Manchester City cling onto top spot in the Premier League despite their perfect start to the campaign coming to an end in defeat at Aston Villa.
They’re now ahead of Arsenal on goal difference alone after the Gunners eased to a 2-0 win over Everton. Liverpool and Brighton make up the remainder of the top four after the Reds’ home victory over the Seagulls.

Elsewhere there was another defeat for Manchester United at home to Bournemouth, an eye-catching away victory for Tottenham Hotspur over Chelsea and a second win of the campaign for Fulham away at Coventry.
Here are the best Premier League stats and records you might have missed from Gameweek 8.
Premier League stats you might have missed from Gameweek 8
Ipswich 1-1 Nottingham Forest
- Ipswich have now gone 27 Premier League games without keeping a clean sheet – 19 more games than any other team.
Ipswich Town have to go back to 2024 and a 2-0 win over Chelsea to find their last Premier League clean sheet. That run continued this weekend after Neco Williams put Nottingham Forest into a 1-0 lead early on at Portman Road. The Tractor Boys were able to hit back through Julio Enciso, eventually earning a 1-1 draw. The longest run in Premier League history is 34 games and Ipswich are now creeping closer to that number.
In all honesty, Gary O’Neil’s men were arguably lucky to take the point in the Friday night fixture. Forest created 2.31 xG and out-shot their hosts 17-7 but scored only once. The Tricky Trees have six league goals this season, joint-fewest in the division with Coventry and Sunderland.
Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester City
- Aston Villa are the first side to beat Man City in three successive Premier League games since Liverpool in December 2016 (a run of four).
Tottenham Hotspur are often labelled as Manchester City’s ‘bogey team’ but Aston Villa are now taking up that mantle. Having won both of the meetings between the two teams in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, Unai Emery‘s men again came out on top in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off thanks to a brace from Nicolas Jackson. The last time a Villa player scored two against the league leaders was way back in November 2012. Andreas Weimann bagged a brace in a 2-3 defeat to Manchester United.
The Villans have now won four of their last six meetings with City, having previously gone 15 without a win in a run stretching all the way back to 2013. This defeat signalled the end for the Cityzen’s perfect start to the campaign. However, it saw Villa’s unbeaten run reach seven games in all competitions. Three of City’s last five league defeats have come against this same opponent.
Arsenal 2-0 Everton
- Arsenal and Man City have both won seven of their first eight games. It is the first time two top-flight teams have won seven out of their first eight games since 1913/14.
Arsenal’s strong defensive start to the campaign continued with another clean sheet. After City’s defeat earlier in the day, both teams are left with seven wins from their first eight games – the first time in 113 years that two teams have managed that feat. They have opened up a five point gap on third place after Brighton’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
Gabriel scored his 21st Premier League goal for Arsenal on his 200th appearance in the competition. It was his first that did not come from a set-piece while Ezri Konsa’s opener was the Gunners’ first set-piece goal (excluding penalties) since May against Crystal Palace.
Coventry 0-1 Fulham
- Fulham brought the Premier League’s longest winless away run to an end with this win at Coventry City.
Having both failed to win this weekend, Everton and Brentford have now gone nine Premier League away matches without a win. But both teams would’ve remained behind Fulham had the Cottagers failed to earn all three points from their trip to Coventry City on Saturday. Oscar Bobb‘s 80th minute strike was enough to earn the travelling team the win at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
To earn the win, the Norwegian winger twisted into the box and curled an unstoppable shot into the far corner to score his first league goal since joining the club in January. He also created four chances, joint-most of any player this weekend. Coventry failed to score in the first half for the seventh time in eight league games, and their 0.5 xG was not enough in what they would’ve deemed a winnable fixture before kick-off.
Chelsea vs Tottenham
- Tottenham won at Stamford Bridge for only the second time in 35 Premier League visits (11 draws, 22 defeats), and for the first time since April 2018.
Few teams have more torrid records at a ground than Tottenham do at Chelsea. This was the first time the Lilywhites had won and kept a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge since 1986 and only the second time they had won their since 1990. The opener came via goalkeeper Mike Penders punching into his own goal from a Mateus Fernandes corner. The Blues have now conceded eight Premier League goals from set-pieces this season. That’s more than double any other team.
A key moment in the game was the red card for Cole Palmer, which came with the score at 1-0. The Chelsea player was booked for lashing out at Fernandes, then given his marching orders for a second yellow card after a stamp on Conor Gallagher. That sending off means Chelsea are now the third team in Premier League history to reach a tally of 100 red cards. Everton and Arsenal are the other two teams to reach that total.
Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle United
- William Osula has scored seven goals in his last 13 Premier League games. He scored only two in his first 50.
When Newcastle moved to bring in William Osula from Sheffield United in 2024, it’s clear they were paying for potential rather than the finished product. For quite some time, he didn’t look like delivering on that potential. However after poking home the opener in this weekend’s win at Selhurst Park he moved to seven goals in his last 13 appearances. This after scoring just twice in his first 50 Premier League games.
Osula started in place of Yoane Wissa and scored two minutes after half-time, before Harvey Barnes added the second. Matthias Jaissle’s much-changed defence kept Newcastle’s first league clean sheet in seven games, since their win at Tottenham in August. Palace meanwhile have conceded 12 goals in their last four league and European games and are now on 19 goals conceded in the Premier League this term. That’s four more than any other team.
Hull City 1-1 Brentford
- Brentford have still not won a top-flight game in Yorkshire since 1947
Brentford have lost five and drawn one of their six trips to Yorkshire since returning to the top division in 2021. As such, their wait for a win in the country now stretches back almost 80 years. Oli McBurnie had given Hull City the lead against the Bees on Sunday with a first-half penalty before Dango Outtara equalised after the break.
Igor Thiago’s 0.71 Expected Assists (xA) was the highest of any player’s stats in Gameweek 8. The Brazilian also set up that second-half equaliser for Outtara. Thiago also won eight aerial duels, joint-most of the weekend alongside Tottenham’s Jan Paul van Hecke but he’s yet to recapture his goalscoring form from last season. The result means the Tigers remain unbeaten at home. They are the third promoted team in the last 11 seasons to go unbeaten in their first four Premier League home games, after Wolves (2018/19) and Sunderland (2025/26). Both of those sides finished seventh.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton & Hove Albion
- Liverpool’s 35.6% possession was their lowest in an Anfield league win since November 2010 (35.3% against Chelsea).
It was a far from vintage performance for Liverpool despite them earning a 2-0 win over high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion. The Reds took the lead thanks to Pascal Gross deflecting Florian Wirtz‘s wayward effort into his own goal before Alexander Isak doubled the lead with his third goal in three successive matches. This is the first time the Swedish international he has managed that feat since January 2025. The last time he scored in three in a row, the run went to eight games. That bodes well for the Reds.
Brighton arrived having won four league games in a row 15-0 on aggregate. Their 17 shots were the most they have had in a Premier League game while hitting the target once or not at all. The Seagulls were the better of the two teams in most metrics. That’s perhaps best highlighted by the fact that the Reds had just 35.6% possession in the game.
Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth
- Bournemouth are only the third side to score two or more goals in four consecutive Premier League away games at Man Utd
Bournemouth have scored 18 goals in 10 Premier League games at Old Trafford. That is 1.8 per game, the best ratio of any side to visit United more than once in Football League history and much of that is down to the three consecutive 0-3 victories they’ve now enjoyed at the famous ground. Rayan volleyed the Cherries ahead before goals from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson sealed the win. Only Liverpool have more Premier League wins by three or more goals as an away side at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes was left on the bench for only the sixth time in the Premier League since he joined United. The Red Devils have won only one of their last 11 games without him in the starting XI. Bryan Mbeumo was the only United starter who had scored a Premier League goal for the club in 2026.
Sunderland 0-0 Leeds
- Leeds have conceded six goals in eight games, the second-fewest in the Premier League. At the same stage last season they had let in 13.
Only champions Arsenal (five) have conceded fewer goals than Leeds this season. James Trafford, signed from Man City in August, made 12 loose-ball recoveries, joint-second most of any player this weekend as well as an impressive four saves. Leeds have lost only one league game this season, and only six of their last 33 in the competition, but scoring is still a problem. The Whites’ nine goals are the joint-lowest of any team in the top half.
This draw keeps Sunderland rooted to the bottom of the table. They have now gone three league games without scoring and six without a win.
