Ipswich odds to be relegated from Premier League 2024/25: Predicted finish, transfers, best players & full squad

Published: 9:29, 11 August 2024

Ipswich are back in the Premier League and they’ll be hoping their stay lasts more than a season.

The Tractor Boys have spent just five seasons in the Premier League, including the first three of the competition. They were last in the top flight in 2001/02 when they finished 18th, four points from safety. That came a year after their fifth-placed finish had secured UEFA Cup football, an incredible fall in such a quick period.

Last season, all three promoted clubs went straight back down, just the second time that has happened in the Premier League. Ipswich are odds-on to be relegated, second favourites behind Leicester. Per implied probability, Ipswich are 52.4% likely to be relegated.

Ipswich’s summer transfer window business so far

Ipswich are working to build a squad capable of staying in the Premier League. They have made Omari Hutchinson’s loan move from Chelsea permanent, while also adding young star Liam Delap from Manchester City. The Tractor Boys have addressed their goalkeeper dilemma with Arijanet Muric moving from relegated Burnley.

Who are Ipswich’s most important players?

Ipswich’s top Premier League Golden Boot contender: Conor Chaplin

  • Key stat: Conor Chaplin averaged 1.07 shots on target per 90 minutes for Ipswich in the Championship last season.

Ipswich finished the 2023/24 Championship with two players level on 13 goals. Nathan Broadhead had the better return, netting his in the least minutes, but Conor Chaplin will be the danger man. Chaplin played 44 of Ipswich’s 46 league games last season and was among the top players for minutes for the Tractor Boys. He was the man they went to most, and it’s easy to see why.

The 27-year-old, who can be played anywhere across the front line, had 138 shots in the Championship, almost double the next-best player for Ipswich. He also hit the target 40 times, another Ipswich high. Although there may be questions about his accuracy, the sheer volume of chances (at 1.07 shots on target per 90 minutes) will serve Chaplin well.

Ipswich’s primary playmaker: Leif Davis

  • Key stat: Leif Davis (125) created more chances than any other player in the 2023/24 Championship.

Providing the chances for Chaplin, and the rest of the Ipswich team, will be Leif Davis. The left-back had a fantastic season in the Championship, so much so that some were calling for him to be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024. Davis was at the heart of everything for Ipswich, creating 125 chances — more than any other player in the Championship last season. He also sat top of the charts for assists with 18.

Davis did have more minutes than any other Ipswich outfield player but he was still creating  2.97 chances per 90 minutes. He’s a danger from set pieces too, with an xA from set play of 5.48 in the Championship last season and a whopping 218 corners taken.

Ipswich’s card magnets & top tacklers: Sam Morsy

  • Key stat: Sam Morsy committed 73 fouls in the Championship last season, more than any other Ipswich player.

Sam Morsy is Ipswich’s captain and he leads by example. The midfielder is at the heart of the battle for the ball, not giving an inch to opponents. Last season in the Championship, Morsy was the only Ipswich player to break 100 tackles, reaching 119 in total. Twenty-eight more than any other player, that averaged out to 2.58 tackles per 90 minutes.

But Morsy wasn’t always clean. He committed 73 fouls in the Championship, more than any other Ipswich player and was booked 14 times. Per 90 minutes, that worked out to an average of 1.75 fouls. While by no means the worst, he was susceptible to felling the opposition.

Ipswich’s rising star: Omari Hutchinson

Believe it or not, Omari Hutchinson is only 20 — turning 21 in October. He plays like a man 10 years his senior, while also mixing in the self confidence that can only come with youth. The Jamaican international had a good season on loan at Ipswich to help them earn promotion to the Premier League.

He was directly involved in 15 goals, scoring 10 and providing five assists. And that move has been made permanent this summer, which feels like the best decision for all parties. Hutchinson looks set to shine in the Premier League.

Ipswich’s set-piece specialists:

  • Penalties: George Hirst
  • Free kicks: Leif Davis
  • Corners: Leif Davis

Ipswich tactical analysis & formation

Ipswich team stats from the 2023/24 Premier League season (avg per game):

  • Corners: 5.35
  • Shots on target: 5.65
  • Shots on target conceded: 3.74
  • Offsides: 1.76

Perhaps the best news for Ipswich in the transfer window was that Kieran McKenna would be staying put. The Northern Irishman was linked with the vacant posts at both Chelsea and Brighton, and there looked a time when he would go to either one. But he ended up signing a new deal and started preparing for the Premier League.

McKenna started with a back three at Ipswich but has utilised the 4-2-3-1 for the past 18 months and will no doubt carry that on in the Premier League. But he’ll be thankful to know there is room for a plan B. Despite the arrivals, we may not see an Ipswich side too dissimilar from their Championship XI. One of the changes will be in goal with Arijanet Muric replacing Vaclav Hladky, who has left the club.

In defence, Leif Davis is a must start while Luke Woolfenden and Cameron Burgess formed a good centre-back partnership. On the right, though, Ben Johnson could come in to battle Harry Clarke and Axel Tuanzebe. The midfield partnership of Sam Morsy and Massimo Luongo should also continue.

Up front, Ipswich are very fluid in attack which works in their favour. They have a number of players who can fill positions and fill them well. Conor Chaplin is their goal threat but he’ll likely play behind the striker, which was George Hirst last season when fit. Omari Hutchinson and Wes Burns will be the wingers providing the threat from out wide.
