How both teams go into Southampton vs Wolves
It looks as though Southampton’s return to the Premier League is lasting just one season. Saints have been terrible in the Premier League, still sitting on single digits for points. They’ve won just two of their 28 games so far, with three draws and 23 defeats. Seven more defeats from their final 10 games, which is feasible, would see Southampton take the unwanted record for most losses in a Premier League season. They need three points from their final 10 games to avoid taking Derby County’s record for lowest-ever points tally. Southampton did win recently against a fellow relegation battler in Ipswich Town, but they’ve not been able to build on that with four straight losses since.
Wolves will have been feeling confident about their chances of battling relegation, particularly as they started getting some wins under Vitor Pereira. But the wins are joined by defeats. Wolves have won two of their past five games, losing two and drawing one. In their last away game Wolves lost to Fulham, who they had comfortable beaten earlier in the season. With the three teams below them having tough matches, that could have been Wolves’ chance. And now they’ll have to make do without Matheus Cunha for three games, throwing a spanner in the works.
Southampton team news
Southampton will be hoping for positive news surrounding their injuries by the time this game comes around. They could have a clean bill of health, though Ryan Fraser looks set to miss out.
Wolves team news
This will be the second of Cunha’s three-match ban after his red card in the FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth. Sasa Kaladzjic also won’t return from injury until after the international break. Leon Chiwone, Yerson Mosquera and Enso Gonzalez are out for the season.
Southampton vs Wolves head-to-head
Wolves have won their past six games against Wolves since a 0-2 defeat in the FA Cup in February 2021. They haven’t lost to Saints in the league in their past nine meetings, a run going back to 2019.
