Mexico and South Africa opened the World Cup, a repeat of the opening matchup at the 2010 World Cup. The co-hosts eased to their 2-0 win in a game which saw three red cards. South Korea and Czech Republic met in the other opening match in Group A, with the Asian side coming from a goal down to win 2-1.
Mexico took on South Korea on matchday two and emerged with a 1-0 win. That was enough to secure their passage to the knockouts. The Czech Republic and South Africa played out a 1-1 draw that kept both nations in the hunt for qualification.
The final Group A games saw South Africa pull out a 1-0 win over South Korea in what was a relatively dull affair. Mexico meanwhile, made it three from three as they secured a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.
