Match Result: Draw3/1 @ Betfair
(25.0%)
⭐⭐⭐⭐Both teams have scored in each of Newcastle’s last nine home matches, leaving supporters eager to bring a difficult season to an end. West Ham will see this an opportunity to end their recent lack of cutting edge in front of goal. However, the Hammers have failed to win 14 of their 18 away matches this season and backing the draw looks the wise option here.
Konstantinos Mavropanos Over 0.5 shots on target18/5 @ QuinnBet
(21.7%)
⭐⭐⭐Konstantinos Mavropanos looks potentially overpriced in the shots on target market on Sunday. The West Ham defender has scored three goals across his last seven appearances. In that period he has recorded seven shots, with five of those hitting the target. With this in mind, 18/5 for him to have one or more looks a price we can attack from Quinn Bet.

How both teams go into Newcastle vs West Ham

Newcastle United were briefly at risk of being pulled into the relegation conversation heading into gameweek 36, but a point away at Nottingham Forest ensured there would be no late-season collapse. Eddie Howe’s side drew 1-1 at the City Ground after Harvey Barnes opened the scoring, only for Elliot Anderson to level against his former club, continuing a frustrating theme of missed opportunities.

The Magpies have now dropped 27 points from winning positions this season, more than any other Premier League side, a factor that has left them down in 13th place. They have also collected just three points from losing positions and conceded 20 goals in the final 15 minutes of matches, although their home form remains a positive with at least two goals scored in 13 of their 18 Premier League games at St James’ Park this season.

West Ham United head to St James’ Park in need of a response after back to back goalless performances, the latest a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal where Leandro Trossard’s deflected strike proved decisive. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side thought they had equalised late on through Callum Wilson, but VAR ruled the goal out after a foul on David Raya in a decision that has left plenty of debate over consistency.

The result leaves the Hammers 18th in the table, two points from safety, meaning anything less than a win on Sunday could leave their survival hopes hanging by a thread heading into the final day. They have also failed to score in their last three away matches, although they did win this fixture at St James’ Park last season and also beat Newcastle United at home earlier in the campaign.

Newcastle team news

Anthony Gordon is expected to remain on the bench again as Eddie Howe continues to look towards the future, while Harvey Barnes is pushing for a start after scoring as a substitute against Nottingham Forest to take his tally to 16 goals this season. Newcastle United are also dealing with several injuries, with Lewis Miley, Emil Krafth, Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar all still sidelined, while Joelinton is a new concern after picking up a minor thigh issue in training.

West Ham team news

West Ham United are expected to have a similar squad available for the penultimate round of fixtures, although Adama Traore will miss out again after sitting out the defeat to Arsenal with a quadriceps injury. Nuno Espirito Santo’s recent switch to a 3-4-2-1 system came close to paying off against the league leaders and could be retained, with the main decision coming in attack.

Callum Wilson saw a late goal ruled out last weekend but remains in contention to lead the line again, having already scored against former club Bournemouth earlier this season.

Can Newcastle Exploit West Ham’s Defensive Woes? Final Thoughts

It’s hard to trust either defence, and backing the draw at 3/1 looks a sensible option for punters. However, the better bet could be for Mavropanos to record a shot on target at 18/5 with Quinn Bet. The Greek defender has scored three goals and recorded five shots on target across his last seven matches.
