Who are the favourites for the World Cup?
Brazil
Paddy Power | 888 Sport |
---|---|
9/2 | 5/1 |
- Group G opponents: Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Brazil are favourites to lift the World Cup at present and the world No.1 by Fifa rankings. There can be no disputing the talent at their disposal, with the likes of Neymar, Alisson and Casemiro being the star players in the squad.
They’ve led the way in Conmebol qualifying, topping the group and avoiding defeat in all of their games. In fact, they’ve lost just one of their last 15 competitive games, with their sole loss coming against Argentina in the Copa America final.
The country, of course, has pedigree at the World Cup, too. They’ve hosted the competition twice and lifted the trophy fives times, more than any other nation and would love to add another to their tally.

France

---|---|
11/2 | 6/1 |
- Group D opponents: UAE/Peru/Australia, Denmark, Tunisia
France are the current holders of the World Cup, winning the trophy for the second time by beating Croatia 4-2 in 2018. Their qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup saw them go unbeaten, as they topped Group D ahead of Ukraine.
Les Bleus could have the most talented squad coming into the competition with Mbappe, Pogba, Griezmann and Benzema all expected to star in Qatar. There have been prolonged rumours of discontent within Didier Deschamps squad and improving the squad harmony could be vital to France’s success in November.
England
Paddy Power | 888 Sport |
---|---|
11/2 | 7/1 |
- Group B opponents: Iran, USA, Scotland/Ukraine/Wales
England always seem to be mentioned among the favourites before major tournaments before flattering to deceive but in recent years, The Three Lions have got a lot closer to ending their trophy drought.
They reached the semi-final stage of the World Cup in 2018, before going one step further and losing in the final of Euro 2021 to Italy. There is something promising about Gareth Southgate’s side but it remains to be seen if they can turn that promise into success on the pitch.

Who are the World Cup dark horses?
Netherlands
Paddy Power | 888 Sport |
---|---|
10/1 | 14/1 |
- Group A opponents: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal
Netherlands topped Group G in Uefa qualifying, losing just one game before going nine games unbeaten. Perhaps most impressively, though, were the 33 goals they scored in 10 games to secure top spot. They join hosts Qatar in Group A, along with reigning Afcon champions Senegal and Ecuador.
The nation have often failed to live up to their promise but the current crop of players seem understated but with bags of ability. If Netherlands find their rhythm early and build momentum, they could be a outside shout to win their first-ever World Cup.
Denmark
Paddy Power | 888 Sport |
---|---|
22/1 | 28/1 |
- Group D opponents: France, UAE/Peru/Australia, Tunisia
Denmark looked impressive in their qualifying campaign, winning Group F with ease. They lost just one match, their final group game when qualification was already secured, and scored an average of three goals a game across their 10 matches.
They don’t have any true superstar players but, instead, a group that play for each other and could progress deep into the tournament, as shown by their run to the semi-finals of Euro 2021.
Uruguay
Paddy Power | 888 Sport |
---|---|
50/1 | 50/1 |
- Group H opponents: Portugal, Ghana, South Korea
Uruguay didn’t have the easiest qualifying campaign, struggling to keep pace with Brazil and Argentina at the top of the Conmebol group. They have been able to secure their path to Qatar, though, and have enough talent in their squad to really make an impact on the competition.
They might need a little bit of luck but with a squad boasting Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Darwin Nunez in their front line, they certainly have the star power in attack to compete.
