Scotland vs Slovenia predictions and betting tips: Scots to shut out Slovenia at Hampden

Scotland vs Slovenia Nations League preview banner

Scotland and Slovenia meet at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Tuesday at 7.45pm, level on four points in Nations League Group B1 and chasing the second place that brings a promotion play-off. Switzerland lead the way with nine points from three games, so the winner here takes a big step towards the runners-up spot.

Anthony Eadson’s Scotland vs Slovenia predictions, best bets and score prediction are below.

Premium TipOddsWhy we’re backing it
Both teams to score: No3/4 (William Hill)Scotland have seen at least one side fail to score in each of their last seven matches, a run that started straight after the 4-1 win over Curaçao on 30 May, and both teams scored in only one of their last 10 internationals. The Scots kept clean sheets in four of those seven games, including the 0-0 in Ljubljana. Slovenia have failed to score in four of their last 10 matches, and they travel without Benjamin Šeško, Andraž Šporar and Benjamin Verbič, all withdrawn injured. In addition, Slovenia have not scored in two previous visits to Hampden, a 0-0 draw in 2004 and a 1-0 defeat in 2017. Back BTTS No at 3/4 with William Hill.
John McGinn to score anytime3/1 (bet365)John McGinn leads this Scotland squad with 22 goals in 92 caps, more than double the next best, Ryan Christie on 10. The Aston Villa midfielder has scored in two of Scotland’s last six matches, grabbing the only goal against Haiti at the World Cup and converting a penalty in Saturday’s 2-0 win in Skopje. As a result, he has scored two of Scotland’s last three goals. Scott McTominay is out after a minor heart procedure, while Lawrence Shankland and Ché Adams are not in the squad, so Scotland are without 35 international goals from that trio. That leaves McGinn as the clear focal point. Back McGinn to score anytime at 3/1 with bet365.

How Scotland go into the game

Scotland sit third in Group B1, level on points with Slovenia but behind on goal difference, after a 2-0 win over North Macedonia in Skopje on Saturday. Kieron Bowie struck after seven minutes and John McGinn converted a second-half penalty, which followed a 3-0 home defeat to Switzerland and a goalless draw in Ljubljana. That leaves Sébastien Pocognoli with one win, one draw and one defeat from his first three games in charge, and his side have kept clean sheets in four of their last seven matches.

However, Pocognoli must reshuffle his defence because Scott McKenna serves a suspension after his red card against North Macedonia. Jack Hendry is available again after serving a ban of his own, so he should step into the back three. Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean withdrew from the squad through injury, Scott McTominay is out after a minor heart procedure, and Lawrence Shankland and Ché Adams are not in the squad. As a result, McGinn (22 goals in 92 caps) and Ryan Christie (10 goals) carry most of the goal threat.

How Slovenia go into the game

Slovenia sit second on goal difference after a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in Lucerne on Saturday. Žan Vipotnik scored after two minutes, but an Erik Janža own goal and a Dan Ndoye strike turned the game before half-time. Boštjan Cesar’s side had earlier beaten North Macedonia 2-0 at home, with goals from Sandi Lovrić and Aljoša Matko, after the opening 0-0 draw with Scotland.

Meanwhile, the away form makes grim reading: Slovenia have won only one of their last seven away games, a 3-2 win in Montenegro in March, and lost three of their last four on the road. They also travel without Benjamin Šeško, Andraž Šporar and Benjamin Verbič, who all withdrew injured, so Vipotnik (six goals in 29 caps) leads the line. In addition, under 2.5 goals landed in seven of Slovenia’s last 10 matches.

Six meetings have produced two Scotland wins and four draws, so Slovenia have never beaten the Scots. The last five meetings brought one Scotland home win, a 3-0 away win and three draws, and Slovenia have not scored in two visits to Hampden. Last month’s 0-0 in Ljubljana saw Scotland register five shots on target to Slovenia’s one.
