What is a save?

Opta defines a save as when a goalkeeper prevents the ball from entering the goal from an intentional attempt from an opponent. A save can be made with any part of the goalkeeper’s body – broken down to hands, feet, body or fist. There are also a lot of extra qualifiers for saves such as caught, collected, parried safe, parried danger, fumble and fingertip.

Saves are also counted for unintentional efforts on target from a teammate, but only if it’s not “perceived to be a routine collection of the ball”.

But if the ball goes behind the goal due to a “goalkeeper intervention”, a corner must be awarded for it to be counted as a save. So any wrongly-awarded goal kicks won’t count towards a goalkeeper’s save numbers.

What do save numbers tell us about a goalkeeper?

Saves are an interesting metric for goalkeepers. High save numbers don’t always relate to a good goalkeeper. It may just mean that a goalkeeper has a bad defence, so are forced to make more saves. This is generally the case in the Premier League. For example, Aaron Ramsdale made the second-most saves in the Premier League last season with 125. But he only kept three clean sheets and had a save percentage of 64.89%. He also suffered relegation with Southampton.

That’s not always the case, though. Jordan Pickford made 122 saves and kept 12 clean sheets. And Mark Flekken made 153 saves, with a save percentage of 73.17%.

Who are the best save-makers in Premier League history?

Save stats only go back to the 2006-07 season in the Premier League, when Opta’s records began. Ben Foster leads the way for saves in Premier League history with 1,248, but there’s a chance he could be beaten in 2025-26. Lukasz Fabianski sits second on 1,215 saves and is back in the Premier League with West Ham United. David de Gea, Jordan Pickford and Petr Cech are the only other goalkeepers to break 1,000 saves since records began.
