Published: 13:30, 25 October 2024

Fulham hopes to return to the top half of the Premier League when the 2024/25 season comes around.

The Cottagers are in their third campaign since returning to the top flight and are looking for their longest stay in the Premier League since 2001-2014. Fulham finished 10th in their first campaign back in the top flight, but dropped down to 13th last season.

Marco Silva’s men have been given a 40% chance of finishing in the top half of the 2024/25 Premier League per implied probability. For a more positive outlook, Fulham have been given a 95.2% chance of avoiding relegation.

Fulham are predicted to be safe from relegation, with just an 4.8% chance of finishing in the bottom three. Although, obviously, the Cottagers would no doubt want that to be smaller. Elsewhere, They have a 40% chance of finishing in the top half per implied probability and a 2.9% chance of breaking into the top six.

Fulham’s summer transfer window business so far

It was a busy summer for Fulham in the transfer window. The Cottagers welcomed six new players, with Emile Smith Rowe, Joachim Andersen, Sander Berge and Jorge Cuenca costing a fee, while Reiss Nelson is on loan from Arsenal and Ryan Sessegnon returning ‘home’ on an initial two-year deal after injuries limited his game time at Spurs. However, they have seen nine players go out the door, including Joao Palhinha, who finally secured his move to Bayern Munich one year after his deadline day move fell through.

Who are Fulham’s most important players?

Fulham’s top Premier League Golden Boot contender: Raúl Jiménez

Rodrigo Muniz emerged as a surprising goal scorer for Fulham in the Premier League last season, stepping up when the Cottagers struggled to find a reliable striker. After primarily serving as a substitute early in the season, Muniz scored his first goal at the beginning of February. He went on to net nine goals in his final 16 Premier League appearances, ending the season as Fulham’s top scorer—a testament to his talent.

Despite his late start, Muniz had more shots and shots on target than any other Fulham player in the league last season. He averaged 1.52 shots on target per 90 minutes, ranked ninth-best in the Premier League among players who had played at least 684 minutes and 19 matches. He also ranked in the top five for total shots per 90 minutes, averaging 4.11. His nine goals came from an expected goals (xG) total of 8.72, all of which were scored from open play.

Muniz has not found his rhythm in the 2024/25 season, having scored only one goal in seven appearances. Meanwhile, Fulham’s leading goal scorer has been a returning player. Jiménez, who has overcome injury setbacks, is reminding everyone of his capabilities. He began his Premier League career with two consecutive seasons of double-digit goal totals, including 17 goals in the 2019/20 campaign. Since then, he has managed just 17 goals in four seasons, going scoreless in the 2022/23 season. Last season, he found some form again, scoring seven goals in 24 appearances, and he has already netted four times in eight matches this term.

Fulham’s primary playmaker: Andreas Pereira

Andreas Pereira was linked with a move away from Fulham this summer, with Chelsea reportedly interested in signing him. However, the Cottagers managed to retain him, as he has emerged as a key playmaker for the team.

Last season, the former Manchester United player created 84 chances in the Premier League, nearly double that of the next-best player, Alex Iwobi, who had 49. Of those 84 chances, Pereira generated nine big chances and recorded seven assists. Notably, half of the chances he created came from set plays.

With 43 set-play chances, only James Ward-Prowse created more than Pereira’s 42 in the Premier League last season. Additionally, he provided four assists from set plays, placing him in the top 10 for the division.

So far this season, Pereira has created 24 chances—nine more than any of his teammates—including two classified as ‘big chances,’ though he has yet to register an assist.

Fulham’s card magnets & top tacklers: Antonee Robinson

With Joao Palhinha gone, Fulham will need to find a new tackler in midfield. However, on the pitch, Antonee Robinson is expected to continue delivering impressive tackle numbers. In modern football, full-backs often contribute significantly to tackle counts, whether they are playing deep or pushing higher up.

Robinson was Fulham’s second-highest tackler in the Premier League last season, recording a total of 93 tackles. While he was 59 tackles behind Palhinha, he finished 44 tackles ahead of third-placed Calvin Bassey and Timothy Castagne. The American played more minutes than any other Fulham outfield player and ranked second in fouls (32), behind Palhinha. He was also one of four players tied with six yellow cards in the Premier League, again with only Palhinha receiving more.

In the current 2024/25 season, Robinson has already made the most tackles for Fulham, totalling 30. However, Sasa Lukic leads the team in fouls (17) and yellow cards (4).

Fulham’s rising star: Luke Harris

Fulham don’t really have any rising stars that look set to break through this season. Luke Harris had an opportunity, but he’s spending the campaign away from the club on loan. The teenager spent the second half of last season on loan at Exeter City and played 21 times for the Grecians in League One. He does have Premier League experience too, however. One came last season as he replaced Tom Cairney after just 16 minutes of Fulham’s 5-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad, playing the remainder of the match. The season before, he made three Premier League appearances for a grand total of 10 minutes, making his debut aged 17.

Fulham tactical analysis & formation

Fulham’s team stats from the 2023/24 Premier League season (avg per game):

  • Shots on target: 4.74
  • Shots on target conceded: 5.16
  • Offsides: 1.34

Fulham 2024/25 player ratings*

  • GK: Bernd Leno – 56% – Leno’s solid debut campaign raised the bar slightly. However, he has yet to recapture his form from 2023/24. That said, the German shot-stopper remains a crucial member of Fulham’s backline.
  • RB: Kenny Tete – 64% – The former Ajax and Lyon player has adjusted his natural attacking style to become a more defensively-minded full-back, which is slowly paying off.
  • CB: Joachim Andersen – 56% – A fascinating acquisition from another part of London, Andersen has built a reputation as the league’s underrated ball-playing centre-back. He has displayed moments of finesse that have earned him supporters, including Jamie Carragher, as well as aggression that has occasionally worked against him, resulting in one sending-off.
  • CB: Calvin Bassey – 59% – After facing a challenging period in Amsterdam, where he was expected to replace Lisandro Martinez, Calvin Bassey moved to Fulham. He is still working to regain the form that impressed scouts during his time at Rangers. While he can be inconsistent at times, the Nigerian international continues to be a formidable presence on the field.
  • LB: Antonee Robinson – 69% – Fulham’s versatile full-back continues to be a significant threat going forward, putting opposing wingers on the back foot while remaining resolute in defence. He is rapidly becoming the club’s most important player, which is an astounding turnaround given that some supporters once questioned his value.
  • CM: Andreas Pereira – 57% – Andreas Pereira is undeniably Fulham’s key playmaker, but the Brazilian midfielder has yet to record an assist this season. However, it shouldn’t be long before that assist column starts to fill up.
  • CM: Sasa Lukic – 62% – He has an open-play passing accuracy of 91%, the highest among all Fulham players this season. However, his overall score is negatively affected by his below-average tackles won per 90 minutes (0.98), a take-on success rate of only 33%, and the fact that he loses an average of 1.96 challenges per game. This indicates that skilful opponents can easily bypass him.
  • AM: Emile Smith Rowe – 65% – Perhaps the club’s marquee signing this summer, the former Arsenal midfielder, has begun life at Fulham with aplomb, scoring two goals and providing one assist in eight appearances.
  • RW: Adama Traore – 64% – In the past, Traoré was praised for his incredible acceleration, but he often struggled to control that speed, as it seemed his feet were quicker than his brain. Gradually, he has found a balance and has become a significant threat with his pace while also improving his end product.
  • LW: Alex Iwobi – 65% – The once-promising Arsenal forward has found a new role at Fulham, where not much is expected of him, but he can be relied upon to put in a shift and contribute with a goal or assist.
  • CF: Raul Jimenez – 79% – This season has marked a significant comeback for Raul Jimenez, who recently faced injuries that could have jeopardised his career. After his first eight appearances, he’s Fulham’s leading scorer, netting four goals and providing an additional assist.

Marco Silva is firmly committed to a 4-2-3-1 formation, having not deviated from it once during the previous Premier League season. This setup allows him to deploy two midfielders to protect the defence while allowing attackers to play on the counter.

The defensive midfield pairing is one major change, as Palhinha joined Bayern Munich. Andreas Pereira joined Sasa Lukic in the double pivot, with Emile Smith Rowe positioned ahead of them.

Joachim Andersen and Calvin Bassey form the centre-back partnership at the back, with Antonee Robinson on the left and Kenny Tete on the right. Bernd Leno retains his position as the goalkeeper.

Up front, Raul Jimenez has reasserted his role as the starting striker. Flanking him are Adama Traore and Alex Iwobi on the wings.
