Texans vs Titans injury report and team news

Will Anderson Jr. has four sacks for Houston, joint third in the NFL, and the Texans have 14 as a team.

Carnell Tate has 268 receiving yards as a rookie, more than any other Tennessee receiver.

David Montgomery has joined the Houston backfield and shares carries with Woody Marks.

The first win is here for one of them

Houston’s problem is not the offense. They have thrown for 1,059 yards at a 95.3 rating and converted 57.1% of red-zone trips. They have also conceded 1,040 passing yards at 102.9, which is how a team scoring 21 a game ends up 0-4.

Tennessee’s problem is the opposite and worse. Fifty-five points in four games, six touchdowns, an 81.4 passer rating. Tony Pollard’s 221 rushing yards are the most reliable thing the Titans have, and 3.96 a carry is respectable rather than dangerous.

Both run defenses are genuinely solid, and that is what shapes the game. Houston allow 3.35 a carry and Tennessee 3.66, so neither side will grind it out. It comes down to whether Tennessee’s secondary, which has conceded a 100.4 rating, can hold Houston’s passing game for four quarters.

Players to watch

  • Nico Collins (HOU, WR): The main target in a passing game that has produced 1,059 yards.
  • Woody Marks (HOU, RB): Shares a backfield against a defense allowing 3.66 a carry.
  • Tony Pollard (TEN, RB): 221 rushing yards, Tennessee’s most dependable source of gains.
  • Carnell Tate (TEN, WR): 268 receiving yards as a rookie on a side that has scored 55 points.

Texans vs Titans prediction and score projection

Houston win 19-16. The Texans have the better passing game and the better run defense, and in a game between winless teams that is usually enough. It is also the closest call on this week’s card.

The live spread and the model’s number for this one are worth checking again on Friday.
