Liga MX season format

Mexican soccer’s top flight operates on an Apertura/Clausura split: two distinct half-seasons per year, each crowning its own champion. The Clausura typically runs from January through late May. After 17 jornadas of regular-phase play, the top six teams normally advance directly to the Liguilla quarterfinals while teams finishing seventh through tenth contest a Reclasificación (play-in) round for the remaining two spots. Clausura 2026 is the exception: because of the 2026 World Cup compressing the calendar, the Reclassification round has been dropped this cycle and the top eight qualify directly. Apertura 2026 is expected to revert to the standard format.

The Liguilla itself is a two-legged knockout bracket from the quarterfinals through to the final. For the current table and playoff picture, visit the Liga MX standings.
