Six-time EuroLeague champions Maccabi Tel Aviv have started the 2022/23 campaign with the bit between their teeth, harbouring early aspirations of ending their six-year title drought in this competition. Oded Kattash has masterminded three wins from Maccabi‘s opening four games, losing only to current table-toppers Fenerbahce Beko.

The Israeli side seemed to have started as they meant to go on the opening matchday, beating Zalgiris by a slender 84-83 win, but their momentum was halted in Round Two as Fenerbahce Beko flexed their early court muscles, with Marko Guduric racking up a 23-point haul. Since then, though, the direction has only been up for Kattash.

Successive wins over then unbeaten AS Monaco and most recently LDLC ASVEL has given them fresh impetus heading into this showdown against a potentially awkward sleeping giant. Panathinaikos are six-time EuroLeague champions like Maccabi, but are currently in the midst of a 11-year trophy drought.

And hopes of ending that protracted wait for continental silverware may continue if they can’t transform their fortunes this season. Dejan Radonjic’s side have won just one of their opening three matches and currently sit 14th in the still fledgling EuroLeague table.
