Man City odds to win the Premier League 2024/25: Predicted finish, transfers, best players & full squad

Published: 14:30, 7 September 2024

Manchester City are hoping to keep their firm grip on the Premier League title in 2024/25.

For a record-breaking fourth consecutive season, Man City are the defending Premier League champions. Never before had a team won the English men’s top flight in four successive campaigns.

Naturally, they’ll be looking to turn four into five. But Man City will have to fight off the chasing pack including an Arsenal side that have pushed them very close in each of the past two seasons.

Still perfect at the September international break, Man City have been given a 47.6% chance of winning the Premier League per implied improbability.

Man City’s summer transfer window business

Man City transfers in

It was a quiet summer for incomings at Man City, with just two new faces added – one new and one old. Savinho joined from sister club Troyes, having featured in Girona’s Champions League qualification-securing campaign in La Liga last season. And there was a return to the Etihad for Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer, one year after he left for Barcelona.

Man City transfers out

The most significant departure for Man City in the summer was Julian Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid for a club-record fee. Also going out the doors of the Etihad were the likes of Joao Cancelo, Liam Delap and Sergio Gomez, among several loanees.

Who are Man City’s most important players?

Man City’s top Premier League Golden Boot contender: Erling Haaland

  • Key stat: Erling Haaland has scored seven goals in his first three Premier League games in 2024/25

Erling Haaland didn’t have as strong a season as many expected him to have in 2023/24, only scoring 27 goals in 31 Premier League games. It was a monumental fall from the 36 he scored in 35 matches in his debut Premier League campaign. With a record of 63 goals in 66 games, there was no need for Premier League defences to worry about Haaland anymore.

There was some criticism about Haaland and how he fits in Man City’s team, having 24.54 touches per 90 minutes in 2022/23 compared to 26.91 in 2023/24. But he did average more shots and shots on targets per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season than in his debut campaign.

And, of course, he’s continued being clinical this season. After three games, Haaland has already scored seven goals, including back-to-back hat-tricks. The Norwegian has now scored 70 goals in 69 games in the Premier League, with an average of a goal every 22.7 touches of the ball.

This season, Haaland has averaged a goal every 8.57 touches, the best average in the Premier League by some distance.

Man City’s primary playmaker: Kevin De Bruyne

  • Key stat: Kevin De Bruyne averaged 4.33 chances created per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season.

Injury restricted Kevin De Bruyne’s minutes last season, but when he returned to the pitch, the Belgian showed Man City what they were missing. He ended the campaign with ten assists in the Premier League, the third-most in the division and more than any other Man City player. He also created 21 big chances, the second-highest in the division, with an Expected Assists total of 7.13.

In the Man City team from the off, De Bruyne has continued his creativity. The Belgian has created 11 chances in the Premier League so far, with only two players managing more at the September international break. He’s also created three big chances, again among the best in the division.

De Bruyne does lead the Premier League for xA, currently at 1.61, which has translated to one assist. Most of that has come from open play, with 1.42 being the second-best in the Premier League.

Man City’s card magnets & top tacklers: Rodri

  • Key stat: Rodri made 70 tackles and committed 41 fouls in the Premier League last season.

Man City’s European champion, Rodri, has yet to play this season, suffering an injury in the Euro 2024 final and being given an extended break. He was an unused substitute in Man City’s win over West Ham and looks set to return shortly after the international break. And when he does, Rodri will be at the heart of Man City’s midfield.

Rodri is one of the best passers in the world, but he’s also extremely tough to beat, as we all know. In the Premier League last season, Rodri made 70 tackles, more than any other Man City player. That was only enough to be 27th in the league, but Man City aren’t a team that tackles too much, given how much possession they have.

On top of the 70 tackles, Rodri also committed 41 fouls, again more than any other Man City player. And Rodri isn’t exempt from punishment. The Spaniard is a master of the dark arts and knows just when he needs to take one for the team with a yellow card. He was booked eight times in total in the Premier League and received one red, with three of his four games missing due to suspension.

Man City’s rising star: James McAtee

Oscar Bobb was our initial pick for this, but the Norwegian fractured his leg just before the Premier League season. It came after Bobb starred in Man City’s win over Man Utd in the Community Shield. James McAtee starred in the Community Shield and has been on the bench in all three of Man City’s Premier League games. While that has only translated to one minute against Ipswich, McAtee is certain to get more playing time across the campaign, especially if Man City go far in all competitions.

Man City’s set-piece specialists:

  • Penalties: Erling Haaland
  • Free kicks: Kevin De Bruyne
  • Corners: Kevin De Bruyne

Man City’s tactical analysis & formation

Man City’s team stats from the 2023/24 Premier League season (avg per game):

  • Corners: 7.53
  • Shots on target: 7.32
  • Shots on target conceded: 2.92
  • Offsides: 1.11

Pep Guardiola likes to rotate, but it still feels like his favoured XI is pretty straightforward. Erling Haaland will start up front when fit, only really dropping out of the XI if Guardiola deems a game winnable without the Norwegian. Phil Foden will be one of the attackers alongside him, hoping to build on his Player of the Year-winning form. And when he does return to the XI, it’ll likely be in place of Bernardo Silva and alongside Kevin De Bruyne in the advanced midfield roles.

So far, we’ve seen Man City switch to a back three, with Rico Lewis pushing into midfield alongside Mateo Kovacic. Of course, Lewis can switch to right-back when Man City need a back four. He looks to have replaced Kyle Walker as Man City’s first-choice right-back. There is the question of what will happen with Rodri back in the team. Mateo Kovacic was been one of Man City’s best players in his absence, but one of him or Lewis will need to drop out.

In this system, Man City have flying wing-backs, if you can call them that. Jeremy Doku and Savinho have been the favourites so far, ahead of Jack Grealish. But, again, Foden’s return to the starting XI could shake things up. Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol look to be Guardiola’s first-choice centre-back trio in defence.
