Yet another new era is about to dawn at Chelsea this weekend as Mauricio Pochettino takes charge of his first game in charge at Stamford Bridge. The former Tottenham Hotspur manager has much work to do to improve on last season’s underperformance. But with the financial backing and quality in his squad, a Champions League place will be the aim come the end of the season.

The Argentinian boss couldn’t have asked for a much more difficult start though as the visitors to West London on the first Super Sunday of the season are Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Fresh from a relatively disappointing season themselves, the Reds will hope new signings Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister can add some dynamism to their midfield this season, starting this Sunday in the capital.

The Reds are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games (W7 D4), the longest current run without a defeat for any side in the competition. This run started with a 0-0 draw at Chelsea, which is the only time they’ve failed to score in these 11 matches.

Chelsea vs Liverpool match tip

Under 2.5 goals @ 27/20 with Copybet

Meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool have been notoriously light on goals in recent years. In their last four matches in all competitions, not a single goal has been scored, with Jurgen Klopp’s side seemingly very capable of keeping the Blues quiet but failing to create much going forward themselves. Chelsea are still getting to grips with Mauricio Pochettino’s style of play so may not hit full flow for a while either, which could lead to another low-scoring affair.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Bet-Builder tip

Under 2.5 goals > Mohamed Salah to score anytime > Draw

Alongside the low-scoring bets, Salah has never failed to score in an opening Premier League game for Liverpool.

As for Chelsea, odds on new forward Nicolas Jackson to score first are more appealing, at 6/1 with Copybet. The former Villarreal forward potentially looks a nightmare proposition for Liverpool’s high line.

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell spoke to TalkSport about his new teammate, saying: “It’s a nice surprise in a way to see a no.9 that loves running in behind, it kind of takes me back to when I was at Leicester with [Jamie Vardy].”

Reason for tip

The last four meetings between Liverpool and Chelsea in all competitions have finished 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Reason for tip

Mohamed Salah in all six of his Premier League opening game appearances since joining Liverpool.

Reason for tip

Four of the last six Chelsea vs Liverpool matches in all competitions have finished level. The other two were won by Liverpool after penalty shootouts.

Chelsea vs Liverpool team news

A host of new signings will be available for Chelsea, including the lethal Nicolas Jackson who joined from Villarreal. The most eye-catching arrival of the summer, attacker Christopher Nkunku misses the season opener after suffering a knee injury in pre-season.

Liverpool will have a new-look midfield for the first time in this Premier League match, following the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Christopher Nkunku’s former RB Leipzig teammate Dominik Szoboszlai. They will look to replace Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who’ve both left Liverpool this summer to join Saudi Arabian clubs.
