: Ryan Gravenberch

“We really need you,” Klopp reportedly told Wataru Endo during their first meeting at the Reds’ training ground. Based on subsequent performances, the Japanese international effortlessly followed in Fabinho’s footsteps; however, there were instances when he seemed to get carried away, as evidenced by his accumulation of ten yellow cards, the highest among all Liverpool players. Núñez was a close rival with nine cards.

When it came to fouls committed, three players recorded at least 50, including Endo with 50 fouls. The South American duo of Luis Díaz (54) and Alexis Mac Allister (53) topped the list, reflecting their robust style of play. The former player was known for being high-pressing, mobile, and energetic. Gary Neville once said on commentary, “He’s like a Duracell bunny. He plays like he’s an eight-or nine-year-old kid.”

Mac Allister frequently positioned himself between Liverpool’s midfielders and was always ready to get involved, as Klopp demanded. Klopp often wanted his players in the middle third to win back possession once it was lost quickly. Slot is doing the same, but unlike his predecessor, he hasn’t turned to Endo as often. Ryan Gravenberch has taken over the Japanese international’s spot but has become somewhat susceptible to accumulating fouls, having amassed a team-high eight tackles after three appearances and committing the same number of fouls, leading to one yellow card.

Liverpool’s rising star: Harvey Elliott

As touched upon, Klopp has left his successor a squad brimming with promising youngsters. The wily German tactician was never shy about placing his trust in those at the beginning of their footballing journey, and in truth, they’ve seldom let him down. Slot is no stranger to entrusting youth as he’s done so not just at his previous club, Feyenoord, but at AZ before.

The emerging crop at Anfield should not fear the Dutchman’s arrival; if anything, their development at one of England’s richest institutions should continue unabated. Several names could be dubbed as the club’s rising stars, but none has quite caught the imagination like 18-year-old Ben Doak, who has already made ten senior appearances for Liverpool without troubling the scorers. A first senior cap for Scotland is forthcoming, and clubmate (as well as compatriot) Andy Robertson is preaching caution.

“Ben’s not lacking confidence, he’s a fantastic player,” he said earlier this year. “He’s got a bright future ahead of him, but it’s also important that we protect him and we put our arm round him and help him along the way, because he’s just starting his journey and we know what that’s like.”

In terms of someone who made a substantial impact for Liverpool, and turned 21 in April, that would be Harvey Elliott, while primarily a central midfielder, he often found himself deputising for Salah and doing an excellent job. Last season was a breakthrough, as he scored three goals and created six more for his teammates.”

Liverpool’s set-piece specialists:

  • Penalties: Mohamed Salah
  • Free-kicks: Mohamed Salah
  • Corners: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool tactical analysis & formation

Liverpool team stats from the 2023/24 Premier League season (avg per game):

  • Corners: 7.6
  • Shots on target: 7.3
  • Shots conceded: 10.9
  • Offsides: 2.6

As mentioned, Liverpool is entering new territory under Slot, but the Dutchman hasn’t moved away from the formula used under Klopp. Players like Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Robertson, and Salah are guaranteed starters. Díaz, Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Endo, and Konaté may not be completely secure in their positions, but they’re currently regular starters under Slot.

In today’s game, it’s not just about eleven players; it’s about the whole squad. Several players were hoping for a fresh start under the new management, including Slot’s compatriots Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo. Gakpo had a productive Euro 2020 campaign, while Gravenberch has leapfrogged into Liverpool’s starting eleven after being infrequently used last term.

Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones were also looking to secure regular starting positions under Slot, who has been using a 4-2-3-1 formation, so far preferring Jota to lead Liverpool’s attack with Núñez starting on the bench.
