Gameweek 5 served up an eight-goal thriller, a champion’s chastening afternoon and, as ever, a plethora of Premier League stats.
Manchester City remain the only side with a 100% record, five wins from five and three points clear, while reigning champions Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season in the most emphatic fashion on the south coast.
Brighton are flying, Liverpool are yet to be beaten under their new manager, Coventry ended a 25-year wait and, at the other end, Tottenham are enduring their worst-ever start to a top-flight season.
From record-breaking hat-tricks and goalkeeper assists to goal droughts and shocking starts, here are the best Premier League stats and records you might have missed from Gameweek 5.

Brighton 3-0 Arsenal
- Brighton inflicted Arsenal‘s heaviest defeat as reigning champions for 37 years.
Brighton’s 3-0 win was Arsenal’s biggest league defeat in a season as reigning top-flight champions since October 1989, when they were beaten 3-0 at Everton. It was also their heaviest Premier League loss since May 2023 – a 3-0 home defeat to, of all clubs, Brighton. The result ended a nine-match Premier League winning run and handed the Gunners their first defeat of the season.
Brighton‘s 16 goals are the most by any side in the Premier League this season, and the most by a team in their first five games since Manchester City in 2022/23 (19). Pascal Gross scored and assisted at the Amex and now has six goal involvements – three goals, three assists – more than any other player in the competition. The Seagulls are unbeaten after five matches of a top-flight campaign for the first time.
It was a story of pressing, not passing. Brighton won possession in the final third nine times, the most by any team against Arsenal in a Premier League game since Liverpool in December 2023 – and they did it with just 40% of the ball, mustering 17 shots and four big chances from a minority share of possession.
Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland
- Erling Haaland has now scored against all 25 Premier League clubs he has faced.
Manchester City edged an Etihad thriller 5-3, and it was Erling Haaland who settled it. His 81st-minute goal made Sunderland the final name on a remarkable list: the Norwegian has now scored against every one of the 25 Premier League clubs he has faced.
It was some game to get there. City led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 inside the first half alone – only the seventh Premier League match to see a team take the lead on three separate occasions in a single half, and the first since Brentford against Wolves in October 2024. The 5-3 final score was the first eight-goal Premier League game since Manchester United 4-4 Bournemouth in December 2025, and the first time City have conceded three at home since Spurs won 4-0 there in November 2024. Pep Guardiola’s side remain five from five and three points clear.
Spare a thought for Brian Brobbey. His hat-trick made him only the sixth player in Premier League history to score a treble and finish on the losing side, and the first since Roque Santa Cruz for Blackburn against Wigan in December 2007. He is also just the fourth player to hit a hat-trick against the side that started the day top of the table, after Robbie Fowler (1998), Dirk Kuyt (2011) and Romelu Lukaku (2013). Brobbey’s 1.69 xG was the highest individual figure of the weekend.
Tottenham 2-3 Aston Villa
- Two points and a goal difference of -6 is Tottenham‘s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
Tottenham’s miserable beginning to the campaign continued with a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa. Two points and a goal difference of -6 after five games is their worst-ever Premier League start, beating their 2008/09 opening (two points, -3).
There was at least a small mercy. Conor Gallagher’s 86th-minute strike ended a run of 492 Premier League minutes without a Spurs goal, and their first league goal of 2026/27 arrived with their 67th shot of the campaign. Spurs have now lost 22 home league games since the start of 2024/25 – one fewer than in the previous four seasons combined.
Fulham 1-1 Manchester United
- Manchester United had 29 shots at Craven Cottage – and still did not win.
Manchester United peppered the Fulham goal with 29 shots at Craven Cottage, a total they have bettered in an away Premier League game only once on record (30 at Burnley in January 2026). They still had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Profligacy is becoming a theme. United have hit the woodwork six times already this season, more than any side and their highest tally after five games on record. Their goal at the Cottage was an own goal – Lisandro Martinez’s third in the Premier League, level with Wes Brown, John O’Shea, Henning Berg and Jonny Evans as the most by a Manchester United player.
Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool
- Andoni Iraola is unbeaten in his first five league games in charge of Liverpool.
Alexander Isak’s winner at Bournemouth – his manager’s former club – kept Liverpool’s unbeaten start intact. Andoni Iraola is the first manager to go unbeaten in his first five league games in charge of Liverpool since Joe Fagan in September 1983 (two wins, three draws).
The Reds have kept three consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time since September 2024, and Isak’s goal was his fourth in five games – already more than the three he managed in 14 appearances last season.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Coventry City
- Coventry claimed their first top-flight win in 25 years – set up by their goalkeeper.
Coventry’s 1-0 win at the City Ground was their first top-flight victory since April 2001, and the 100th Premier League win in the club’s history. Jay Dasilva’s 55th-minute finish was set up by goalkeeper Carl Rushworth – only the second time a team’s first goal of a Premier League campaign has been assisted by a goalkeeper, after Peter Schmeichel for Manchester United in 1992/93. Coventry’s previous Premier League scorer was Mustapha Hadji, in the defeat that confirmed their relegation in 2001.
For Nottingham Forest, it was a new low: they have failed to score in their first three home league games of a season for the first time in their history. They had 26 shots, put just three on target and had a late equaliser ruled out by VAR. Morgan Gibbs-White created six chances – more than any other player in the gameweek – and still could not find a way through.
Brentford 3-0 Chelsea
- Brentford became the first side to stop Chelsea scoring this season.
Brentford’s 3-0 win made them the first side to keep Chelsea quiet this season, and their nine points are the club’s best-ever Premier League start, beating the eight they managed in 2021/22. Their unbeaten home run in the league now stands at eight matches, stretching back to February.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are winless in three and have now conceded in 21 consecutive Premier League games.
