How Jack Rudoni is spearheading Coventry City's Premier League survival bid

Jack Rudoni played a key role in getting Coventry City to the Premier League, and if current trends continue, he may be the one who makes sure they stay there.

The attacking midfielder was integral to the Sky Blues in the 2025/26 Championship, registering seven goals and six assists in 30 appearances. He was also second among Coventry players to feature in at least 50% of league minutes for take-ons completed per 90 minutes (1.24) and created chances at a rate of 1.58 per 90, while only Haji Wright (0.59) and Victor Torp (0.39) had a better goalscoring ratio (0.3).

Rudoni netted Coventry’s third in a 3-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday — a vital result that lifts Frank Lampard‘s men above Manchester United and into 16th, while ending a two-game losing streak.

More than that, it continues an excellent run of form from Rudoni, who looks hell-bent on extending Coventry’s stay back in the top flight by more than just a single season.

Jack Rudoni goals inspire Coventry City turnaround

Rudoni’s 52nd-minute strike against the Black Cats had more than a hint of fortune, with a deflection off Omar Alderete completely wrong-footing goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

However, Rudoni made his own luck, attempting a match-high four shots throughout the 90 minutes, while also attempting three dribbles and six crosses, and covering a match-high 12.2km.

Rudoni is the only Coventry player with more than a single Premier League goal to his name this season, and all three of his strikes have come in his last four appearances. First, he opened the scoring from the penalty spot as Coventry beat Newcastle United 4-1, before equalising in an eventual 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, where the newly-promoted side more than held their own.

Goalscoring has always been in Rudoni’s locker; he netted 17 times across the last two Championship seasons combined following his move from Huddersfield Town. But supporters will be relieved to see him translating that form and promise to the top flight, especially with Haji Wright still working his way back from a muscle injury.

“When I came in, he’s sort of fighting for his way to stay in the team here. Now we look at him the other night, and he’s a Premier League player. So he has to now attain those expectations, which is a great thing,” Lampard said of Rudoni in October.

Attacking linchpin and relentless worker

Rudoni might be grabbing the headlines for his goals, but it’s his overall contribution that has proven most vital to Coventry.

Indeed, the Wimbledon academy product is first among his teammates in a host of key attacking metrics, including shots (14), chances created (14), and take-ons attempted (21).

Rudoni matches that final-third output with relentless work-rate and endeavour without the ball, sitting third among Coventry players for distance covered in the Premier League (85.8km), at a team-high rate of 11.9km per 90. He’s also first for possessions won in the middle third (21) and attacking third (5).

For a player to be giving so much in attack but still have the time, energy and willingness to do the dirty work is absolutely vital for a newly-promoted side, who simply must maximise every single advantage they have.

Rudoni’s form on both sides of the ball has helped the Sky Blues overcome a worrying start that had many writing them off as immediate returnees to the Championship. Instead, fuelled by his goals, they’ve taken nine points from their last five games — ahead of a favourable run that sees them take on the likes of Everton, Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Ipswich Town between now and the start of December.

If Rudoni can continue to inspire Coventry the way he is currently doing during that time, Lampard may not even have to worry about a relegation battle at all.
